    • Future sea level rise as a consequence of global warming will affect the world's coastal regions. Even though the pace of sea level rise is not clear, the consequences will be severe and global. Commonly the effects of future sea level rise are investigated for relatively vulnerable development countries; however, a whole range of varying regions needs to be considered in order to improve the understanding of global consequences. In this paper we investigate consequences of future sea level rise along the coast of the Baltic Sea island of Gotland, Sweden, with the aim to fill knowledge gaps regarding comparatively well-suited areas in developed countries. We study both the quantity of the loss of features of infrastructure, cultural, and natural value in the case of a 2 m sea level rise of the Baltic Sea and the effects of climate change on seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers, which indirectly cause saltwater intrusion in wells. We conduct a multi-criteria risk analysis by using lidar data on land elevation and GIS-vulnerability mapping, which gives the application of distance and elevation parameters formerly unimaginable precision. We find that in case of a 2 m sea level rise, 3 % of the land area of Gotland, corresponding to 99 km(2), will be inundated. The features most strongly affected are items of touristic or nature value, including camping places, shore meadows, sea stack areas, and endangered plants and species habitats. In total, 231 out of 7354 wells will be directly inundated, and the number of wells in the high-risk zone for saltwater intrusion in wells will increase considerably. Some valuable features will be irreversibly lost due to, for example, inundation of sea stacks and the passing of tipping points for seawater intrusion into coastal aquifers; others might simply be moved further inland, but this requires considerable economic means and prioritization. With nature tourism being one of the main income sources of Gotland, monitoring and planning are required to meet the changes. Seeing Gotland in a global perspective, this island shows that holistic multi-feature studies of future consequences of sea level rise are required to identify overall consequences for individual regions.

  • Invasion rate and population characteristics of the round goby Neogobius melanostomus: effects of density and invasion history

    • Round goby Neogobius melanostomus is currently one of the most wide-ranging invasive fish species in Europe and North America. The present study demonstrates how the distribution of round goby has expanded from 2008 to 2013 at a rate of about 30 km yr(-1) along the Danish coastline in the western Baltic Sea. Further analyses showed that fish from an established high-density round goby population were slow-growing and displayed poorer condition (weight at age and hepatosomatic index) compared to fish sampled from recently invaded locations (i.e. at the forefront of the distribution range). The established population revealed a broad age distribution and a 1:1 gender ratio, while fish from a recently invaded site were primarily of intermediate ages with a male-biased gender ratio. Otolith analyses suggested that the oldest individuals from the recently invaded area experienced superior growth conditions only in the most recent years, suggesting immigration into the area as adults. Our results suggest that intraspecific competition for food may cause continued dispersal of the species and that population demographics likely relate to invasion history.

  • Prospects for improved glomerular filtration rate estimation based on creatinine—results from a transnational multicentre study

    • Background The Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) creatinine equation is routinely used to assess renal function but exhibits varying accuracy depending on patient characteristics and clinical presentation. The overall aim of the present study was to assess if and to what extent glomerular filtration rate (GFR) estimation based on creatinine can be improved.MethodsIn a cross-sectional analysis covering the years 2003–17, CKD-EPI was validated against measured GFR (mGFR; using various tracer methods) in patients with high likelihood of chronic kidney disease (CKD; five CKD cohorts, n = 8365) and in patients with low likelihood of CKD (six community cohorts, n = 6759). Comparisons were made with the Lund–Malmö revised equation (LMR) and the Full Age Spectrum equation.Results7In patients aged 18–39 years old, CKD-EPI overestimated GFR with 5.0–16 mL/min/1.73 m2 in median in both cohort types at mGFR levels <120 mL/min/1.73 m2. LMR had greater accuracy than CKD-EPI in the CKD cohorts (P30, the percentage of estimated GFR within 30% of mGFR, 83.5% versus 76.6%). CKD-EPI was generally the most accurate equation in the community cohorts, but all three equations reached P30 above the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative benchmark of 90%.ConclusionsNone of the evaluated equations made optimal use of available data. Prospects for improved GFR estimation procedures based on creatinine exist, particularly in young adults and in settings where patients with suspected or manifest CKD are investigated.

