  • Linking Small-scale Solar Wind Properties with Large-scale Coronal Source Regions through Joint Parker Solar Probe-Metis/Solar Orbiter Observations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : IOP Publishing Ltd. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 935:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The solar wind measured in situ by Parker Solar Probe in the very inner heliosphere is studied in combination with the remote-sensing observation of the coronal source region provided by the METIS coronagraph aboard Solar Orbiter. The coronal outflows observed near the ecliptic by Metis on 2021 January 17 at 16:30 UT, between 3.5 and 6.3 R (circle dot) above the eastern solar limb, can be associated with the streams sampled by PSP at 0.11 and 0.26 au from the Sun, in two time intervals almost 5 days apart. The two plasma flows come from two distinct source regions, characterized by different magnetic field polarity and intensity at the coronal base. It follows that both the global and local properties of the two streams are different. Specifically, the solar wind emanating from the stronger magnetic field region has a lower bulk flux density, as expected, and is in a state of well-developed Alfvenic turbulence, with low intermittency. This is interpreted in terms of slab turbulence in the context of nearly incompressible magnetohydrodynamics. Conversely, the highly intermittent and poorly developed turbulent behavior of the solar wind from the weaker magnetic field region is presumably due to large magnetic deflections most likely attributed to the presence of switchbacks of interchange reconnection origin.

  • Exploring the Solar Wind from Its Source on the Corona into the Inner Heliosphere during the First Solar Orbiter-Parker Solar Probe Quadrature
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 920:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This Letter addresses the first Solar Orbiter (SO)-Parker Solar Probe (PSP) quadrature, occurring on 2021 January 18 to investigate the evolution of solar wind from the extended corona to the inner heliosphere. Assuming ballistic propagation, the same plasma volume observed remotely in the corona at altitudes between 3.5 and 6.3 solar radii above the solar limb with the Metis coronagraph on SO can be tracked to PSP, orbiting at 0.1 au, thus allowing the local properties of the solar wind to be linked to the coronal source region from where it originated. Thanks to the close approach of PSP to the Sun and the simultaneous Metis observation of the solar corona, the flow-aligned magnetic field and the bulk kinetic energy flux density can be empirically inferred along the coronal current sheet with an unprecedented accuracy, allowing in particular estimation of the Alfven radius at 8.7 solar radii during the time of this event. This is thus the very first study of the same solar wind plasma as it expands from the sub-Alfvenic solar corona to just above the Alfven surface.

  • Frailty as a comprehensive health measure beyond seizure control in patients with epilepsy : A cross-sectional study
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Epilepsia. - 0013-9580 .- 1528-1167.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Due to the high clinical heterogeneity of epilepsy, there is a critical need for novel metrics aimed at capturing its biological and phenotypic complexity. Frailty is increasingly recognized in various medical disciplines as a useful construct to understand differences in susceptibility to adverse outcomes. Here, we develop a frailty index (FI) for patients with epilepsy (PwE) and explore its association with demographic and clinical features. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we consecutively enrolled 153 PwE from an outpatient epilepsy clinic. Participants were assessed for various health deficits to calculate the FI. Associations between FI and demographic/clinical features, antiseizure medications (ASMs), and patient-reported outcomes were analyzed using general linear models and Spearman correlation. Results: The median age at the time of study visit was 47 years (interquartile range = 33–60), and 89 (58.2%) patients were females. Multiple linear regression revealed that the developed 33-item FI showed an independent association with age, female sex, higher body mass index, family history of epilepsy, intellectual disability, and the number of ASMs used. A robust analysis of covariance showed higher FI levels in patients using cytochrome P450 3A4-inducer ASMs. We found a moderate positive correlation between FI and psychological distress, lower quality of life, and physical frailty, measured by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory-10, and handgrip strength, respectively. Finally, a weak association was observed between higher FI scores and an increased number of epileptic falls.Significance: This study highlights the significance of frailty as a comprehensive health measure in epilepsy. It suggests that frailty in this specific population is not only a manifestation of aging but is inherently linked to epilepsy and treatment-related factors. Future research is warranted to validate and refine the FI in diverse epilepsy populations and investigate its impact on specific adverse outcomes in longitudinal studies.

