  • Understanding animals : A critical challenge in ACI
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: NordiCHI '18 Proceedings of the 10th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450364379 ; , s. 148-160
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a qualitative content analysis of visual-verbal social media posts, where ordinary dog owners pretend to be their canine, to identify meaningful facets in their dogs' life-worlds, e.g. pleasures of human-dog relation, dog-dog relations, food etc. We use this knowledge to inform design of "quantified pets". The study targets a general problem in Animal-Computer Interaction (ACI), i.e. to understand animals when designing "for" them, although lacking a common language. Several approaches, e.g. ethnography and participatory design, have been appropriated from HCI without exhausting the issue. We argue for a methodological creativity and pluralism by suggesting an additional approach drawing on "kinesthetic empathy". It implies to understand animals by empathizing with their bodily movements over time and decoding the realities of their life-worlds. This, and other related approaches, has inspired animal researchers to conduct more or less radical participant observations during extensive duration to understand the perspective of the other. We suggest that dog owners whom share their lives with their dogs already possess a similar understanding as these experts, and thus uphold important experiences of canine life that could be used to understand individual dogs and inspire design.

  • Sensepack : An In-Between Wearable for Body-Backpack Communication
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: NordiCHI '18. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450364379 ; , s. 922-927
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Backpacks are often heavy and can be a significant cause of pain. To avoid pain, they must be worn in a certain way and readjusted when they move. Yet, recognising when to adjust a backpack is not self-evident. It is an evolving embodied process—a subtle, negotiation between body and pack. We present Sensepack, a wearable that sits in-between a backpacker’s body and their pack. Sensepack supports novice backpackers to learn to recognise and sense backpack displacement. It monitors shifts in weight distribution, using four textile-sensors to determine imbalances and provides tactile, real-time feedback. We evaluated Sensepack through user testing—indoors on stairs, and in the field. Our preliminary findings suggest that Sensepack may be useful for learning to identify shifts in backpack weight that can cause long-term stress on the body.

  • Employing the secondary task technique for measuring MRP pilots' cognitive load
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 10th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction. - New York, NY, USA : ACM Press. - 9781450364379 ; , s. 706-710
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mobile Remote Presence (MRP) technologies make it possible for the user to be mobile in a remote environment, which opens up new possibilities for interaction. However, this new functionality comes at a cost. The need for MRP system users to pay attention to both telecommunication and device navigation increases their cognitive load. Assessing the cognitive load of MRP system users is a timely research issue, which is addressed in this paper both conceptually and empirically. We argue that Secondary Task (ST) techniques have certain advantages over existing Subjective Rating Scales (SRS) instruments, and report a study, in which a particular ST technique, a visual monitoring task, was employed to assess MRP pilot’s cognitive load. The empirical evidence from the study indicates that the method provides additional valuable insights into MRP pilots’ user experience.

  • Decision-support System for Cancer Rehabilitation : Designing for Incorporating of Quantified Data into an Existing Practice
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 10th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction. - New York, NY, USA : ACM Publications. - 9781450364379 ; , s. 747-753
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Recent development in self-monitoring devices indicates that using quantified data in clinical practicesupporting chronic diseases management holds a big potential. However, exploration of this design space also suggests that some unattended challenges still exist, such as a low adoption rate of self-monitoring tools in existing clinical practice. In this text, wetherefore focus on the ways healthcare professionalsuse quantified data in their practice. We draw onempirical data from an ethnographic study of a cancer rehabilitation center. Our preliminary findings suggestthat the self-monitoring tool supported the nurses'work because it became a functional complement totheir work by allowing them to appropriate the deviceto their and the patients' needs.

  • 'Datafied' reading : framing behavioral data and algorithmic news recommendations
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 10th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450364379 ; , s. 125-136
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are increasing concerns about how people discover news online and how algorithmic systems affect those discoveries. We investigate how individuals made sense of behavioral data and algorithmic recommendations in the context of a system that transformed their online reading activities into a new data source. We apply Goffman's frame analysis to a qualitative study of Scoopinion, a collaborative news recommender system that used tracked reading time to recommend articles from whitelisted websites. Based upon ten user interviews and one designer interview, we describe 1) the process through which reading was framed as a `datafied' activity and 2) how behavioral data was interpreted as socially meaningful and communicative, even in the absence of overtly social system features, producing what we term `implicit sociality'. We conclude with a discussion of how our findings about Scoopinion and its users speak to similar issues with more popular and more complex algorithmic systems.

  • Designing for Diverse Stakeholder Engagement in Resource-Intensive Practices
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 10th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450364379
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite many contributions to Sustainable HCI stressing the importance of “moving beyond the individual”, a majority of HCI work is still targeted mainly at consumers or resource users. However, many stakeholders influence resource use and including such stakeholders in design work can open up new design opportunities for supporting sustainable practices. In this paper, we present results from a longitudinal study of practices related to energy improvement work in housing cooperatives. During the study, we discovered new opportunities for interactive technologies to support this work when we involved various stakeholders other than housing cooperatives. In addition, we discuss more general implications for design aiming to support diverse stakeholder engagement in practices related to resource use: which stakeholders and practices to include, temporal aspects of engagement, and opportunities for supporting shared responsibility for resource use.

  • Humor in design fiction to suspend disbelief and belief
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: NordiCHI '18. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450364379 ; , s. 801-818
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates humor as a resource and strategy for design with discourse as an intended outcome. While humor can incite empathy and understanding, it can also lead to alienation and disengagement. Through the detailing of the pre-narrative and narrative processes of a design fiction, we describe why and how elements of humor, in particular puns, parody, and pastiche, were employed. Following the presentation of the fiction and its use in the design of an exhibition of diegetic prototypes, the paper presents responses from participants and audience members to reflect upon how the humor was received. Following a discussion on these reflections, as the near-future scenario was written four years prior and is now situated within the present-day, it then concludes with a post-mortem reflection on the floating nature of humor.

  • Understanding Grassroots Sports Gamification in the Wild
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: NordiCHI '18 Proceedings of the 10th Nordic Conference on Human-Computer Interaction. - New York : ACM. - 9781450364379 ; , s. 102-113
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While gamification is an often used tool in building interactive experiences for sports, little work has addressed systems designed by users for users and deeply embedded in the social setting of physical exercise. Consequently, a better understanding of sports gamification in the wild is needed to build systems that reflect the users' pre-existing social context. This paper presents a qualitative study of a gamification system, the Boar Board, designed by a sports coach to support users participating in regular exercises. Through surveys, interviews and observations over eight months, we built an understanding of the user adoption of the system and how the Boar Board supported the goals of the group. Based on this, we endeavour to understand the social aspects of the system, including trust, and posit a number of design considerations for future inquiry into gamification systems for sports.

  • Digital Body Language : Exploration of Corporal Expression in Digitally Mediated Written Communication
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: NORDICHI'18. - New York, NY, USA : ACM Digital Library. - 9781450364379 ; , s. 940-943
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This demonstration presents Digital Body Language, a text processor that integrates the dynamics of the writing process into digitally mediated written communication. The presented prototype is an experiment on how to visually convey more of the users personal writing style and emotional state, as a part of the static text. At large, the project sets to explore the question of Which characteristics of interactions with technology could open the design space for a new context, that could be perceived and processed simultaneously and interdependently with language? Approaching this question, we build on the theory of Slow Technology, Defamiliarization, and Embodied Interaction and use performance as a way to invoke reflection on digitally mediated communication.