    • BACKGROUND: A new Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology equation without race variable has been recently proposed (CKD-EPIAS). This equation has neither been validated outside USA nor compared to the new European Kidney Function Consortium (EKFC) and Lund-Malmö Revised (LMREV) equations, developed in European cohorts.METHODS: Standardized creatinine and measured glomerular filtration rate (GFR) from the European EKFC cohorts (n = 13 856 including 6031 individuals in the external validation cohort), from France, (n = 4429, including 964 Black Europeans), from Brazil (n = 100), and from Africa (n = 508) were used to test the performances of the equations. A matched analysis between White Europeans and Black Africans or Black Europeans was performed.RESULTS: In White Europeans (n = 9496), both the EKFC and LMREV equations outperformed CKD-EPIAS (bias of -0.6 and -3.2, respectively versus 5.0 mL/min/1.73m², and accuracy within 30% of 86.9 and 87.4, respectively versus 80.9%). In Black Europeans and Black Africans, the best performance was observed with the EKFC equation using a specific Q-value ( = concentration of serum creatinine in healthy males and females). These results were confirmed in matched analyses, which showed that serum creatinine concentrations were different in White Europeans, Black Europeans, and Black Africans for the same measured GFR, age, sex and body mass index. Creatinine differences were more relevant in males.CONCLUSION: In a European and African cohort, the performances of CKD-EPIAS remain suboptimal. The EKFC equation, using usual or dedicated, population-specific Q-values presents the best performance in the whole age range in the European and African populations included in this study.

    • AIM: The Cockcroft-Gault (CG) creatinine-based equation is still used to estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) for drug dosage adjustment. Incorrect eGFR may lead to hazardous over- or underdosing METHODS: In a cross-sectional analysis, CG was validated against measured GFR (mGFR) in 14,804 participants and compared with the Modification-of-Diet-in-Renal-Diseases (MDRD), Chronic-Kidney-Disease-Epidemiology (CKD-EPI), Lund-Malmö-Revised (LMR), and European-Kidney-Function-Consortium (EKFC) equations. Validation focused on bias, imprecision, and accuracy (percentage of estimates within ±30% of mGFR, P30), overall and stratified for mGFR, age, and body mass index at mGFR <60 mL/min, as well as classification in mGFR stages.RESULTS: The CG equation performed worse than the other equations, overall and in mGFR, age and BMI subgroups in terms of bias (systematic overestimation), imprecision and accuracy except for patients ≥65 years where bias and P30 were similar to MDRD and CKD-EPI, but worse than LMR and EKFC. In subjects with mGFR<60 mL/min and at BMI [18.5-25[kg/m2 , all equations performed similarly and for BMI<18.5kg/m2 CG and LMR had the best results though all equations had poor P30-accuracy. At BMI≥25kg/m2 the bias of the CG increased with increasing BMI (+17.2mL/min at BMI≥40kg/m2 ). The four more recent equations also classified mGFR stages better than CG.CONCLUSIONS: The CG equation showed poor ability to estimate GFR overall and in analyses stratified for GFR, age, and BMI. CG was inferior to correctly classify the patients in the mGFR staging compared to more recent creatinine-based equations.

  • Cenozoic landscape evolution in northern Sweden : Geomorphological interpretation within a GIS-framework

