  • Port logistics platform integration in supply chain management
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics. - 1756-6517 .- 1756-6525. ; 1:2, s. 194-210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The theme of this study is to present a comprehensive theoretical analysis and conceptual foundation of the port logistics platform as it relates to supply chain management discipline using a system theory approach. In this research paper, three main systems were identified: namely port logistics system, multimodal transport system and information and communication system as a constituent of the port logistics platform. Each system is associated with a specific type of flow, and these systems are closely interrelated. In the meantime, supply chain management and port logistics platform are the main entities governing the port logistics integration processes. The result of the research shows that the port might be a functional element within the supply chains through adapting the system theory approach, in particular soft system methodology. In addition, the proposed framework in relation to the value migration construct provides a better understanding of the contemporary port logistics platform set-up and interrelationship. The theoretical and practical implications of this emerging phenomenon are also discussed in this study.

  • A value chain analysis of a seaport from the perspective of Industry 4.0
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics. - 1756-6517 .- 1756-6525. ; 12:4, s. 367-397
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main aim of this study is to reveal the role and contribution of Industry 4.0 in the value chain of seaports. It first reviews the literature to identify value chain activities in the port industry. It then explores the Industry 4.0 applications utilised by ports through content analysis of the websites of ten major innovative seaports. Seven main technological characteristics of Industry 4.0, namely digitalisation, autonomisation, transparency, mobility, modularisation, network-collaboration and socialising, are used as the main research main categories. The findings show that ports engage with Industry 4.0 in four different modules namely port community systems, cyber-physical systems, internet of things and big data. These four modules enable ports to achieve cost leadership advantages in their quest for competitiveness. To achieve differentiation, on the other hand, they need to increase connectivity with customers and stakeholders through communication channels such as social media.

  • In-transit distribution as a strategy in a global distribution system
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1756-6517 .- 1756-6525. ; 3:2, s. 198-209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Distribution has become a key factor in today's logistics system due to companies' desires to achieve considerable economies of scale in production, achieved by focused factories, as well as customers' demands for shorter lead-times and customer adapted products. The purpose of this research is to investigate if the in-transit distribution strategy may offer companies a competitive advantage and may be used as a complement to the centralised distribution strategy and/or the decentralised distribution strategy. This study shows that the in-transit distribution strategy can give major competitive advantages by offering rather short lead-times for customers without having to store products locally in warehouses. This, in turn, gives lower warehousing costs, lower tied-up capital, a less interrupted manufacturing, and steady and continuous production volumes. In order to be successful with this strategy, it takes good planning, working closely with customers, good market knowledge, and an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system that is able to support the strategy sufficiently. Among these factors, low variation in demand as well as manufacturing output is required, and furthermore distribution lead time needs to be predictable.

  • The use of third party logistics services by Swedish manufacturing firms: current situation and future prospects
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics. - 1756-6517 .- 1756-6525. ; 1:4, s. 396-418
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this research is to examine the usage of TPL services by manufacturing firms in Sweden. The paper focuses on several key issues relating to the extent of usage of TPL services; decision-making process; the impact of using TPL services on user firms; specific TPL services that were used and future plans to use TPL services. More than half of the respondents were using TPL services and most of the users were satisfied with their service providers. While cost consideration was still critical, customer satisfaction reliability and service quality were becoming more crucial to decision-making and evaluation. This research provides results and analysis to practitioners by depicting the impacts of using TPL services. It also gives information to TPL service providers so they can better understand the current situation and future challenges.

  • What drives European port traffic? The role of competition
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1756-6517 .- 1756-6525. ; 10:5-6, s. 618-641
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the determinants of traffic in European ports in 2010 by estimating a generalised linear model with a gamma distribution. We examine the influence of various economic and geographic attributes of the urban areas in which the ports are located, along with the influence of variables that identify the intensity of competition that the respective port authorities face. We include a range of explanatory factors of port traffic including the GDP of the urban area, location, the share of transhipment traffic, the share of dedicated terminals, the volume of traffic from neighbouring ports, the level of connectivity with other transportation modes and the port's model of governance. Our results suggest that variables outside of port manager control, like the economic size of the urban area or the amount of traffic of neighbouring ports, are key determinants of the traffic that a port is able to reach.

  • The role of logistics service providers in the implementation of a differentiated supply chain
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1756-6517 .- 1756-6525. ; 3:2, s. 151-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research investigates the role of logistics service providers in the implementation of a differentiated supply chain. The issue is examined through a multiple case study combined with a literature review. The research shows that logistics service providers can support companies with the implementation of a differentiated supply chain in sourcing and distribution parts by providing services that the company is incapable to provide, by providing certain services more efficiently or by providing complementing services. In some situations, the logistics service provider is even responsible for the entire implementation and should continuously develop the logistics process and customised service according to the company’s market situation. Eurasian transportation flows are nowadays an important part of most supply chains and needs to be considered in this differentiation work. Logistics service providers operating in these flows can support the differentiation by providing more customised and differentiated transportation services and there is a demand for more transportation alternatives in these flows.

  • Seaport strategies for pre-emptive defence of market share under changing hinterland transport system performance
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1756-6517 .- 1756-6525. ; 5:4-5, s. 432-448
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Main deep sea ports that are market leaders in their regions will continuously defend their market shares. The most constructive way of defending market shares is to predict changes of important competitive factors in the markets and to react to factors representing threats by developing preemptive defence strategies. Two main competitive factors in the hinterland of main deep sea ports have been identified: the improving performance of road-rail intermodal transport systems and the development of new dedicated port hinterland transport systems, e.g., systems based on dry ports and direct rail shuttles. This paper analyses whether these two competitive factors in the focal port's hinterland will represent future threats to the port's market share of intercontinental container flows and derives effective pre-emptive strategies for the focal port's defence of its market share in competition with other main deep sea ports.