  • Does Turbulence along the Coronal Current Sheet Drive Ion Cyclotron Waves?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 944:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Evidence for the presence of ion cyclotron waves (ICWs), driven by turbulence, at the boundaries of the current sheet is reported in this paper. By exploiting the full potential of the joint observations performed by Parker Solar Probe and the Metis coronagraph on board Solar Orbiter, local measurements of the solar wind can be linked with the large-scale structures of the solar corona. The results suggest that the dynamics of the current sheet layers generates turbulence, which in turn creates a sufficiently strong temperature anisotropy to make the solar-wind plasma unstable to anisotropy-driven instabilities such as the Alfven ion cyclotron, mirror-mode, and firehose instabilities. The study of the polarization state of high-frequency magnetic fluctuations reveals that ICWs are indeed present along the current sheet, thus linking the magnetic topology of the remotely imaged coronal source regions with the wave bursts observed in situ. The present results may allow improvement of state-of-the-art models based on the ion cyclotron mechanism, providing new insights into the processes involved in coronal heating.

  • The large enriched germanium experiment for neutrinoless double beta decay (LEGEND)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : Author(s). - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 1894
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) would show that lepton number is violated, reveal that neu-trinos are Majorana particles, and provide information on neutrino mass. A discovery-capable experiment covering the inverted ordering region, with effective Majorana neutrino masses of 15 - 50 meV, will require a tonne-scale experiment with excellent energy resolution and extremely low backgrounds, at the level of ∼0.1 count /(FWHM·t·yr) in the region of the signal. The current generation 76Ge experiments GERDA and the Majorana Demonstrator, utilizing high purity Germanium detectors with an intrinsic energy resolution of 0.12%, have achieved the lowest backgrounds by over an order of magnitude in the 0νββ signal region of all 0νββ experiments. Building on this success, the LEGEND collaboration has been formed to pursue a tonne-scale 76Ge experiment. The collaboration aims to develop a phased 0νββ experimental program with discovery potential at a half-life approaching or at 1028 years, using existing resources as appropriate to expedite physics results.

  • Vibration issues in timber structures : A state-of-the-art review
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Building Engineering. - 2352-7102. ; 76
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increasing use of timber structures worldwide has brought attention to the challenges posed by their lightweight nature, making them more prone to vibrations than more massive structures. Consequently, significant research efforts have been dedicated to understanding and mitigating vibrations in timber structures, while scientific committees strive to establish suitable design regulations. This study aims to classify and identify the main research themes related to timber structure vibrations and highlight future research needs and directions. A bibliometric-based selection process briefly introduces each research topic, presenting the latest findings and proposals for vibration design in timber structures. The paper emphasizes the key outcomes and significant contributions to understanding and addressing vibration issues in timber structures. These findings serve as valuable guidance for researchers, designers, and regulatory bodies involved in designing and assessing timber structures subjected to vibrations.

  • A novel L1CAM isoform with angiogenic activity generated by NOVA2-mediated alternative splicing
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - 2050-084X. ; 8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The biological players involved in angiogenesis are only partially defined. Here, we report that endothelial cells (ECs) express a novel isoform of the cell-surface adhesion molecule L1CAM, termed L1-ΔTM. The splicing factor NOVA2, which binds directly to L1CAM pre-mRNA, is necessary and sufficient for the skipping of L1CAM transmembrane domain in ECs, leading to the release of soluble L1-ΔTM. The latter exerts high angiogenic function through both autocrine and paracrine activities. Mechanistically, L1-ΔTM-induced angiogenesis requires fibroblast growth factor receptor-1 signaling, implying a crosstalk between the two molecules. NOVA2 and L1-ΔTM are overexpressed in the vasculature of ovarian cancer, where L1-ΔTM levels correlate with tumor vascularization, supporting the involvement of NOVA2-mediated L1-ΔTM production in tumor angiogenesis. Finally, high NOVA2 expression is associated with poor outcome in ovarian cancer patients. Our results point to L1-ΔTM as a novel, EC-derived angiogenic factor which may represent a target for innovative antiangiogenic therapies.
