  • Emergy Assessment of a Wastewater Treatment Pond System in the Lake Victoria Basin
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Accounting and Management. - Carbon, United States : L & H Scientific Publishing, LLC. - 2325-6192 .- 2325-6206. ; 5:1, s. 11-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As part of efforts to reduce the eutrophying load to Lake Victoria, a wastewater treatment system at one of the sugar factories in Kenya was evaluated with the ecosystem ecology method emergy accounting. As a comparison a traditional cost analysis was also performed. The analysis included the local and imported ecosystem services. After preliminary treatment the effluent was discharged into a series of 12 stabilisation ponds. The removal of COD and TSS was high, whereas phosphorus concentrations were reduced by less than 20 %. The monetary costs were dominated by operation and management cost, some of which could probably be reduced by more effective management. The local ecosystem services in emergy terms contributed only 1% (or 1,000 Em$) to the treatment system. Imported ecosystem services in purchased lime contributed more to the treatment system, 22% (or 24,600 Em$). Since the land costs in the area were low, land demanding treatment methods using free local ecosystem services, could be cost effective choices for wastewater management. Ecosystem ecology methods as emergy accountings can guide these choices by revealing the additional contribution of free ecosystem services. Emergy accountings seem to need further clarification regarding differences in micro-/macroeconomic views.

  • Peak CKMB and cTnT accurately estimates myocardial infarct size after reperfusion
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Scand Cardiovasc J.. - : Informa UK Limited. ; 41:1, s. 44-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: To find the time-to-peak for creatine kinase MB(mass) (CKMB) and cardiac troponin T (cTnT) after acute reperfusion, to compare peak and cumulative values to estimate infarct size (IS), and to evaluate clinical routine sampling for assessment of IS. DESIGN: Acute primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) was performed in 38 patients with first-time myocardial infarction. In 21 patients, CKMB and cTnT were acquired before PCI and at 1.5, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, and 48 hours thereafter. In 17 patients, clinical routine samples were acquired at arrival, and at 10 and 20 h. IS was assessed by delayed contrast-enhanced MRI (DE-MRI). RESULTS: Time-to-peak was 7.6+/-3.6 h for CKMB and 8.1+/-3.4 h for cTnT. Peak values correlated strongly to cumulative values (r(s)=0.97-0.98) as well as to DE-MRI (r(s)=0.8-0.82). Clinical routine sampling showed lower rs values (0.47-0.60). CONCLUSIONS: Peak values are likely captured if CKMB and cTnT are acquired at 3, 6, and 12 h after acute PCI. These peak values can be used to estimate myocardial infarct size after acute PCI

  • Combination of reverse and chemical genetic screens reveals angiogenesis inhibitors and targets.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Chemistry & biology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-1301 .- 1074-5521. ; 16:4, s. 432-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We combined reverse and chemical genetics to identify targets and compounds modulating blood vessel development. Through transcript profiling in mice, we identified 150 potentially druggable microvessel-enriched gene products. Orthologs of 50 of these were knocked down in a reverse genetic screen in zebrafish, demonstrating that 16 were necessary for developmental angiogenesis. In parallel, 1280 pharmacologically active compounds were screened in a human cell-based assay, identifying 28 compounds selectively inhibiting endothelial sprouting. Several links were revealed between the results of the reverse and chemical genetic screens, including the serine/threonine (S/T) phosphatases ppp1ca, ppp1cc, and ppp4c and an inhibitor of this gene family; Endothall. Our results suggest that the combination of reverse and chemical genetic screens, in vertebrates, is an efficient strategy for the identification of drug targets and compounds that modulate complex biological systems, such as angiogenesis.

  • A method for assembling a collaborative research team from multiple disciplines and academic centers to study the relationships between ECG estimation and MRI measurement of myocardial infarct size
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electrocardiology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1532-8430 .- 0022-0736. ; 34:4 Suppl 1, s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A method has been developed for establishing a "University Without Walls" for the purpose of studying the relationship between electrocardiographic estimation and magnetic resonance imaging measurements of myocardial infarct size. The research team includes faculty and students from 4 medical centers, with expertise extending from clinical to technical. Weekly interactive videoconferences provide the key research communication method. Study patients are recruited from 2 of the sites, and the correlations between their electrocardiographic and magnetic resonance imaging data are considered by the research team in conference. Outcomes of this program are both scientific publications in international peer-review journals and formal postdoctoral degree attainment by the research trainees.