    • The large-scale bedrock landscape in northern Sweden has a complex evolution history of planation, uplift, transgression, burial, weathering, and erosion. The aim of this thesis is to examine the long-term development of the area. Terms for base-level surfaces in the area are defined. A combination of GIS-analyses of digital elevation models and field work is used to explore landform characteristics and formation. Inselbergs east of the northern Scandes in northern Sweden are used as a basis for describing landscape development. In total, 794 inselbergs are identified in the study area. The inselbergs are classified according to their degree of glacial erosion. The Parkajoki area, with low glacially modified inselbergs, tors, boulder fields and saprolites, has been shown to have largely escaped Quaternary glacial erosion and is taken as a type area to describe the late-Neogene landscape development prior to glaciation. The removal of Neogene saprolite mantles at the inselberg feet in areas of glacial erosion increased inselberg relief during the Quaternary by 10-20 m. For landscape evolution further back in time, beyond the Neogene, the hypsography of the study areas shows at least two palaeosurface generations in the northern Scandes and at least four palaeosurface generations on the inselberg plains. The distribution of inselbergs in relation to palaeosurface generations in the same elevation intervals suggests land uplift with a tilt towards the SE-ESE. Eocene marine diatom findings at 260 m a.s.l. in Finland, 200 km east of the study area, indicate a pre-Eocene age of the inselberg plains above this elevation. The development of today’s inselberg plains likely started in the late Mesozoic, with a sub-Mesozic etch surface that was subjected to land uplift at the late Mesozoic-Paleocene transition during breakup of the Atlantic. The great antiquity of the northern Swedish bedrock landscape stands as an analogy for shield areas in for example Australia and Africa.

  • DEM-analysis of palaeosurface remnants in the mountain zone of northern Sweden

    • Palaeosurface remnants are parts of old planation surfaces that have been elevated and partly down-cut by subsequent erosion. Such surfaces constitute an important landscape element when reconstructing the evolution of a landscape’s tong term development, although their morphological identification may be uncertain. In this study we examine to which degree palaeosurface remnants and surface generations can be identified objectively by GIS-analyses. A combination of fieldwork and GIS-analysis of digital elevation models (DEMs) was used to investigate palaeosurface remnants in two study areas, Ätnajåkki valley and Tjeuralako plateau in the northern Scandes of Sweden. Our results indicate that surfaces with an inclination of less than 11 °, and that were not affected by glacial erosion, correspond well with palaeosurface remnants as mapped subjectively in the DEM, air photos and in the field. Peaks in the hypsographic curves, at similar elevation intervals for both areas, show the altitudinal distribution of several palaeosurface generations that were identified in the field. The DEM analysis is shown to be a useful tool, but subjective mapping of glacially eroded areas is necessary to exclude glacially eroded areas, some of which may otherwise be misinterpreted as palaeosurface remnants, in the DEM. Hence, the combination of field observations and GIS-analyses is important when mapping and analysing palaeosurface remnants and their distribution correctly in a DEM. The method shown is nonetheless straightforward and reproducible.

  • DEM identification of macroscale stepped relief in arctic northern Sweden

    • Stepped relief is a characteristic feature of many upland areas on Earth. In this study, we examine if stepped relief can be identified objectively by GIS-analysis of digital elevation models (DEMs). We specifically study the stepped relief landscapes of northern Sweden, comprising areas of contrasting topography in the mountainous northern Scandes and on the inselberg plains of the Precambrian basement east of the Caledonides.We mainly use hypsographic curves to examine the elevation distribution of the study areas and to identify palaeosurfaces. Peaks in the hypsographic curves are interpreted as palaeosurfaces, while hypsographic minima are interpreted as breaks in slope, separating these surfaces. In the northern Scandes, where only patchy remnants of palaeosurfaces remain, we use empirical cutoff values of slope angles to restrict palaeosurface areas to those identified in thefield and in air photos. In addition, air photo andfield mapping of glacially eroded areas is necessary to exclude glacially formed low relief surfaces, such as valley floors. These latter procedures introduce an unavoidable degree of subjectivity to the study. Our results indicate that in the northern Scandes, surfaces with an inclination of 11°, after glacially formed features are abstracted, correspond well with palaeosurface remnants. Breaks in slope separating the surface generations in themountains are centred around 860, 1320, and 1520 masl (above sea level), respectively. On the plains east of the northern Scandes, hypsographic data were filtered to remove inselbergs in order to analyse only the plains. Hypsographic curves of both the filtered and the unfiltered data of the inselberg plains show minima at elevations that correspond to steps separating multiple palaeosurfaces at elevations of 190, 250, and 400 masl. The steps separating the different palaeosurfaces are, in places, aligned with known geological discontinuities, but extensive remnants also transect structure. The presence of stepped relief is consistent with existing models of phased Cenozoic uplift and incision in northern Fennoscandia.

