    • © 2020, Springer Nature B.V. Our society has entered in an era of Anthropocene, in which people and their activities dominate almost all ecosystems on the planet. In the context of growing uncertainties, landscape sustainability science (LSS), as a place-based, use-inspired science, aims to understand and improve the dynamic relationship between ecosystem services and human well-being. In this editorial, we identify the major theoretical foundations of LSS, discuss recent innovations in research methodology to advance LSS, summarize the extension of LSS through landscape design and geo-design, and examine the application of LSS for addressing sustainability challenges across multiple landscapes. We highlight that long-term regional sustainability can only be achieved by integrating context-based sustainability across agricultural, urban, and natural landscapes so as to minimize the regional ecological footprint and make advancement towards achieving the sustainable development goals.

  • Living diatoms integrate polysaccharide-Eu3+ complex for UV downconversion

    • In this work, living diatoms (LDT) were fed Eu3+ -complex-polysaccharide aggregates (EIPA), and the living diatoms integrated-EIPAs (LDT-E) in a completely new UV downconversion biophotonic material. The EIPAs were embedded inside siliceous cell walls of living diatoms. When dried, these diatoms (LDT-Es) are luminescent at 612 nm, due to the Eu3+ - complex. As UV-downconversion material, LDT-E absorbs UV light in the band of 250-400 nm and converts into useful visible light, thus contributing to UV-protection and potentially to photocurrent generation in photovoltaic devices. This downconversion material from living diatom retains the porous characteristics of the diatom siliceous cells, as well as the diatom organic components. Most important is the absence of a chemical process to generate this biomaterial from natural living diatoms, in order to obtain UV protection and downconversion. (C) 2022 The Author(s).   • Full-color enhanced second harmonic generation using rainbow trapping in ultrathin hyperbolic metamaterials

    • Though metamaterials enhance nonlinear light-matter interactions due to their resonant features, these materials typically show a narrow spectral bandwidth. Here, the authors report broadband enhanced second-harmonic generation in patterned multilayer hyperbolic metamaterial arrays. Metasurfaces have provided a promising approach to enhance the nonlinearity at subwavelength scale, but usually suffer from a narrow bandwidth as imposed by sharp resonant features. Here, we counterintuitively report a broadband, enhanced second-harmonic generation, in nanopatterned hyperbolic metamaterials. The nanopatterning allows the direct access of the mode with large momentum, rendering the rainbow light trapping, i.e. slow light in a broad frequency, and thus enhancing the local field intensity for boosted nonlinear light-matter interactions. For a proof-of-concept demonstration, we fabricated a nanostructured Au/ZnO multilayer, and enhanced second harmonic generation can be observed within the visible wavelength range (400-650 nm). The enhancement factor is over 50 within the wavelength range of 470-650 nm, and a maximum conversion efficiency of 1.13x10(-6) is obtained with a pump power of only 8.80 mW. Our results herein offer an effective and robust approach towards the broadband metasurface-based nonlinear devices for various important technologies.

  • Natural Orbitals and Targeted Non-Orthogonal Orbital Sets for Atomic Hyperfine Structure Multiconfiguration Calculations

    • Hyperfine structure constants have many applications, but are often hard to calculate accurately due to large and canceling contributions from different terms of the hyperfine interaction operator, and also from different closed and spherically symmetric core subshells that break up due to electron correlation effects. In multiconfiguration calculations, the wave functions are expanded in terms of configuration state functions (CSFs) built from sets of one-electron orbitals. The orbital sets are typically enlarged within the layer-by-layer approach. The calculations are energy-driven, and orbitals in each new layer of correlation orbitals are spatially localized in regions where the weighted total energy decreases the most, overlapping and breaking up different closed core subshells in an irregular pattern. As a result, hyperfine structure constants, computed as expectation values of the hyperfine operators, often show irregular or oscillating convergence patterns. Large orbital sets, and associated large CSF expansions, are needed to obtain converged values of the hyperfine structure constants. We analyze the situation for the states of the {2s22p3,2s22p23p,2s22p24p} odd and {2s22p23s,2s2p4,2s22p24s,2s22p23d} even configurations in N I, and show that the convergence with respect to the increasing sets of orbitals is radically improved by introducing separately optimized orbital sets targeted for describing the spin- and orbital-polarization effects of the 1s and 2s core subshells that are merged with, and orthogonalized against, the ordinary energy-optimized orbitals. In the layer-by-layer approach, the spectroscopic orbitals are kept frozen from the initial calculation and are not allowed to relax in response to the introduced layers of correlation orbitals. To compensate for this lack of variational freedom, the orbitals are transformed to natural orbitals prior to the final calculation based on single and double substitutions from an increased multireference set. The use of natural orbitals has an important impact on the states of the 2s22p23s configuration, bringing the corresponding hyperfine interaction constants in closer agreement with experiment. Relying on recent progress in methodology, the multiconfiguration calculations are based on configuration state function generators, cutting down the time for spin-angular integration by factors of up to 50, compared to ordinary calculations.

  • The Triassic to Early Jurassic palynological record of the Tarim Basin, China

    • The Tarim Basin, located in northwestern China, is an important oil-bearing region, and the extensive non-marine Mesozoic successions make this a key location for understanding environmental changes through the Triassic and Jurassic. Palynological analyses on samples from Lunnan-1 and Tazhong-1 drill cores from the northern and central part of the Tarim Basin reveal wellpreserved spore–pollen assemblages. Five palynological assemblages, i.e. Tarim Triassic 1 (TT1)–Tarim Triassic 4 (TT4) and Tarim Jurassic 1 (TJ1), spanning the Early Triassic to Early Jurassic were identified based on compositional changes, which are supported by ordination of samples using non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). The Early Triassic assemblages possess abundant bryophytes and Densoisporites spp.-producers, which potentially represent a recovery succession following the end-Permian event. The Late Triassic spore–pollen assemblages are more similar to those of the North China Palynofloral Province compared to the South China Province. Based on our phytogeographic analysis, we propose that the western section of the boundary between the North and South China palynofloras should be placed at the southern margin of the Tarim Basin.

    • Palynological analysis was carried out on Middle to Upper Triassic strata from Tulong, Nyalam County, southern Xizang (Tibet), China. Well-preserved miospore (pollen and spore) assemblages and sparse acritarch occurrences were identified. We recognized four formal and one informal biozones based on stratigraphically important taxa and compositional changes through the succession, in ascending order: the Triplexisporites Interval Zone (Anisian), the Staurosaccites quadrifidus Taxon-range Zone (upper Anisian to lower Norian), the Striatella Interval Zone (lower Norian), the Craterisporites rotundus Taxon-range Zone (middle to upper Norian) and the informal ‘Dictyophyllidites harrisii zone’ (Rhaetian). The zonation was supported by marine fossils (e.g., ammonoids and conodonts), and compositional similarity between the zones was examined using non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS). Correlation with other representative palynological sequences across Gondwana was also conducted. The presence of miospore taxa not previously recovered from the Late Triassic North and South China palynofloral provinces (e.g., Ashmoripollis reducta, Craterisporites rotundus, Enzonalasporites vigens, Minutosaccus crenulatus, Samaropollenites speciosus and Staurosaccites quadrifidus) calls for a new province in southwestern China, i.e., the Southern Xizang Province. It is proposed here that the modern expression of the northern boundary runs along the Yarlung Zangbo Suture, the remnant of the Tethys that separated the Indian Plate (southern Xizang) and the Lhasa Block during the Late Triassic. This new palynofloral province comprises typical elements of the Onslow Microflora, indicating the need for an extension of this microflora in southern Xizang, China.
