    • A parabolic cylindrical reflector antenna is proposed in this paper for wireless multi-gigabit communications at 60 GHz. The line feed is realized by a power distribution in parallel plate waveguide (PPW). Inside the PPW waveguide there are metal pin rows forming the contours of an H-plane horn structure in front of a parabolic reflector, where we see possible mechanical advantages in not requiring metal contact of the pins to more than one metal plate. They will still work as a total reflecting wall by making use of the same stopband features as in gap waveguide technology. The result is a low loss, low cost and very versatile 60 GHz antenna with high gain. The electrical design for maximum aperture efficiency and minimum loss is explained.

    • The coverage shaping and interference reduction ability of base station antenna tilt are important tools in cellular network optimization. Through tilt changes, the coverage area of a serving cell may also be either reduced or expanded. Therefore, antenna tilt has the potential to be used for load balancing purposes. This paper gives an overview of base station antennas performance and antenna tilt. Simulations are performed in order to determine the impact of tilt changes when used for load balancing. The results show that while antenna tilt load balancing can improve the Grade of Service (GoS) in a congested cell, it will also influence the user bit rates and total cell throughput for both the congested cell and the neighbors.

    • We present two different measurement techniques intended for closed metal vessels, where the objective is to measure the permittivity inside the metal vessel. This problem is relevant for many applications found in e.g. process industry. The first approach exploits the measurement of resonance frequencies, where the metal vessel is used as a microwave resonator. In the second approach, we let the boundary of the metal vessel be equipped with aperture antennas, where the aperture antennas are implemented in terms of rectangular waveguides. The waveguide apertures loads the cavity significantly and we exploit the scattering matrix parameters for the solution of the inverse problem.

    • Antenna Q optimization by a genetic algorithm with method of moments simulation at a single frequency is described. The optimized antennas may have arbitrary shapes within a rectangular region. Simulations using a commercial tool show good agreement between the predicted and realized Q factor. Furthermore, comparison with the physical bound shows that the optimized antennas perform close to the optimum for many electrically small dimensions.

    • Ultra wideband technology becomes more widely used for near-field object detection. We present an aperture synthetic radar (SAR) system using ultra-wideband (UWB) signals for such applications. One of the problems with UWB time-domain SAR imaging algorithm is the artefact originated from scattered field of adjacent objects. In this paper an algorithm based on the Range Point Migration (RPM) method is used to alleviate this problem. This method estimates a possibility distribution of the optimal Direction of Arrival (DOA) of the scattered field from objects. A weighting factor based on this possibility is used to suppress the effect of artifact scattered fields. The results in the paper show that the UWB SAR accompanied with RPM can produce an image of an object with a significant suppression of undesired artifact from scattered field of adjacent objects.

    • An algorithm to compute the Radiation center of an antenna based on the Spherical wave expansion is introduced. The method is based on the angular momentum vector that is uniquely defined for any antenna far field pattern. The radiation center is defined as the unique point where the magnitude of the angular momentum is minimized with respect to translations of the far field. This corresponds to minimizing the phase variations in the antenna far field pattern. In addition the Current distribution axis can be determined, corresponding to minimization of the vertical component of angular momentum.

    • We present three methods for producing lightweight waveguide- and antenna components by autocatalytic electroless copper plating on plastics. Waveguides for the Ku-band are manufactured through; 1) extrusion of ABS plastics; 2) 3D printing with Stereolithography (SLA) polymers and; 3) composite forming in Particle Pressure Chamber (PPC). The three methods covers applications from prototypes to mass production, from in house applications to space approved extremes. In previous autocatalytic methods it has been difficult to exceed 2 μm copper layer but in this work we utilize a method of autocatalytic electroless plating on plastics for unlimited thickness but here stopped at a 4-5 μm thick glossy copper layer. Measurements on conductivity and attenuation have shown that the performance is approaching that of standard aluminium waveguides with 0.0375 dB/cm loss, but with reduced weight and lower cost if made in series. Refined waveguide samples will be measured for the conference presentation.

    • The paper describes the design and simulation of an antenna that will be used in an extremely difficult environment, inside jet engines. The antenna enables wireless sensor network application in an environment that has never been tested before. Due to the extreme limitations, the antenna has to be ultra-thin, but still working. In the paper, the antenna is simulated and then measured in both anechoic and reverberation chamber. Simulated results agree well with the measured values. The radiation efficiency of the antenna is -13 dB and is not much affected when placed in metallic environment.

    • A Topology optimization technique is used for complete layout optimization of the radiating element of a planar monopole antenna. The design objective is to find a conductivity distribution that maximizes the energy received by the planar monopole over the frequency band 1-10 GHz. The finite difference time domain method (FDTD) is used for the numerical calculations, and an adjoint problem is derived to calculate the corresponding sensitivities. Numerical results show a promising use of topology optimization techniques for the systematic design of ultrawideband monopoles.

    • A hybrid MoM/PO method for the analysis of multiple scattering effects between reflector and large feeds, such as dense multibeam phased array feeds or multifrequency front-ends (MFFEs) in which higher frequency feeds operate in the vicinity of an extended metal structure, has been presented and studied. This paper evaluates the accuracy and computational efficiency for the MoM/PO method with and without using a uniform plane wave approximation of the reflector scattered field.