  • Factors determining the impact of glacial erosion on shield surfaces

    • The erosional effect of ice sheets on shield bedrock surfaces has been debated for many decades. Whilst there seems to be agreement that ice sheet erosion of the bedrock landforms was generally modest, and that many preglacial landscape elements remain, we need to know which factors influence ice sheet dynamics and erosional impact on the shield. Using GIS-analysis and field observations, combined with cosmogenic exposure ages, we investigate areas with a similar ice cover history but with greatly different degrees of glacial erosional impact. On two transects with an area of ~35 000km2 each across the shield, we examine why glacially eroded areas exist adjacent to areas of negligible glacial erosion.  Firstly, a E-W transect, identifies two areas of exceptional glacial preservation, the Parkajoki area in Sweden and the so-called ice shed zone in Finland, each with large tors and deep saprolite covers. Secondly a NW-SE transect, overlapping in the northern part with the first transect, includes areas of intense glacial streamlining, with bedrock areas stripped of loose material and barely any weathering remnants. For areas of negligible and advanced glacial erosion, we investigate geology, elevation, topography, hydrology and duration of ice cover in an attempt to identify factors leading to ice sheet erosion/preservation of the underlying shield landscape. We estimate the duration of ice cover from the known ice cover history. We use a single flow path and thereby use steady glaciological parameters. Our results point to glacial bedrock erosion of flat shield surfaces in the range of tens of meters. Erosion only happens in areas where the ice is forced to flow around obstacles or into basins. These preglacial landscape properties are in turn determined by bedrock geology and long-term geomorphic and tectonic evolution. Consequently, a combination of bedrock type and topography determines ice sheet properties and thereby effects of ice erosion on shield surfaces.

    • The erosional impacts of former ice sheets on the low-relief bedrock surfaces of Northern Hemisphere shields are not well understood. This paper assesses the variable impacts of glacial erosion on a portion of Baffin Island, eastern Canadian Arctic, between 68 degrees and 72 degrees N and 66 degrees and 80 degrees W. This tilted shield block was covered repeatedly by the Laurentide Ice Sheet during the late Cenozoic. The impact of ice-sheet erosion is examined with GIS analyses using two geomorphic parameters: lake density and terrain ruggedness. The resulting patterns generally conform to published data from other remote sensing studies, geological observations, cosmogenic exposure ages, and the distribution of the chemical index of alteration for tills. Lake density and terrain ruggedness are thereby demonstrated to be useful quantitative indicators of variable ice-sheet erosional impacts across Baffin Island. Ice-sheet erosion was most effective in the lower western parts of the lowlands, in a west-east-oriented band at around 350-400 m a.s.l., and in fjord-onset zones in the uplifted eastern region. Above the 350-400 m a.s.l. band and between the fjord-onset zones, ice-sheet erosion was not sufficient to create extensive ice-roughened or streamlined bedrock surfaces. The exception-where lake density and terrain ruggedness indicate that ice-sheet erosion had a scouring effect all across the study area-was in an area from Foxe Basin to Home Bay with elevations <400 m a.s.l. These morphological contrasts link to former ice-sheet basal thermal regimes during the Pleistocene. The zone of low glacial erosion surrounding the cold-based Barnes Ice Cap probably represents the ice cap's greater extent during successive Pleistocene cold stages. Inter-fjord plateaus with few ice-sheet bedforms remained cold-based throughout multiple Pleistocene glaciations. In contrast, zones of high lake density and high terrain ruggedness are a result of the repeated development of fast-flowing, erosive ice in warm-based zones beneath the Laurentide Ice Sheet. These zones are linked to greater ice thickness over western lowland Baffin Island. However, adjacent lowland surfaces with similar elevations of non-eroded, weakly eroded, and ice-scoured shield bedrock indicate that-even in areas of high lake density and terrain ruggedness-the total depth of ice sheet erosion did not exceed 50 m.
