  • Coordinated control scheme of battery energy storage system (BESS) and distributed generations (DGs) for electric distribution grid operation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. - : IEEE. - 9781467324212 ; , s. 4758-4764
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a coordinated control scheme of battery energy storage system (BESS) and distributed generations (DGs) for electric distribution grid operation. The BESS is designed to stabilize frequency and voltages as a primary control after the electric distribution system enters into the islanding operation mode, while the centralized joint load frequency control (CJLFC) utilizing DGs handles the secondary frequency regulation. The BESS with the associated controllers has been modelled in Real-time digital simulator (RTDS) in order to identify the improvement of the frequency and voltage response. The modified IEEE 9-bus system, which is comprised of several DG units, wind power plant and the BESS, has been employed to illustrate the performance of the proposed coordinated flexible control scheme using RTDS in order to verify its practical efficacy.

  • State-of-the-art of topology processors for EMS and PMU applications and their limitations
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. - : IEEE. - 9781467324212 ; , s. 1422-1427
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article provides a review of the current openly available works in the field of topology processing. The most important works in this area are critically scrutinized, and their limitations are identified. The drawbacks are identified and fully discussed, and their effect on the output of the topology processor is investigated. To support the discussion, the IEEE Reliability Test System 1996 is simulated in real-time to show the deficiencies with the current available topology processor that uses PMU data. The real-time simulation is performed using an eMegaSim Opal-RT real-time simulator which is part of the 'SmarTS Lab' at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Finally, possible potential solutions are briefly proposed as a conclusion.

  • Visualization tool to support multi-agent mechatronic based systems
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. - : IEEE. - 9781467324212 - 9781467324199 - 9781467324205 ; , s. 4372-4377
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been an increasing interest from industry in distributed architectures since they promote a plug-and-produce and robust environment, where adaptability and fault tolerance are native. Much research has been conducted in this field mainly supported by multi-agent and service oriented technologies. Nevertheless the retrieval and visualization of information in distributed systems is a relatively unexplored area. Although the dynamic nature of the multi-agent systems allows gathering information in a prompt manner, doing so might affect the performance of the mechatronic agents. In this sense, the present paper details the architecture of a visualization tool that introduces a reliable but non-invasive approach to retrieve data from distributed platforms as well as a new way to visualize and interpret the information gathered from mechatronic based systems.

  • Analysis of wireless communications in underground tunnels for industrial use
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. - New York : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781467324212 - 9781467324199 ; , s. 3216-3220
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wireless communication is expected to improve the safety and the productivity in underground tunnels for industrial use. However the multiple shapes and structures of tunnels affect wireless communication characteristics in terms of signal propagation which is significantly different from terrestrial environments. This paper presents comprehensive broadband measurements and simulations of multipath propagation and path loss in two underground environments. The results can be used in the development of new communication systems in tunnels that provide industrial services.

  • Evaluation of different carrier-based PWM methods for modular multilevel converters for HVDC application
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. - : IEEE. - 9781467324212 ; , s. 388-393
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The outstanding features of modular multilevel converters (M2C) make it attractive for high voltage direct current (HVDC) systems. In order to achieve high efficiency in HVDC converter stations, the switching frequency and the capacitor voltage ripple of the converter should be minimized. A suitable modulation algorithm should achieve an optimal tradeoff between these two requirements. This paper evaluates different carrier-based PWM algorithms and discusses the most challenging technical aspects of an efficient M2C. It is observed that decoupling the waveform synthesis from the selection of which cell to switch at each instant has beneficial impact on operation performance. The evaluation is done by time-domain simulation considering a grid connected, three-phase M2C converter and an advanced control system. Results of this study can be used for implementing more economical HVDC converters.

  • A SOA-based architecture for empowering future collaborative cloud-based industrial automation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781467324212 ; , s. 5770-5775
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The last years we are witnessing of rapid advances in the industrial automation domain, mainly driven by business needs towards agility and supported by new disruptive tech- nologies. Future factories will rely on multi-system interactions and collaborative cross-layer management and automation ap- proaches. Such a factory, configured and managed from archi- tectural and behavioural viewpoints, under the service-oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm is virtualized by services exposed by its key components (both HW and SW). One of the main results of this virtualization is that the factory is transformed into a ”cloud of services”, where dynamic resource allocation and interactions take place. This paper presents a view on such architecture, its specification, the main motivation and considerations, as well as the preliminary services it may need to support.

