  • Column studies aiming at identification of suitable filter materials for pollutant removal from landfill leachate
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environment and Waste Management. - 1478-9876 .- 1478-9868. ; 2:6, s. 506-525
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Landfill leachate contains a complex mixture of inorganic and organic pollutants, which need to be removed before they pollute the environment. Different filter media (peat mixed with either carbon-containing ash, polyurethane waste, or wood pellets) were investigated with respect to their possibility to simultaneously and at low initial concentrations remove metals, polar and non-polar organic compounds. The mixture of peat and carbon-containing ash was found to be the best medium. Reduction in leachate of phenolic substances was 96%, of PBDEs was over 98%, of DOC 40% and of important metals as Cu, Pb and Sn 60%, 90% and 93%, respectively.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Addresses the issue whether computer modelling techniques developed for humid climates are applicable in runoff forecasting in the semi-arid zone. Four different simulation models were applied to a partly urbanized catchment in northern Tunisia. Two of the models used were developed for urban runoff simulation (SWMM and ILLUDAS) and two for typical rural application (HBV and VANMOD). -Authors

  • The effects of storm water on Lake Vaxjosjon
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: Vatten: tidskrift för vattenvård /Journal of Water Management and research. - 0042-2886. ; 45:2, s. 167-173
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to determine the pollution load originating from storm water on Lake Vaxjosjon. Each year about 1,050,000 m3 of storm water are discharged into the lake. Storm water represents a substantial pollution source for the lake and therefore also a main reason for the hypertrophic conditions in the lake. In order to evaluate the effects of the discharged storm water on the ecological conditions in the lake, an investigation was carried out using available information on storm water quality together with complementary sampling and flow measurements. Two different time scales were considered to be important: a short time scale for evaluating effects on the receiving waters due to shock loads of toxic substances (hours and days) and a long time scale for evaluating the effects of nutrients (years). In order to investigate effects concerning the short time scale, a computer-based runoff model was used. For the long time scale a daily precipitation series from 1970 to 1983 was used. The results showed that approximately 37% of the annual load of total phosphorus and 70% of the annual load of total nitrogen originate from storm water. Also a considerable portion of the annual heavy metal load originates from storm water (zink 51%, copper 55%). The annual total phosphorus load on Lake Vaxjosjon is 0.63 g/m2 lake area and year. The storm water part represents a phosphorus load equal to 0.23 g/m2 lake area and year. The acceptable load of phosphorus, for mesotrophic conditions in the lake, is about 0.2 g/m2 lake area and year. In order to improve the water quality in Lake Vaxjosjon sediment dredging of the bottom sediments needs to be undertaken. The sediments consists of an organic rich, phosphorus and nitrogen accumulated, black, anaerobic deposit, causing internal nutrient loading during summer periods.

  • Calculation of mass transport of pollutants via storm water discharge
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: VATTEN. - 0042-2886. ; 42:1, s. 16-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The National Swedish Environmental Protection Board recommends a standard value method for calculation of mass transport of pollutants via storm water sewer systems. In this paper mass transport calculations based on this method are compared with actual measurements. Measurements during one and a half years in the city of Lund show high amounts of leakage and drainage into the storm water sewer system. The paper shows that the pollution transport during base flow conditions is significant.

  • Estimation of combined sewer overflow discharge from the city of Malmo.
  • 1984
  • Ingår i: Nordic Hydrology. - : IWA Publishing. - 0029-1277. ; 15:4-5, s. 333-340
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A study aiming at the estimation of yearly volumes of CSO and yearly quantities of pollution load from CSO had been carried out in the city of Malmo, Sweden. Storm Water Management Model was used both to simulate single CSO events and for continuous simulation. The results from these simulations were compared with actual measurements.-from Authors

  • Physical, chemical and biological processes for optimizing decentralized composting
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Compost Science & Utilization. - 1065-657X. ; 11:4, s. 330-336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • On-site composting of nonpolluted organic wastes avoids costs and energy for transportation since the volume to be transported can be reduced to about 20% of the original. This paper describes the aerobic processes in a small-scale composting reactor, and evaluates how these processes can be optimized. The optimized composting process has a relatively short turnover time for organic matter; at the same time the temperature of about 60degreesC decreases the problems with pathogens and weeds in the mature compost. The compost produced has a high nutritional value, with high concentrations of especially nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, while the contamination by heavy metals and other toxic substances are very low.

  • A cross-national environmental cluster collaboration : Shifting between an analytical and management level of the triple helix
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Science and Public Policy. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0302-3427 .- 1471-5430. ; 42:4, s. 583-593
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The STInno project, which was part of the EU Framework Programme 7 aimed to minimise thedistance between south–north regions in Europe with a specific focus on wastewater treatmentclusters. Three triple helix collaborations from three different countries participated, using theirknowledge to work on a case study of olive mill wastewaters. The objective of this paper was tostudy how the triple helix functioned in practice. Results showed that a management model of thetriple helix is somewhat different from the analytical model. A shift between these two viewsoccurred during the project and the participants had to relate to this, as it had an effect onthe outcomes. Concepts of social capital and trust are used to further elaborate on this byemphasising the importance of the people side of the triple helix and how the original, analyticalmodel can be limiting when used in management practice.
