  • Decentralized Digital Twins of Circular Value Networks - A Position Paper
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Third International Workshop on Semantic Digital Twins. - : CEUR Workshop Proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Circular economy aims at reducing value loss and avoiding waste, by circulating material or productparts before they become waste. Today, lack of support for sharing data in a secure, quality assured, andautomated way is one of the main obstacles that industry actors point to when attempting to create newcircular value networks. Together with using different terminologies and not having explicit definitions ofthe concepts that appear in data, this makes it very difficult to create new ecosystems of actors in Europetoday. A solution to these challenges needs to leverage open standards for semantic data interoperabilityin establishing a shared vocabulary (ontology network) for data documentation, as well as create adecentralized digital platform that enables collaboration in a secure and confidentiality-preservingmanner. This vocabulary can then be used to construct digital twins of circular value networks to furtherenable open collaboration. Once defined, the blueprints of these digital twins will be reusable as templatesand can be reused with a different set of actors, or used within a different industry domain. This visionincludes a number of open research problems, including the development of ontologies that need to modela wide range of different materials and products, not only providing vertical interoperability but alsohorizontal interoperability, for cross-industry value networks. As well as transdisciplinary research onmethods to find, analyse and assess new circular value chain configurations, and form their decentralizeddigital twins. The solutions will allow for automation of planning, management, and execution of circularvalue networks, at a European scale, and beyond. Thereby supporting the acceleration of the digitaland green transitions, automating the discovery and formation of new collaborations in the circulareconomy.

  • Developing a circular strategies framework for manufacturing companies to support circular economy-oriented innovation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 241
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper puts forward the Circular Strategies Scanner: a framework that introduces a taxonomy of circular strategies developed for use by manufacturing companies engaging in circular economy (CE) oriented innovation. Currently, a range of frameworks exists that propose a vision for how to operate in a CE, by identifying and organising relevant circular strategies. However, these frameworks have a limited applicability for specific business types, in particular manufacturing, and are unsuitable for use in CE oriented innovation, due to a lacking ability to support innovation processes through: 1) creating a comprehensive understanding of circular strategies, 2) mapping strategies currently applied and 3) finding opportunities for improved circularity across a range of business processes. This paper addresses these shortcomings by proposing a circular strategies framework for the manufacturing context, titled the Circular Strategies Scanner, which provides a comprehensive set of definitions of circular strategies and directly supports the early stages of CE oriented innovation. With this, the paper contributes to the body of work that develops CE transition methodology.

  • Lessons, narratives, and research directions for a sustainable circular economy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Industrial Ecology. - : Wiley. - 1088-1980 .- 1530-9290. ; 27:1, s. 6-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The current enthusiasm for the circular economy (CE) offers a unique opportunity to advance the impact of research on sustainability transitions. Diverse interpretations of CE by scholars, however, produce partly opposing assessments of its potential benefits, which can hinder progress. Here, we synthesize policy-relevant lessons and research directions for a sustainable CE and identify three narratives—optimist, reformist, and skeptical—that underpin the ambiguity in CE assessments. Based on 54 key CE scholars’ insights, we identify three research needs: the articulation and discussion of ontologically distinct CE narratives; bridging of technical, managerial, socio-economic, environmental, and political CE perspectives; and critical assessment of opportunities and limits of CE science–policy interactions. Our findings offer practical guidance for scholars to engage reflexively with the rapid expansion of CE knowledge, identify and pursue high-impact research directions, and communicate more effectively with practitioners and policymakers.
