  • Insomnia thresholds and associated factors among Omani university students
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Africa Nursing Sciences. - : Elsevier Ltd.. - 2214-1391. ; 17, s. 6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Insomnia is the most predominant sleep disorder affecting the general population and is a significant health concern. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence and predictors of insomnia among Omani university students. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design was used. Six hundred and thirty-two university students were recruited through convenience sampling and completed four self-reported surveys: (1) Depression, Anxiety and Stress scale; (2) Smartphone Addiction scale; (3) Insomnia Severity Index, and (4) demographics sheets, accessed through the Google Forms link posted on Twitter. Results: Almost two thirds of the participants suffered from insomnia, of whom a third part suffered from sub-threshold insomnia, another third had moderate insomnia, and a tenth part suffered from severe insomnia. A multivariate regression analysis revealed that age, preparing for exams, smartphone addiction, and stress were significant associated factors of insomnia. Conclusion: Althoughthe study identified high level of insomnia and significant associations between insomnia and exam preparation, smartphone addiction, and stress; insomnia is a far more complex phenomenon. We therefore recommend further studies to follow up the development of this population and to identify actions to combat this high level of insomnia. Nurses, public health workers, health coaches, and other clinically active professionals could collaborate to build programs to promote healthy use of smartphones in young individuals in order to combat insomnia.

  • Healthcare-seeking behaviour and management of type 2 diabetes : From Ugandan traditional healers’ perspective
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Africa Nursing Sciences. - : Elsevier. - 2214-1391. ; 5, s. 17-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Healthcare-seeking behaviour has been investigated to a limited extent in persons with diabetes, and the way traditional healers manage diabetes still needs exploration. Aim To explore healthcare-seeking behaviour and management of type 2 diabetes from the perspective of traditional healers in the folk sector to understand how traditional medicine is integrated into the professional health sector. Design A qualitative descriptive study. Method A purposeful sample of 16 traditional healers known in the area. Data were collected by individual semi-structured interviews. Findings Healthcare was sought from the professional health sector, mainly from the public hospitals, before the patients switched to the traditional healers. Reasons for seeking help from traditional healers were mainly chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and the perceived failure of western medicine to manage diabetes. The cost at the healers’ facilities also influenced healthcare seeking because it was perceived to be affordable as it was negotiable and accessible because it was always available. Traditional medicine therapies of patients with diabetes were herbal medicine, nutritional products and counselling, but many patients whose conditions were difficult to manage were told to return to the public hospitals in the professional health sector. Conclusion Healthcare seeking was inconsistent in character, with a switch between different healthcare providers. Living conditions including treatment costs, healthcare organization, patients’ health beliefs and general condition seemed to influence healthcare seeking practice. © 2016 The Authors

  • Perception knowledge and attitude of nursing students towards the care of older patients
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Africa Nursing Sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-1391. ; 7, s. 37-42
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objectives of the study were to assess the perception, knowledge, and attitude of nursing students towards old age and care of the older adults and to examine personal characteristics that could predict their attitude. Two hundred and eighty students were systematically selected from learning institutions for nursing in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Data on perception, knowledge, and attitude were collected with the aid of a validated self-administered questionnaire. Descriptive analysis and inferential statistics were done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Results showed that 66.1% and 71.8% of respondents had a positive perception and attitudes towards the care of older people, respectively. It further revealed that respondents believed that nurses should be patient, cheerful and sensitive (97.2%); as well as empathetic (91.4%) when caring for the older patients. The respondents also expressed that caring for the older patients goes beyond the basic nursing care (66.1%) and 90% supported the need for a geriatric unit in the hospital. Furthermore, 60% of respondents demonstrated good knowledge of essential clinical practice in the care of older patients. There was a statistically significant association between attitude and perception (OR=1.11; p=0.002) and age category 20–25 (OR=0.45; p=0.04). However, there was no significant association between the attitude of the respondents and knowledge (χ2=4.16; df=2; p=0.125). The study concluded that the respondents have positive perception and attitude as well as good knowledge towards the care of the older adults. These should be reinforced to enhance a better clinical outcome in the care of the older adults. © 2017

