• The prosody of contrastive topics in Southern Swedish
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings FONETIK 2012 : The XXVth Swedish Phonetics Conference, May 30–June 1, 2012. - Gothenburg : Department of Philosophy, Linguistics and Theory of Science, University of Gothenburg. - 9789163709852 ; , s. 1-4
• Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• This paper presents a pilot study on the prosodic marking of a contrastive topic in Southern Swedish. A test sentence was elicited in three experimental conditions: initial focus; final focus; contrastive topic (initial word) plus focus (final word). F0 patterns were analysed in recordings of 10 speakers. A majority of the speakers distinguished clearly between the conditions, but speakers employed different strategies. The most common one involved modifying the range and/or level of the F0 patterns given by the lexical pitch accents. Another frequent strategy involved a rising pitch accent on the initial word, where the lexical pitch accent would normally stipulate a fall. This result was unexpected and indicates that Southern Swedish sentence intonation might be more complex than typically assumed.

• An acoustic analysis of agonistic sounds in wild cheetahs
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings from FONETIK 2012. - Gothenburg : University of Gothenburg. - 9789163709852 ; , s. 37-40
• Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• The cheetah ranks among the more vocal felids, and is above all a prominent purrer. However, the cheetah also produces a wide variety ofother sounds, and this paper takes a closer lookat a category of sounds produced by wildcheetahs, agonistic vocalizations, that can bedivided into moaning, growling, hissing andspitting sounds.

• South Swedish diphthongisation: an articulographic and acoustic study of /u:/ in the Malmöhus dialect
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings from FONETIK 2012. - 9789163709852 ; , s. 85-88
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• We investigated lip and tongue movements of diphthongisation of /uː/ in the Malmöhus dia- lect, which is spoken in the very south of Swe- den. Articulographic and acoustic data of ten native speakers were collected and analysed. Acoustic analysis revealed fairly stable F1 and F3, but a considerable F2 movement through- out the diphthongisation, indicating that /uː/ is realised dynamically. Articulographic results confirmed the acoustic results, showing signifi- cant differences in tongue displacement throughout the diphthong for all speakers, whereas lip displacement differences were sig- nificant for fewer speakers.

• Chinese and Swedish Stops in Contrast
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings FONETIK 2012 The XXV th Swedish Phonetics Conference May 30–June 1, 2012. - 9789163709852 ; 52, s. 77-80
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• This article is a preliminary overview contrasting Chinese (CN) and Swedish (SE) stops. It begins with a general description of the stop systems of these two languages. The contrastive findings suggest that teachers of Chinese as Foreign Language should pay more attention to training VOT perception instead of the usual intense listening exercises of the tones. Finally, future research on contrastive stops between these two languags is discussed.

• Acoustic properties of implosives in Bantu Mpiemo
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings from FONETIK 2012. - 9789163709852 ; , s. 73-76
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• Previous studies on implosives have shown a great diversity in the production of implosives among the languages in the world. In the light of this, this paper seeks to identify the acoustic phonetic properties of a Bantu language, Mpiemo, spoken in the Central African Republic. One of the strong acoustic correlates of implosives is increasing voicing amplitude during occlusion, which contrasts with a decreasing voicing amplitude for voiced plosives. Another acoustic property of implosives is the increased F0 during the occlusion, which continues all the way to the end of the following vowel.

• Manifestation of downstep and intonation in Japanese: comparison of the Tokyo and Kochi dialects
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings from FONETIK 2012. - 9789163709852 ; , s. 5-8
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• This paper examines the manifestation of downstep and intonation in the Tokyo and Kochi dialects of Japanese by using three types of syntactically balanced material - adjective phrases, adverbial phrases, and sentence modifiers. The main conclusion is that Kochi speakers produce a smaller Major Phrase consisting of fewer lexical accents than in the Tokyo dialect, the Major Phrase being defined as the domain of downstep. In addition, the two dialects differ considerably as to the distribution of F0 peaks in downstepping the lexical accents, the distance being greater in the Tokyo dialect. These findings support a prosodic typology of Japanese dialects in which the weight of accent and intonation differ.

• Conversational gaze in light and darkness
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings from FONETIK 2012. - Göteborg : Göteborgs universitet. - 9789163709852 ; , s. 57-60
• Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• The way we use our gaze in face-to-face interaction is an important part of our social behavior. This exploratory study investigates the relationship between mutual gaze and joint silences and overlaps, where speaker changes and backchannels often occur. Seven dyadic conversations between two persons were recorded in a studio. Gaze patterns were annotated in ELAN to find instances of mutual gaze. Part of the study was conducted in total darkness as a way to observe what happens to our gaze-patterns when we cannot see our interlocutor, although the physical face-to-face condition is upheld. The results show a difference in the frequency of mutual gaze in conversation in light and darkness.

• A comparative study of kinematic and acoustic age-related variability in speech
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings from FONETIK 2012. - 9789163709852 ; , s. 61-64
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• In this study, we compared age-related lip mo- vement variability with acoustic variability ac- ross repetitions using Functional Data Analysis (FDA). Lip movement and acoustic data of 15- 20 repetitions of a short Swedish phrase from 50 Swedish speakers were collected. Results showed weak to moderate negative correlations for age and variability in lip movements, phrase duration and sound pressure level, which confirm previous studies of decreasing variability in speech with age. Variability in F0 did not vary with age, and this may be because we tend to vary our intonation in speech both unconciously when we are learning to speak, and conciously as adult speakers. This will be explored further in a follow-up study.

• A phonetic pilot study of vocalisations in three cats
• 2012
• Ingår i: Proceedings from FONETIK 2012. - 9789163709852 ; , s. 45-48
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• 538 vocalisations from three domestic cats were collected and used in a phonetic pilot study in order to test some recording and anal- ysis methods normally used with human speech. Based on auditive analysis, the vocalisations were categorised into five types and analysed for duration and F0. The most common type was a combined murmur and miaow. Similar mean type durations were found in all three cats. Mean, minimum and maximum F0 showed an overall high variability, due to the large number of intonation patterns used in each type. One might speculate that cats signal para- linguistic – perhaps even linguistic – infor- mation by varying their F0. Neither the record- ing techniques nor the analysis tools used here were judged to be optimal for cat vocalisations. Future work includes a larger study of cat vo- calisations, including intonation and formants, with adapted recording and analysis methods.
