  • Simulating the hydration of cementitious phases with an oscillating rate of reaction
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Cement and Concrete Research. - 0008-8846. ; 29:9, s. 1513-1517
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To investigate how an oscillating reaction rate might influence the hydration of cementitious solids, a simple iterative mathematical model that includes recurrent passivation of the surface has been constructed. The algorithm generates a wide variety of hydration curves with a limited number of input parameters: i.e.. V0 (volume of unreacted solid after initial reaction), a, (degree of reaction upon initial wetting), x0 (fraction of particle surface passivated after initial wetting); running index: n (cycle number, with an arbitrary unit of time per cycle); constants: m (number of cycles with constant x, the relative rate of the hydration and passivation reactions), k (maximum linear rate of reaction front), and lambda (range 0-1, determines the general passivation behaviour, modelled by the algorithm x(new) = 4 lambda xold[1 - xold]). The hydration process is described by the sequence: (1) Delta V = k(1 - x)V^2/3, (2) Vnew = Vold - Delta V, (3) alpha = 1 - (V/V0) + alpha0.

  • The Danish national return-to-work program - aims, content, and design of the process and effect evaluation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment and Health. - : Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment and Health. - 0355-3140 .- 1795-990X. ; 38:2, s. 120-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Danish national return-to-work (RTW) program aims to improve the management of municipal sickness benefit in Denmark. A study is currently ongoing to evaluate the RTW program. The purpose of this article is to describe the study protocol. The program includes 21 municipalities encompassing approximately 19 500 working-age adults on long-term sickness absence, regardless of reason for sickness absence or employment status. It consists of three core elements: (i) establishment of multidisciplinary RTW teams, (ii) introduction of standardized workability assessments and sickness absence management procedures, and (iii) a comprehensive training course for the RTW teams. The effect evaluation is based on a parallel group randomized trial and a stratified cluster-controlled trial and focuses on register-based primary outcomes-duration of sickness absence and RTW and questionnaire-based secondary outcomes such as health and workability. The process evaluation utilizes questionnaires, interviews, and municipal data. The effect evaluation tests whether participants in the intervention have a (i) shorter duration of full-time sickness absence, (ii) longer time until recurrent long-term sickness absence, (iii) faster full RTW, (iv) more positive development in health, workability, pain, and sleep; it also tests whether the program is (v) cost-effective. The process evaluation investigates: (i) whether the expected target population is reached; (ii) if the program is implemented as intended; (iii) how the beneficiaries, the RTW teams, and the external stakeholders experience the program; and (iv) whether contextual factors influenced the implementation. The program has the potential to contribute markedly to lowering human and economic costs and increasing labor force supply. First results will be available in 2013. The trial registrations are ISRCTN43004323, and ISRCTN51445682.

  • High order splitting schemes with complex timesteps and their application in mathematical finance
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0377-0427. ; 262, s. 234-243
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High order splitting schemes with complex timesteps are applied to Kolmogorov backward equations stemming from stochastic differential equations in the Stratonovich form. in the setting of weighted spaces, the necessary analyticity of the split semigroups can easily be proved. A numerical example from interest rate theory, the CIR2 model, is considered. The numerical results are robust for drift-dominated problems and confirm our theoretical results. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. • A variational approach to the sum splitting scheme
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IMA Journal of Numerical Analysis. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0272-4979 .- 1464-3642. ; 42:1, s. 923-950
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nonlinear parabolic equations are frequently encountered in applications and efficient approximating techniques for their solution are of great importance. In order to provide an effective scheme for the temporal approximation of such equations, we present a sum splitting scheme that comes with a straightforward parallelization strategy. The convergence analysis is carried out in a variational framework that allows for a general setting and, in particular, nontrivial temporal coefficients. The aim of this work is to illustrate the significant advantages of a variational framework for operator splittings and to use this to extend semigroup-based theory for this type of scheme.

  • Convergence analysis of domain decomposition based time integrators for degenerate parabolic equations
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Numerische Mathematik. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0029-599X .- 0945-3245. ; 140:4, s. 913-938
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Domain decomposition based time integrators allow the usage of parallel and distributed hardware, making them well-suited for the temporal discretization of parabolic systems. In this study, a rigours convergence analysis is given for such integrators without assuming any restrictive regularity on the solutions or the domains. The analysis is conducted by first deriving a new variational framework for the domain decomposition, which is applicable to the two standard degenerate examples. That is, the p-Laplace and the porous medium type vector fields. Secondly, the decomposed vector fields are restricted to the underlying pivot space and the time integration of the parabolic problem can then be interpreted as an operators splitting applied to a dissipative evolution equation. The convergence results then follow by employing elements of the approximation theory for nonlinear semigroups.

  • Convergence analysis of the nonoverlapping Robin-Robin method for nonlinear elliptic equations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis. - 0036-1429. ; 60:2, s. 585-605
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We prove convergence for the nonoverlapping Robin-Robin method applied to nonlinear elliptic equations with a p-structure, including degenerate diffusion equations governed by the p-Laplacian. This nonoverlapping domain decomposition is commonly encountered when discretizing elliptic equations, as it enables the usage of parallel and distributed hardware. Convergence has been derived in various linear contexts, but little has been proven for nonlinear equations. Hence, we develop a new theory for nonlinear Steklov-Poincaré operators based on the p-structure and the L^p-generalization of the Lions-Magenes spaces. This framework allows the reformulation of the Robin-Robin method into a Peaceman-Rachford splitting on the interfaces of the subdomains, and the convergence analysis then follows by employing elements of the abstract theory for monotone operators. The analysis is performed on Lipschitz domains and without restrictive regularity assumptions on the solutions.

