The purpose was to measure students' self reported beliefs reflecting sensitivity and openness to cultural diversity before and after the international experience.METHODS: A pre-post-test design was used and the Beliefs, Events, and Values Inventory was administered to international undergraduate and graduate nursing students.RESULTS: The group aggregate data analysis indicate that prior to the start of the workshop, the group presented itself as quite introspective and after the workshop the group reported being more sophisticated in making causal explanations about why the world works in the way it does.CONCLUSIONS: Nursing students experienced an expanded awareness of their beliefs and values that reflect a greater degree of intercultural sensitivity for acceptance of inclusivity and diversity after the experience.

    • OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate differences in academic achievement between two groups of students who were taught the same course online within the nursing program but through two different teaching strategies and to examine the students' attitudes towards flipped classroom.METHODS: Online lectures using Zoom was given to teach a course regarding the immune system and another course was taught the same subject in flipped classroom approach using video lectures followed by seminars. Academic achievement were compared between the groups, and perspectives on flipped classroom were investigated using a questionnaire.RESULTS: The main findings were that participation in flipped classroom seminars had a positive effect on academic achievement (OR 2.3 (CI [1.001-5.1]), and that students preferred the flipped classroom approach over traditional lectures.CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that a student centered teaching strategy like flipped classroom is an effective way to increase the students' engagement and academic achievements.

  • Students inadequate knowledge about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Nursing Education Scholarship. - 1548-923X. ; 6:1, s. Article11-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little consideration is given to personal relationships and sexuality issues in medical care education and little if any time is allocated to non-heterosexual aspects. The present study uses a descriptive, comparative design, and a modified version of the Knowledge about Homosexuality Questionnaire to investigate nursing and medical students' knowledge on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons. The participants were students at a Swedish university in semester 6 of their education programs, and the response rate was 92% (n=124). The aim of the study was to look at the students' access to knowledge concerning LGBT. Shortcomings in LGBT knowledge were seen in the student groups surveyed irrespective of education program, gender or religious belief. Accordingly, it is likely that heteronormativity will continue to project its undemocratic spirit in all communication, treatment and care if something is not done with immediate effect.

  • Generic and professional outcomes of a general nursing education program – a national study of higher education.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nursing Education Scholarship. - 1548-923X. ; 5:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A majority of nursing education today is given within the frame of higher education. In combination with a health-care sector that is rapidly changing this has put the focus on outcome of education. This study focuses on this outcome in terms of generic and professional skills and the professional preparedness of the students. In total 1110 students in their final semester of a general nursing program at 24 universities in Sweden answered a questionnaire. The results revealed that the students perceived themselves having especially developed their information seeking abilities, critical and analytical thinking, and professional knowledge and skills. They did not perceived the education had contributed to their understanding of people from other cultures or how to engage in the development in society to the same extent. Significant differences between men and women were found in almost all studied areas regarding outcome of the education.

  • A review and comparison of post registration midwifery curriculum in Sri Lanka with global standards
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Nursing Education Scholarship. - 2194-5772. ; 20:1, s. 8
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the findings of a study comparing the post-registration midwifery curriculum (PRMC) taught in Sri Lanka with the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) curriculum and five other selected curricula from other parts of the world to train midwifery trained registered nurses (MTRNs). In so doing, we consider the historical origins of post-registration midwifery training and its implications for modern teachings in Sri Lanka and other low-middle income countries (LMICs). Data collected through document review are read, summarized, and compared using checklists across different curricula components, content, and length. The wide variation in terms of length of the programs, content covered, the ratio of theoretical to practical content, and the range of skills and competencies developed has implications for the individual and professional growth of MTRNs. While there is a need to align the PRMC with the ICM standards to ensure safer maternity care in Sri Lanka, implications for developingand promoting the growth of midwifery as a strong independent body in LMIC is discussed.
