  • A tale of two trees : how children make space in the city
  • 2019. - 1
  • Ingår i: Social, Material and Political Constructs of Arctic Childhoods. - Singapore : Springer. - 9789811331602 - 9789811331619 ; , s. 1-15
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This is a tale of a lilac and a linden tree. It is a tale of how children play with places, and how places play with children. It is a tale about a city that is increasingly hostile towards children’s play, and how children find ways of overcoming the boundaries of their environment. By exploring the relationship to trees it is brought forward how seemingly trivial ‘things’ in everyday life play an important role in how children construct spaces for play, exploration, and calm, as well as find meaning in their everyday life. Through two individual, but also representative, examples of how children relate to trees it is shown how children engage in active relationships with the trees. Through various embodied narratives the children express how the trees are agential rather than passive objects. Through the narratives it is also clear that children actively create physical and mental spaces where they ’fit in’ when the surrounding environment is too restrictive and controlling.

  • 'As the yellow rattle ripens' : Gardening craft as socio-ecological place making
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: FORMakademisk. - : OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University. - 1890-9515. ; 16:4, s. 1-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses on the doing of gardens and explores how amateur gardeners relate to gardening craft in their everyday garden practices. Based on qualitative empirical work, this paper discusses how different craft methods and caring practices are employed as memory work and as a means to connect to, and create, the garden as a socio-ecological place. Based on the gardeners’ narratives, the garden is discussed as a web of self and a place where the meeting between the gardener and the more-than-human are central incentives to gardening. Gardening is an active place-making that goes beyond modifying the materiality of place. Rather, garden craft is narrated as reflecting the gardeners’ underlying relationship to and understanding of plants, soil and animals. It is the means through which gardeners connect in an embodied way to ‘the nature’ of the garden. Garden craft is proposed as an art that is passed on between generations. Gardening craft can be improved by an increased understanding of the temporality of the garden and by developing a sensitivity towards the complex socio-ecological relationships that shape a place. It is concluded that garden craft is understood as central not only to how the garden is constructed as a place but also to how the gardener relates to the garden as affecting, and being affected by, the current environmental crisis.

  • Communicating back : reflections on IBZM as participatory dissemination
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Fennia. - : Fennia - International Journal of Geography. - 1798-5617. ; 199:1, s. 136-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reflects on Interviews-Based-Zine-Making as participatory dissemination as explored by Valli in this issue of Fennia. It discusses three main aspects of the approach. The first aspect relates to IBZM as being dissemination of result or an additional research method. The second focuses on the entanglements between representation and the potential tensions and conflicts that may arise when the workshop participants read interview transcripts from other members of the community. The third aspect focuses on interpretation and how to deal with the thin line between representation of research participants’ understandings of interview transcripts and the researcher’s interpretation and analysis of these.