  • Modified Neumann-Neumann methods for semi- and quasilinear elliptic equations
  • 2023
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Neumann--Neumann method is a commonly employed domain decomposition method for linear elliptic equations. However, the method exhibits slow convergence when applied to semilinear equations and does not seem to converge at all for certain quasilinear equations. We therefore propose two modified Neumann--Neumann methods that have better convergence properties and require less computations. We provide numerical results that show the advantages of these methods when applied to both semilinear and quasilinear equations. We also prove linear convergence with mesh-independent error reduction under certain assumptions on the equation. The analysis is carried out on general Lipschitz domains and relies on the theory of nonlinear Steklov--Poincaré operators.

  • Genome-wide association analysis identifies three new susceptibility loci for childhood body mass index.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Human molecular genetics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1460-2083 .- 0964-6906. ; 25:2, s. 389-403
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A large number of genetic loci are associated with adult body mass index. However, the genetics of childhood body mass index are largely unknown. We performed a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies of childhood body mass index, using sex- and age-adjusted standard deviation scores. We included 35 668 children from 20 studies in the discovery phase and 11 873 children from 13 studies in the replication phase. In total, 15 loci reached genome-wide significance (P-value < 5 × 10(-8)) in the joint discovery and replication analysis, of which 12 are previously identified loci in or close to ADCY3, GNPDA2, TMEM18, SEC16B, FAIM2, FTO, TFAP2B, TNNI3K, MC4R, GPR61, LMX1B and OLFM4 associated with adult body mass index or childhood obesity. We identified three novel loci: rs13253111 near ELP3, rs8092503 near RAB27B and rs13387838 near ADAM23. Per additional risk allele, body mass index increased 0.04 Standard Deviation Score (SDS) [Standard Error (SE) 0.007], 0.05 SDS (SE 0.008) and 0.14 SDS (SE 0.025), for rs13253111, rs8092503 and rs13387838, respectively. A genetic risk score combining all 15 SNPs showed that each additional average risk allele was associated with a 0.073 SDS (SE 0.011, P-value = 3.12 × 10(-10)) increase in childhood body mass index in a population of 1955 children. This risk score explained 2% of the variance in childhood body mass index. This study highlights the shared genetic background between childhood and adult body mass index and adds three novel loci. These loci likely represent age-related differences in strength of the associations with body mass index.

  • Mitochondrial dysfunction and calcium dysregulation in leigh syndrome induced pluripotent stem cell derived neurons
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Molecular Sciences. - : MDPI AG. - 1661-6596 .- 1422-0067. ; 21:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Leigh syndrome (LS) is the most frequent infantile mitochondrial disorder (MD) and is characterized by neurodegeneration and astrogliosis in the basal ganglia or the brain stem. At present, there is no cure or treatment for this disease, partly due to scarcity of LS models. Current models generally fail to recapitulate important traits of the disease. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new human in vitro models. Establishment of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) followed by differentiation into neurons is a powerful tool to obtain an in vitro model for LS. Here, we describe the generation and characterization of iPSCs, neural stem cells (NSCs) and iPSC-derived neurons harboring the mtDNA mutation m.13513G>A in heteroplasmy. We have performed mitochondrial characterization, analysis of electrophysiological properties and calcium imaging of LS neurons. Here, we show a clearly compromised oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) function in LS patient neurons. This is also the first report of electrophysiological studies performed on iPSC-derived neurons harboring an mtDNA mutation, which revealed that, in spite of having identical electrical properties, diseased neurons manifested mitochondrial dysfunction together with a diminished calcium buffering capacity. This could lead to an overload of cytoplasmic calcium concentration and the consequent cell death observed in patients. Importantly, our results highlight the importance of calcium homeostasis in LS pathology.

  • A Convergence Analysis of the Peaceman-Rachford Scheme for Semilinear Evolution Equations
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis. - : Society for Industrial & Applied Mathematics (SIAM). - 0036-1429 .- 1095-7170. ; 51:4, s. 1900-1910
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Peaceman--Rachford scheme is a commonly used splitting method for discretizing semilinear evolution equations, where the vector fields are given by the sum of one linear and one nonlinear dissipative operator. Typical examples of such equations are reaction-diffusion systems and the damped wave equation. In this paper we conduct a convergence analysis for the Peaceman--Rachford scheme in the setting of dissipative evolution equations on Hilbert spaces. We do not assume Lipschitz continuity of the nonlinearity, as previously done in the literature. First or second order convergence is derived, depending on the regularity of the solution, and a shortened proof for $o(1)$-convergence is given when only a mild solution exits. The analysis is also extended to the Lie scheme in a Banach space framework. The convergence results are illustrated by numerical experiments for Caginalp's solidification model and the Gray--Scott pattern formation problem.
