  • A review of secure emergency communications : technical and organisational aspects
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 32nd Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia, IRIS 32, Inclusive Design. - 9788279621201
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In organizations responsible for emergency management there is a growing need to develop deep understanding for how communications between emergency actors can be secured and improved. In this paper we examine the current body of knowledge in the field of secure emergency communications in order understand the role of information security in the emergency context? Our study shows that while technical developments aim at effective and secure technologies, organizational aspects of emergency communications seem to involve not only emergency management actors, but also how these actors more and more utilize information technology for emergency management. Hence, the scene or landscape for emergency management is becoming more complex, which indeed challenge the way that secure emergency communications can be understood. We apply Giddens' structuration theory as a vehicle to understand the technological and organizational dimensions of emergency management. Our main conclusion is that there is a need for better theoretical integration between technology use and organizational systems in emergency management.

  • A research proposal for in-car ecological interface design : to get a grip
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 32nd Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia. - Molde, Norway : Molde University. - 9788279621201
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many different tasks are being performed in a ubiquitous environment as a car. The primary task is driving though with new technologies secondary tasks are affecting the driver performance in different ways. Safety is crucial and should never be influenced negative by secondary tasks. A vision of the in-car interface and the interaction with all systems or devices that are being used by the driver is that it can be seen as one environment where the devices and the different systems work pervasive and ubiquitous. The environment must support driver behavior in the future with these tasks whether they are primary or secondary, to remain the safety. In design of complex human-machine system e.g. interaction in a jet fighter cockpit, theories from Ecological Interface Design are applied to get a better understanding of how to design for such complexity where focus on one device at a time rarely occur. The ecological part is to see all the devices, interfaces in the same environment that interacts with a user as a whole. The question is; How should one design the work domain so that a driver can be adaptive in varied situations based on the information being visualized or communicated from different interfaces in a car, with consideration to driver experience and safety?

  • Research in Information Systems : Implications of the constant changing  nature of IT in the social computing era
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Selected Papers of the 32nd Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia. - : Molde University College. - 9788279621201 ; , s. 121-136
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The discussion of the core identity of IS research is dominated by a heatedcontroversy between the narrow and the broad views. The paper reviews differentperspectives of the core identity of IS and stand in with the broad view. It argued thatthe constant changes and developments of IT capabilities dynamically drive the corefocus of IS research and thus a broader view should be adopted. The paper presents therecent changes and developments of IT in the social computing era where we have shownhow recent developments have widened the scope of IS research by involving multiplesocial aspects of investigation. The paper concluded by proposing some properties of ISresearch in this era.

  • From products to services in the forestry industry : ICT as an enabler for creating an Open Innovation system
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 32nd Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia. - 9788279621201
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Most forestry machines being produced today include a PC that monitors and controls the harvester head, and an information system that stores data on every action the driver or the machine performs. ICT thus provides an opportunity to improve efficiency and competitiveness and possibly also opens up for new ways of working for actors in the forestry industry. The purpose of this study is to investigate how ICT can enable the transformation from selling products to selling services in the forestry industry. We investigate this through performing a Case Study including a number of actors from the Forestry industry in northern Sweden. First, we investigate the barriers for establishing an Open Innovation system in forestry. Then we describe the main steps to be taken and how the use of ICT can enable the establishment of such a system. The case study shows that the forestry industry is committed to working according to a traditional value chain and is committed to a closed innovation paradigm. We argue that the ICT component in Timbercut’s forestry machines constitutes a latent potential that can be fully captured through changing the business model and setting up a joint venture with Rewire.

  • Overcoming the alliance/innovation paradox : enacting fractionated trading zones in academy/industry collaboration
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 32nd Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia. - 9788279621201
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Collaborative forms of innovation between heterogeneous actors have lately attracted much attention from scholars and practitioners alike. While there is a growing interest from industrial actors to make use of academic knowledge, universities are facing increased incentives and pressure to contribute to economic growth. Despite these efforts, effects of academy/industry collaboration are hard to trace. Except from problems of measuring effects contradictions between stability desired in alliances and the flexibility often advocated in alliances in combination with heterogeneous understandings of cooperation can offer some explanation on this issue. Based on a qualitative case study this paper examines collaborative efforts between twelve IT research centers and industrial actors. The notion of Trading Zones is used as a lens through which negotiation of understandings and efforts are analyzed. More specifically we suggest that collaboration often takes place in fractioned trading zones with heterogeneous cultures. Reducing heterogeneity, creating boundary objects and interactional expertise are found to be strategies used by actors in order to coordinate efforts.

  • Dealing with Stakeholders in Mobile Learning : A Study of Three Initiatives
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceeedings of the 32nd Information Systems Resaerch Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS'32). - : Molde University College. - 9788279621201
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a need to reach viable design for initiatives in mobile learning and researchers are faced with a magnitude of factors to consider. The work to identify and access stakeholders and acknowledge their requirement is a difficult task. Most mobile learning initiatives often follow an evolutionary development process where the system is constructed, evaluated, and refined in increments. During this process, the stakeholders and their needs might change, so even if there was an initial understanding, it might not be correct after one or more increments. In this paper we studied three initiatives with a focus on how they dealt with stakeholders during the development process and finds that the three initiatives deal with stakeholders in an on-demand fashion. New groups of stakeholders are considered when needed, and this leads to a development process that is a mix between sequential and evolutionary, which results in inflexible system solutions. In order to improve on this, stakeholders need to be regarded in a more inclusive fashion, where they are considered as part of the entire development process.
