  • SEMarbeta: Mobile sketch-gesture-video remote support for car drivers
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450319041 ; , s. 69-76
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Uneven knowledge distribution is often an issue in remote support systems, creating the occasional need for additional information layers that extend beyond plain videoconference and shared workspaces. This paper introduces SEMarbeta, a remote support system designed for car drivers in need of help from an officebound professional expert. We introduce a design concept and its technical implementation using low-cost hardware and techniques inspired by augmented reality research. In this setup, the driver uses a portable Android tablet PC while the expert mechanic uses a stationary computer equipped with a video camera capturing his gestures and sketches. Hence, verbal instructions can be combined with supportive gestures and sketches added by the expert mechanic to the car's video display. To validate this concept, we carried out a user study involving two typical automotive repair tasks: checking engine oil and examining fuses. Based on these tasks and following a between-group (drivers and expert mechanics) design, we compared voice-only with additional sketch- and gesture-overlay on video screenshots measuring objective and perceived quality of help. Results indicate that sketch- and gesture-overlay can benefit remote car support in typical breakdown situations.

  • A Novel Sensor for Bite Force Determinations
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Dental Materials. - 0109-5641 .- 1879-0097. ; 19:2, s. 118-126
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: The clinical usefulness, accuracy and precision of a novel bite force sensor based on force sensing resistors were tested in six subjects wearing maxillary removable partial dentures retained by conical crowns. METHODS: The surfaces of the sensor were manufactured in a silicone material that had mechanical properties similar to those of tough foodstuffs. In two separate series of standardized bite force tests, submaximum force levels were recorded with the sensor and with a strain gaged bite fork. Subjects were assisted in the loading tests with visual feedback instrumentation. Reliability estimates for the bite force sensor were calculated in order to show their reproducibility. Strain gages attached to the prostheses were used to determine the pattern of force distribution during loading tests. The bite force results obtained with the new bite force sensor and with the bite fork were analyzed with ANOVA and Scheffes tests. The strain patterns registered with strain gages were analyzed with F-test. RE-SULTS: The bite force sensor and the bite fork transducer showed no statistically significant differences in respect of intra-individual bite force levels (range 50-300N). The bite forces registered with the new sensor were dependent on the loading position (p<0.05), sex (p<0.05) and test subject (p<0.05). The reliability of the new sensor for sub-maximum bite forces was calculated to be 93%. Strain gage results showed that the new sensor generated strain patterns of less variance (p<0.05) than the bite fork and therefore allowed for higher precision during biting tests. SIGNIFICANCE: The presented instrument has such clinical merits, as to favor its use in experimental clinical studies on the biomechanics of prosthetic appliances.

  • Preoperative sexual function in women with rectal cancer
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Surgical Oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0748-7983. ; 39:10, s. 1079-1086
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Even though sexual dysfunction has been reported after rectal cancer treatment, information on preoperative sexual function is scarce, particularly in female patients. Aims: To describe preoperative sexual function in women with rectal cancer, and to analyse potential sources of bias. Methods: The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) was administered to women with newly diagnosed non-metastatic rectal cancer, irrespective of whether they were sexually active or not. FSFI total and domain scores were calculated for women with complete responses to the corresponding items. Data were compared for those who did and did not complete all the FSFI domains, and for women in the study cohort, and those who were eligible for inclusion but not included. Results: Sexual inactivity was common. Mean FSFI total score was low (16.4 +/- 10.6 SD) among the women who completed all six FSFI domains. The proportion of women who had a partner was higher in this group compared with those who did not complete all the domains (49 of 57 vs 7 of 25, p < 0.001). Eighty-two of the 157 women eligible for inclusion were included. Included women were younger (p = 0.002) and had less co-morbidity than those who were not included (p = 0.025). Conclusions: The low FSFI total score indicates sexual dysfunction. However, the use of FSFI in both women who are and who are not sexually active complicates interpretation of the data and may result in an information bias hampering internal validity. External validity may be limited by selection bias. (c) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
