  • High-growth firms and the use of formalised planning and control systems
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Management and Decision Making. - 1462-4621 .- 1741-5187. ; 13:3, s. 266-285
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research has argued that with growing size firms increasingly rely on more formalised planning and control systems. This paper addresses what kind of systems high-growth companies use and perceive as most beneficial for their growth. A pilot study served to identify which planning and control systems medium-sized firms most commonly employ as well as how these are perceived in relation to business growth. Findings from the pilot study were translated into an e-mail survey administered to the entire population of medium-sized high-growth firms ('gazelles') in Sweden, generating a response rate of 35.2%. In the pilot study, three formalised planning and control systems were identified as most commonly used. A clear majority of the surveyed gazelles use one or several of these systems and perceive them as important for achieving continuous growth. However, the integration of these systems (strategic planning, management systems, and enterprise resource planning) was rather low. Overall, strategic planning was the system relied on the most, while management systems were used the least. The originality of this paper lies in the exploration of the use of different formalised planning and control systems and their perceived relation to high-growth.

  • Projects and politics : exploring the duality between action and politics in complex projects
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Management and Decision Making. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1462-4621 .- 1741-5187. ; 11:2, s. 121-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditional research and literature on project management and organisation theory tend to view project organisations as non-political bodies and purely action-oriented endeavours. In contrast, this paper presents an alternative analysis drawing on the idea of projects as political and emergent processes. Based on in-depth, case-study findings of a complex development and implementation project, we suggest an analytical framework that focuses on the interrelatedness of action and political processes and which explains how project management deals with the two processes simultaneously. We identify and analyse three separate but nested organisational logics applied by the project management team to cope with the dual challenges of politics and action. The general idea is to illustrate the notion of projects as emergent processes involving both politics and action. The three logics are: 1) balancing openness and closure; 2) reformulating tasks to seek solutions; 3) relating to improve action capacity. Our findings add to the literature on the role and practice of project management in complex projects that entail both stakeholder and technological challenges.

  • Market Knowledge Learning in Emerging Markets : An Empirical Study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Management and Decision Making. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1462-4621 .- 1741-5187. ; 20:4, s. 376-391
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The turbulent environment that occurs within emerging markets creates a very specific environment for market knowledge learning. Current literature has focused mainly on market knowledge learning's impact on firm performance in developed markets. This paper focuses on market knowledge learning in emerging markets. The study examined multinational telecommunication organisations that provide mobile services in Pakistan. The relationships between various components of market knowledge learning and firm performance are investigated. The findings suggest that new knowledge acquisition, sense-making of acquired knowledge, and the subsequent implementation contributes to organisational knowledge and positively impacts firm performance. This study contributes to the debate on the differences in market knowledge learning in developed and emerging markets.

  • Influence of insight and manoeuvre inertia on information technology investments and strategic change
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Management and Decision Making. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1462-4621 .- 1741-5187. ; 13:3, s. 250-265
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IT is transforming the global economy. The technology may inspireas well as hinder the development of business strategies. The concept oforganisational inertia highlights factors that prevent organisations from makingchanges necessary to realise such strategies. In this article, writings on theinertia concept are summarised and used as a framework to analyse howorganisational inertia influences decisions on IT investments and strategicchange. The empirical data consists of minutes from board meetings regardinginvestments in information technology (IT) in a Swedish newspaper andprinting company during the years 1971–1989. The analysis shows that it wasvarious aspects of manoeuvre inertia that postponed the necessary changes totake place and furthermore that the frame of reference used still is valid in orderto analyse and understand organisational inertia. To a manager in a businessworld that is in a state of constant change (often spurred by various ITinnovations), the inertia concept can contribute to deepening the analysis offactors that may influence the change necessary to realise the full potential ofan IT investment.

  • Managing complexity through business relationships : The case of the Swedish electricity market
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Management and Decision Making. - : Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.. - 1462-4621 .- 1741-5187. ; 18:2, s. 209-227
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the industrial market, electricity is an essential resource for production, as a stop in its flow may cause expensive production loss and thus tremendous cost. This strong resource dependence and the inevitable competition that comes with deregulation of the market, makes the electricity business complex and relationships of long-term orientation to form. To study such relationships, a mixed method is applied to provide contextual knowledge: by four interviews and a descriptive model and a structural model with three hypotheses developed (n = 122). Managers of products that may seem simple and traded in a market where low cost prevails should think again - stable relationships are a necessity for rational decisions also in this case, particularly since interdependence is influential.

  • Semi-Star Schema for Operational and Analytical Requirements of SMEs
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Management and Decision Making. - 1462-4621 .- 1741-5187. ; 10:1-2, s. 33-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Decision-making is a very complex process, as it requires complete knowledge and analysis of the business happenings. Large organisations are using data warehouse for analysis of their business because of its specialised properties. But, these organisations bear high maintenance cost, if operational sources are changed. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) cannot afford development and maintenance cost of data warehouse therefore their decision quality suffers. In order to equip these enterprises with data warehousing functionalities, key-properties of DW are analysed and decision-support (analytical) requirements of SMEs are collected. Based on the analysis, semi-star schema is proposed and evaluated for its advantages. In our study, we have found that semi-star schema can be used for fulfilling operational and analytical requirements of SME.

  • Virtual data warehouse : Implementation and experimental comparison
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Management and Decision Making. - 1462-4621 .- 1741-5187. ; 11:1, s. 69-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the virtual data warehousing (VDW) concept, by evaluating its capabilities to solve the problems that are identified in recent studies. In this study, we have developed a tool (called VDW-tool), with the capability of implementing virtual data warehouse, and proposed a framework (called 4-DEF), for evaluation of data warehouse. In order to evaluate the virtual data warehouse, we have compared its capabilities with conventional data warehouse, by means of 4-DEF framework. To demonstrate that, results from four experimental case studies are included in this paper. It is found that virtual data warehouse not only enhances schema and content flexibility, but it also provides on-the-fly data for decision support purposes. Furthermore, our experiments demonstrate that the performance of conventional data warehouse (DW) is slightly better than virtual data warehouse, as long as the size of DW is not too large.

  • Dairy market selection approach using MCDM methods : A case of Iranian dairy market
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Management and Decision Making. - : Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.. - 1462-4621 .- 1741-5187. ; 19:3, s. 267-311
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses the development of a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) procedure including a pattern extraction from success and failure of current market introduction to generate a logical framework for target market selection. In addition of covering the gap of comprehensive research in Iran’s domestic dairy market, using combined MCDM methods and grey systems, the main problem this paper tries to solve is the selection of a target market which covers not only the limitations of the company’s current markets but also possesses their advantages. A real-world implementation of the approach is done within a dairy company located in Iran. Considering Tehran, the North, Khuzestan, and West Azerbaijan as the current market, and also Mashhad, Isfahan, Shiraz, and Tabriz as the potential market, Shiraz selected as the best target market through analysis of various criteria. Results show that considering current markets has a big influence on the market ranking procedure.
