  • Information Systems Research: Making an Impact in a Publish-or-Perish World
  • 2018
  • In: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - : Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 43:1, s. 466-481
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper reports on the panel discussion that took place at the European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS) in Guimarães, Portugal, on 9 June, 2017. The discussion focused on three central questions: 1) “What does research impact mean for you?”, 2) “What is your approach to making an impact with your research?”, and 3) “What advice would you give to PhD students and early-career scholars?”. While the five panelists (Samir Chatterjee, Alan R. Dennis, Shirley Gregor, Magnus Mähring, and Peter Mertens) partly differed in their views on what impactful research is and how to conduct it, they seemed to largely agree that assessing impact requires a multidimensional view, that impactful IS research requires a clear link to real-world problems (“grand challenges”), and that young scholars need to avoid the trap of confusing research gaps with research relevance. With the panel discussion and this report, we hope to initiate a discussion on the essential topic of research impact in the IS discipline and to contribute to the development of a more uniform, yet more diverse, understanding and appreciation of different approaches to making an impact with IS research.

  • Ethics in Information Systems and Design Science Research : Five Perspectives
  • 2022
  • In: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - : Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 50:1, s. 589-616
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • While ethics are recognized as an integral part of information systems (IS) research, many questions about the role of ethics in research practice remain unanswered. Our report responds to this emerging set of concerns with a broad and integrative account of five perspectives on ethics in IS research and design science research (DSR) in particular. Our report is informed by a broad literature review, a panel discussion at DESRIST 2020, and substantial personal experience from wrestling with ethical considerations in the field. The report provides a comprehensive discussion of prevailing perspectives on ethics and the implications for IS research. Together, we hope the report will inspire more ethics-conscious and responsible IS research. © 2022 by the Association for Information Systems.

  • The Generative Mechanisms of Healthcare Digitalization
  • 2014
  • In: Doctoral Consortium of the 35rd International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS, 2014). Auckland, New Zealand, 10-13 December, 2014.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Digitalization is considered as an important strategy to meet the challenges facing healthcare sector. However, the results often fall below expectations. Furthermore, the literature has provided a fragmented understanding as previous studies have generally focused on the advantages and the barriers of the adoption of health care IS. Very little attention has been paid to the generative mechanisms of digitalization i.e. the causal powers that contribute to changes in organization. Given this background, the purpose of this paper is to identify generative mechanisms of digitalization and explain the outcomes. To address these questions a realist social theory underpinned by critical realist lens is applied. As research strategy, case study research was employed and interviews and observation studies were used as data collection techniques. Causal and comparative analyses are employed in order to identify the generative mechanisms of digitalization. This paper adds to digitalization of healthcare literature by focusing on issues that are of primary concern to managers responsible for the introduction of digital technology. It also demonstrate the usefulness of critical realism, for developing substantive contribution in IS research field, and provides an illustration of the morphogenetic approach, to study and explain the relationship between digital materiality and organizations.
