- The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to develop more understandings concerning children’s influence in preschool. By adopting an immanent approach the study centers on young children’s affective relations with the milieu in preschool.The empirical material was produced through approximately 30 hours of observations by video camera and field notes in a preschool department with children aged one to three years. Focus of the observations has been to follow the children in their everyday lives in preschool.The result shows three forms of influence characterized by four qualities. One quality is that influence is understood as collective. This means that the children’s relations always involves other actors, both human and non-human which produces an understanding of influence as fluent in the relations between different actors. Children’s relations also emerge through active affects with a creative quality to produce difference and alternatives. This produces an understanding of a child-influence. The result shows how the active intensity in child-influence also sometimes involves the pedagogues. Other affects that has emerged between the children and the milieu in preschool are the passive ones. These affects decreases the intensity and are characterized by acting as usual and according to routines. The pedagogues’ responses to the children’s relations are characterized by both a standardized response that points to a territorialization of earlier routines and the recognizable, and an affective attunement which emerge as a quality where the pedagogues’ tune in to the children’s affective relations. The affective attunement becomes a possibility for a togetherness-influence.The study concludes that instead of arranging certain situations where children verbally can express their opinions and take part in decision-making the influence of young children can be based on their bodily and affective relations with the milieu in preschool.

- Teachers’ work has during the last ten years gone through great changes. The effects of postmodern society has made the work more and morecomplex and difficult to handle and understand for those involved as well as outsiders. Researchers are trying to keep up with things. The developmentof knowledge of teachers’ work takes place on different levels, in separate disciplines, from various starting-points and with different foci.To be able to describe, understand and explain the »new« work of teachers in a vigorous way there is need of getting these research initiativestogether. Arenas should be established where interchanges and coordination between researchers could take place. In order to make this happen wehave the intention of building a Swedish (our aim is to expand the network to the Nordic countries after the establishment in Sweden) network ofresearch on teachers’ professional lives.Besides presenting the intention and design of our network we also bring along some examples of research projects in line with the network ideas.

Sustainability ambassadorship : the role of the store manager in development of in-store sustainability communication

- The food industry, in general, and the retail grocery sector, in particular, have gone through an extensive transformation regarding sustainability communication. The retail grocery store is the stage on which in-store sustainability communication is triggered and incentivized. This paper focuses on the role of the store manager and is guided by the purpose to explore what roles and functions a store manager may perform as sustainability ambassador, and in what ways the dynamics between the central and store level may influence how sustainability is reflected and communicated in the retail store. The study draws on a qualitative and interpretative approach. The empirics are based on interviews with retail store managers in three Swedish grocery retailers. Through our empirical investigation, six different actions have been identified that both separately and in combination contribute to the field by giving a more nuanced view of what role and functions a store manager may perform as sustainability ambassador.

ADAMTS-7 is associated with a high-risk plaque phenotype in human atherosclerosis

- Several large-scale genome-wide association studies have identified single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the genomic region of A Disintegrin And Metalloproteinase with ThromboSpondin type 1 repeats (ADAMTS)-7 and associations to coronary artery disease. Experimental studies have provided evidence for a functional role of ADAMTS-7 in both injury-induced vascular neointima formation and development of atherosclerotic lesions. However, whether ADAMTS-7 is associated with a specific plaque phenotype in humans has not been investigated. Carotid plaques (n = 206) from patients with and without cerebrovascular symptoms were analyzed for expression of ADAMTS-7 by immunohistochemistry and correlated to components associated with plaque vulnerability. Plaques from symptomatic patients showed increased levels of ADAMTS-7 compared with lesions from asymptomatic patients. High levels of ADAMTS-7 correlated with high levels of CD68-staining and lipid content, but with low smooth muscle cell and collagen content, which together are characteristics of a vulnerable plaque phenotype. ADAMTS-7 levels above median were associated with increased risk for postoperative cardiovascular events. Our data show that ADAMTS-7 is associated with a vulnerable plaque phenotype in human carotid lesions. These data support previous observations of a potential proatherogenic role of ADAMTS-7.

CD163+ macrophages are associated with a vulnerable plaque phenotype in human carotid plaques

- Macrophages are a functionally heterogeneous group of immune cells abundant in atherosclerotic plaques. Macrophages expressing CD163 are associated with intraplaque hemorrhage and have previously been considered atheroprotective. However, in a recent study CD163-deficient atherosclerotic ApoE−/− mice exhibited smaller and less complex plaques, suggesting a proatherogenic role of CD163. Previous smaller studies on CD163+ macrophages and plaque stability in humans have yielded diverging results. Here we assessed the association of CD163+ cells to plaque vulnerability in a large cohort of human carotid plaques. CD163 protein expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry in 200 human carotid plaques removed by endarterectomy from 103 patients with and 93 patients without cerebrovascular symptoms. Furthermore, CD163 mRNA expression was analyzed in 66 of the plaques. Both protein and mRNA expression of CD163 was higher in plaques from symptomatic patients and in plaques with high vulnerability index. CD163+ macrophages were primarily found in shoulder regions and in the center of the plaques. The present data show that CD163 is associated with increased plaque vulnerability in human carotid plaques, supporting the notion that CD163+ macrophages could contribute to clinical events.