  • Leveraging tinyos for integration in process automation and control systems
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781467324212 ; , s. 5779-5785
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The number and complexity of networked sensors and actuators in industrial monitoring and control systems is rapidly increasing. This calls for flexible yet efficient methods (w.r.t. time and money) for designing, deploying and maintaining such systems. To this end, Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) and wireless technologies are foreseen to play important roles. In the area of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), TinyOS (TOS) has gained wide spread use, mainly because it offers a simple programming model. Moreover TOS comes with a ready made code base (e.g., protocol stacks needed to implement SOA enabled devices) and is available for a large number of light-weight target platforms. However, TOS has yet to make its way into industrial applications where real-time operation is required (which is typical to monitoring and control systems). As being designed primarily with simplicity in mind, the TOS execution model for tasks is non-preemptive, limiting system responsiveness and schedulability. To overcome this problem preemptive TOSThreads has been introduced. However, this introduces the additional complexity of traditional multi-thread programming, thus the main benefit of TOS is lost. In this paper we present an alternative execution model for TOS, that allows preemptive execution while preserving the simplicity of vintage TOS. We exemplify the impact of scheduling to a typical sensor/actuator node scenario. Our results indicate that the proposed preemptive execution model is capable of reducing both delay and drop rate for the given scenario.

  • Extended Vector Control of a Rotating Power Electronic Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Generator under Unsymmetrical Voltage Sags
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. - : IEEE. - 9781467324212 ; , s. 1793-1798
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents the implementation of the extended vector control on a new type of brushless doubly-fed generator when subjected to unsymmetrical voltage dips. This new type of generator has partially rated power electronic converter and exciter mounted on the shaft and rotating with it. The unbalanced voltages introduce positive and negative sequence components in the generator. The negative sequence components gives rise to torque oscillations and extra heating in the generator and power electronics which could affect the life time of the shaft, gearbox and electronic equipment. Two separate synchronous reference frames are defined and standard PI controllers are implemented in the reference frames in order to control the positive and negative sequence currents independently. Through these means the effect of the negative sequence currents is mitigated and it is shown that the oscillations in the behavior of this new type of generator are considerably reduced.

  • Frequency-Domain Modeling of Modular Multilevel Converters With Application to Maximizing the Operating Region
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. - : IEEE. - 9781467324212 ; , s. 4967-4972
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modular multilevel converters (MMC), based on cascading of half-bridge converter cells, can combine low switching frequency with low harmonic interference. They can be designed for high operating voltages without direct series connection of semiconductor elements. This has led to a rapid adoption within high-power applications such as high voltage direct current transmission, railway interties and medium voltage industrial motor drives. Analyzing the operation of these converters in the frequency domain poses a few challenges due to the presence of significant low-order harmonic voltages in the cell capacitors. This paper treats a frequency-domain methodology for computing inner variables of the MMC with half-bridge cells, based on a two-stage approach. First, the circuit equations are decoupled by a simple linear transformation, whereby the circuit schematic can be separated into a dc-side and an ac-side part. Second, the variables of the cell strings are computed in the frequency domain by iterated convolution. It is shown that the proposed methodology, where all calculations are made in the frequency domain, can accurately reproduce the results from a PSCAD simulation. Furthermore, the model is successfully employed as part of an optimization algorithm for maximizing the power handling capability of the converter by appropriately controlling the circulating current and zero-sequence ac-side voltage. Results from this work point to significant possibilities for improvement.

  • Mechanical drive train emulation by means of electrical drives - a generalised approach
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IECON 2012 - 38th Annual Conference on IEEE Industrial Electronics Society. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781467324212 ; , s. 1878-1883
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The emulation of mechanical systems by means of electrical systems is an application of electrical machines and drives which have received increased attention in the recent years. As power electronics-controlled machines are dynamically faster than conventional mechanical systems, it is widely recognised that the behaviour of the latter can be emulated by a proper electrical machine torque control. Different test benches with different emulation capabilities have been proposed in the literature, but few attention has been posed to two aspects: the requirements of the drive emulator in terms of rated torque and/or power and/or bandwidth, and the emulation of effects like mechanical resonances within test benches with rigid mechanical connection. The paper tries to focus on these two aspects with both simulation and experimental results, in order to depict a general approach to the design of a drive emulator.
