  • New Rituals Out of an Old One : The Slava among Serbian Immigrants in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion in Europe. - Leiden : Brill Academic Publishers. - 1874-8910 .- 1874-8929. ; 13, s. 23-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Slava or Krsna slava is the Serbian Orthodox celebration of a family’s patron saint on a given day of the year. During the decades of Socialist Yugoslavia (1943–1992), it was confined to the private sphere only. Since the 1960s, there is a sizeable group of Yugoslavia Serbian immigrants in Sweden and the Serbian Orthodox Church in Sweden claims40,000 members. The article is based on eleven semi-structured interviews with immigrants who have started celebrating the Slava in Sweden. We identified four frames of interpretation used in order to provide the ritual with meaning: Orthodoxy, family, ethnicity, and the local community. A closer discussion of three cases illustrates different ways of finding a balance between Slava’s possible meanings. The ways of celebrating display individual variation and the varying influence of the culture and values of the host society.

  • Religion Between Politics and Media : Conflicting Attitudes to Islam in Scandinavia
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion in Europe. - : Brill. - 1874-8910 .- 1874-8929. ; 10:4, s. 437-456
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on a comparative project on media and religion across Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, this article analyzes relationships between religiosity and political attitudes in Scandinavia and how these connect with attitudes regarding the representation of Islam in various media. Data comes from population-wide surveys conducted in the three countries in April 2015. Most Scandinavians relate ‘religion’ with conflict, and half of the population perceives Islam as a threat to their national culture. Scandinavians thus perceive religion in terms of political tensions and predominantly feel that news media should serve a critical function towards Islam and religious conflicts. Finally, the results of the empirical analysis are discussed in view of the intertwined processes of politicization of Islam and mediatization of religion.

  • Religion, Mediatization and ‘Complementary learning processes’ in Swedish Editorials
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion in Europe. - : Brill. - 1874-8910 .- 1874-8929. ; 10:4, s. 366-383
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyzes positions and arguments in editorials from Swedish newspapers during the period of 1976–2010 regarding the place of religion in modern, democratic society. Starting from Habermas’ call for changes in European political discourse in a post-secular situation, the article analyzes whether signs of ‘complementary learning processes’ can be found in the editorials, where alternatives to a secularist understanding of religion are expressed. Findings suggest that mediatization through increased politicization of the daily press contributes to a re-articulation of the former secularist discourse in Swedish editorials. A salient theme in this alternative discourse is the tension between religious freedom and other citizen rights.

  • The Internal Discussions in the Belarusian Orthodox Church on Identity and Policy Issues : A Contemporary Perspective
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion in Europe. - : Brill Academic Publishers. - 1874-8910 .- 1874-8929. ; 15:1-4, s. 81-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on extensive fieldwork across Belarus, this article analyses an ongoing discussion within the Belarusian Orthodox Church (boc) regarding various issues that are key inassessing the country’s identity politics and politico-ideological developments. Since the independence of Belarus in 1991, the Church has continuously played an important public and societal function. A special agreement, signed between the Church and Belarusian Government in 2003, has fostered Church cooperation with various governmental institutions, including educational establishments. Discussing the contribution of the boc to the construction of a distinct Belarusian national identity, we will address the national language, relationships with the state, foreign policy orientation and the Church’s autocephaly. The empirical part of this study is based on seventeen in-depth interviews with clergymen and laypeople from the boc. Our study shows that Church representatives have not hesitated to develop their profound perspectives on the important issues of identity politics and the relationships of the boc and state, and these perspectives were often reflective of wider debates within Belarusian intellectual circles.

  • The Image of Islam and Muslims in Swedish Radical Christian Press
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Religion in Europe. - : Brill Academic Publishers. - 1874-8910 .- 1874-8929. ; 5, s. 192-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This is a case study on the construction of Islam and Muslims in sixty editorials 2006 in a Swedish Evangelical newspaper, Världen idag (“The World Today”). The paper was founded in 2001 and is offfijicially independent and non-denominational. In reality, it is fijinancially and ideologically dependent on the radical faith movement. Its circulation is about 8,500. The main theme in the selected editorials is “Muslim threat,” in some cases combined with “Western retreat” and “Islam’s incompatibility with democracy.” Islam and Muslims are consistently described as causing these problems. However, terms denoting Muslims are rarely derogatory, instead Muslims are depicted in terms of broad denotation, like “Muslims” or “the Muslim world.” These labels are often combined with a stark derogatory complement . Aggressive acts like “demanding” and “murdering” or “mass-murdering” are the most common ones associated with Muslims. Good Muslim behavior is constantly disregarded; bad behavior reflects true character. Muslims are depicted as one homogeneous stereotypical and static group.
