  • SUPER VI. A giant molecular halo around a z similar to 2 quasar
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 654
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the discovery of copious molecular gas in the halo of cid_346, a z=2.2 quasar studied as part of the SINFONI survey for Unveiling the Physics and Effect of Radiative feedback (SUPER). New Atacama Compact Array (ACA) CO(3-2) observations detect a much higher flux (by a factor of 14 +/- 5) than measured on kiloparsec scales (r less than or similar to 8 kpc) using previous snapshot Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array data. Such additional CO(3-2) emission traces a structure that extends out to r similar to 200 kpc in projected size, as inferred through direct imaging and confirmed by an analysis of the uv visibilities. This is the most extended molecular circumgalactic medium (CGM) reservoir that has ever been mapped. It shows complex kinematics, with an overall broad line profile (FWHM=1000 km s(-1)) that is skewed towards redshifted velocities up to at least v similar to 1000 km s(-1). Using the optically thin assumption, we estimate a strict lower limit for the total molecular CGM mass observed by ACA of M-mol(CGM) > 10(10) M-circle dot. There is however room for up to M-mol(CGM) similar to 1.7 x 10(12) M-circle dot, once optically thick CO emission with alpha(CO) = 3.6 M-circle dot (K km s(-1) pc(2))(-1) and LCO(3- 2)'/LCO(1-0)' = 0.5 are assumed. Since cid_346 hosts quasar-driven ionised outflows and since there is no evidence of merging companions or an overdensity, we suggest that outflows may have played a crucial rule in seeding metal-enriched, dense gas on halo scales. However, the origin of such an extended molecular CGM remains unclear.

  • Anthracycline-based chemotherapy as primary treatment for intravascular lymphoma
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Annals of Oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1569-8041 .- 0923-7534. ; 15:8, s. 1215-1221
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Optimal therapeutic management of intravascular lymphoma (IVL) lacks precise guidelines. Patients and methods: The clinico-pathological features of 38 HIV-negative patients with IVL were reviewed to define efficacy of chemotherapy in these malignancies. Clinical characteristics of 22 patients treated with chemotherapy and of 16 untreated patients were compared in order to understand better the impact and causes of potential patient selection. Results: Median age was 70 years (range 34-90), with a male/female ratio of 0.9; 23 (61%) patients had Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG-PS) >1;21 (55%) had systemic symptoms. Cutaneous lesions and anemia were significantly more common among patients treated with chemotherapy; central nervous system (CNS) and renal involvement were significantly more common among untreated patients. Chemotherapy was associated with a response rate of 59% and a 3-year overall survival of 33 +/- 11%. Five of six patients with CNS involvement received chemotherapy: four of them died early; only one patient, treated with adriamycin, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, methotrexate, bleomycin and prednisolone (MACOP-B) followed by high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), was alive at 19 months. High-dose chemotherapy supported by ASCT was indicated at diagnosis in another patient (43 years of age, stage 1), who was alive at 71 months, and at relapse after cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisone (CHOP) in two patients who died early after transplantation. PS less than or equal to 1, disease limited to the skin, stage 1, and use of chemotherapy were independently associated with better outcome. Conclusions: Anthracycline-based chemotherapy is the standard treatment for IVL. However, survival is disappointing, with a relevant impact of diagnostic delay and lethal complications. More intensive combinations, containing drugs with higher CNS bioavailability, are needed in cases with brain involvement, and the role of high-dose chemotherapy supported by ASCT should be further investigated in younger patients with unfavorable features.

  • Detection of companion galaxies around hot dust-obscured hyper-luminous galaxy W0410-0913
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723 .- 2041-1723. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The phase transition between galaxies and quasars is often identified with the rare population of hyper-luminous, hot dust-obscured galaxies. Galaxy formation models predict these systems to grow via mergers, that can deliver large amounts of gas toward their centers, induce intense bursts of star formation and feed their supermassive black holes. Here we report the detection of 24 galaxies emitting Lyman-α emission on projected physical scales of about 400 kpc around the hyper-luminous hot dust-obscured galaxy W0410-0913, at redshift z = 3.631, using Very Large Telescope observations. While this indicates that W0410-0913 evolves in a very dense environment, we do not find clear signs of mergers that could sustain its growth. Data suggest that if mergers occurred, as models expect, these would involve less massive satellites, with only a moderate impact on the internal interstellar medium of W0410-0913, which is sustained by a rotationally-supported fast-rotating molecular disk, as Atacama Large Millimeter Array observations suggest.

  • Analysis of a sub-proteome which co-purifies with and is phosphorylated by the Golgi casein kinase
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1420-9071 .- 1420-682X. ; 63:3, s. 378-389
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In an attempt to gain information about the identity of the Golgi apparatus casein kinase(s) (G-CK), responsible for the phosphorylation of caseins in lactating mammary gland, the proteins present in fractions enriched in G-CK activity eluted from DEAE-Sepharose and heparin-Sepharose columns were resolved by two-dimensional electrophoresis and analyzed by mass spectrometry. This led to the identification of 47 proteins altogether, none of which is a bona fide protein kinase. At least 9 of the identified proteins however, are readily phosphorylated by co-purifying G-CK activity, and 7 are physically associated with it to give supramolecular complex(es) of about 500 kDa as judged from Superdex S200 gel fitration and glycerol gradient ultracentrifugation experiments. In contrast, the apparent molecular weight of G-CK estimated from an in gel activity assay after SDSPAGE and renaturation is about 41 kDa. Many of the proteins phosphorylated by and/or associated with G-CK belong to the category of chaperonines, including HSP90, GRP-94 and -78, and various isoforms of protein disulfide isomerases, suggesting a global role of this kinase in the modulation of protein folding.