  • Factors affecting HIV disclosure among partners in Morongo, Tanzania
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Africa Nursing Sciences. - : Elsevier. - 2214-1391. ; 10, s. 49-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a major concern globally and locally. Married couples and those in stable relationships account for the highest percentage of new HIV and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) infections. The rate of HIV disclosure among couples is low and affected by both known and unknown factors. The aim of this study was to describe the reasons for HIV status (non)disclosure among partners in Morongo. Methods: A sampling containing two stages was used in this quantitative, exploratory, and descriptive study to select the 100 participants. The location was a Care and Treatment Clinic in the Morogoro municipality. Results: The participants had a moderate level of knowledge about the importance of HIV serostatus disclosure. Female genital mutilation was the most mentioned (44%) custom affecting disclosure. The participants’ level of knowledge about their partner's HIV status was also moderate (28%). Nitty-six percent had not disclosed due to fear of divorce and 98% due to fear of loss of financial support. Cultural factors such as traditional practices (95%) were also a major reason that hindered disclosure. Conclusions: Interventions to address the negative attitudes are necessary to promote HIV disclosure and, in turn, better adherence to psychological adjustment therapy and reduction in the risk of HIV transmission among couples.

  • Efficiency of medical technology in measuring service quality in the Nigerian healthcare sector
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Africa Nursing Sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-1391. ; 16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The medical sector is one of the service sectors whose core value is based on quality services. However, maintaining quality within healthcare settings is a complicated task. Medical innovations and quality care are critical in the current market environment, thus creating a strong rivalry between service providers. For this reason, healthcare centers must evaluate the standard of their care. The article examines medical technologies and the quality of the services to see if medical technology will increase the quality of services in the healthcare system in a sustainable healthcare system. This paper followed a systemic literature review using ATLAS.ti 9 tools, in which the proof was saved, classified, and interpreted. Study findings have shown the importance of medical technology in the contemporary era. Further studies found that cleanliness, sanitation, physicians’ expertise, nurses’ abilities, and other aspects, which can be viewed as standard care, impressed patients in the hospital environment. In general, the study results may enable hospital managers and medical staff to perceive medical technology as an essential factor that significantly determines the quality of service in Nigeria's healthcare sector.

  • Online learning needs, facilitators, and barriers for continuous professional development among nurses, midwives, and physicians in Rwanda
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Africa Nursing Sciences. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 2214-1391. ; 18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Continuous professional development (CPD) is necessary for every healthcare professional, but it is even more important in developing countries. In addition to the traditional need for CPD to keep improving the quality of service delivery, in developing countries, some health professionals work in remote areas where they lack the experience of senior colleagues. In this regard, online CPD is among the strategies that can improve the quality of health care services delivery. Aim: Thus, this study assessed the needs, facilitators, and barriers of using online learning for continuous professional development among nurses, midwives, and physicians in Rwanda. Design: The study used a cross-sectional study design and a survey to collect quantitative data from physicians, nurses, and midwives on their views about online learning for continuous professional development needs, facilitators, and barriers. Method: The study used proportionate stratified random sampling strategy to collect quantitative data from 261 participants from 51 health institutions. The major analysis used was descriptive statistics in terms of describing the responses of participants in percentages and frequencies. Results: The findings indicate that 97.3% of participants consider the importance of CPD, 71.6% prefer blended approach for CPD, and 86.5% use smartphones. About the internet status, 28.0% of participants reported to have fast and stable internet, 57.1% to have fast but not stable internet, and 14.2% reported to have not fast and stable internet. Conclusion: Nurses, midwives, and physicians perceive online learning as a good source of continuing professional development, but its implementation must depend on improved internet access, compatible technology with smartphones, or increasing the availability of computers and tablets at health institutions. © 2023 The Author(s)
