    • Purpose: To validate diagnoses of pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in administrative registries. We also estimated the frequency of misclassified PE and DVT events.Patients and methods: A registry search for ICD codes representing PE and DVT was performed between 1985 and 2014 in a large population-based cohort in northern Sweden. An additional search using an extended set of ICD codes was performed to identify misclassified events. Diagnoses were validated manually by reviewing medical records and radiology reports.Results: Searching ICD codes in the National Patient Registry and Cause of Death Registry identified 2,450 participants with a first-time diagnosis of PE or DVT. The positive predictive value (PPV) for a diagnosis of PE or DVT was 80.7% and 59.2%, respectively. For the period of 2009 to 2014, the PPV was higher for PE (85.8%) but lower for DVT (54.1%). Misclassification occurred in 16.4% of DVT events and 1.1% of PE events.Conclusion: Registry-based data on PE, especially in recent years, are of acceptable quality and can be considered for use in registry-based studies. For DVT, we found that data were of low quality in regards to both PPV and misclassification and should not be used without validation.

    • IceCube is a km-scale neutrino observatory under construction at the South Pole with sensors both in the deep ice (InIce) and on the surface (IceTop). The sensors, called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs). detect, digitize and timestamp the signals from optical Cherenkov-radiation photons. The DOM Main Board (MB) data acquisition subsystem is connected to the central DAQ in the IceCube Laboratory (ICL) by a single twisted copper wire-pair and transmits packetized data on demand. Time calibration is maintained throughout the array by regular transmission to the DOMs of precisely timed analog signals, synchronized to a central GPS-disciplined clock. The design goals and consequent features, functional capabilities, and initial performance of the DOM MB, and the operation of a combined array of DOMs as a system, are described here. Experience with the first InIce strings and the IceTop stations indicates that the system design and performance goals have been achieved. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    • BACKGROUND: Urinary bladder cancer is a common malignancy worldwide. Environmental factors and chronic inflammation are correlated with the disease risk. Diagnosis is performed by transurethral resection of the bladder, and patients with muscle invasive disease preferably proceed to radical cystectomy, with or without neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The anti-tumour immune responses, known to be initiated in the tumour and draining lymph nodes, may play a major role in future treatment strategies. Thus, increasing the knowledge of tumour-associated immunological processes is important. Activated CD4+ T cells differentiate into four main separate lineages: Th1, Th2, Th17 and Treg, and they are recognized by their effector molecules IFN-γ, IL-13, IL-17A, and the transcription factor Foxp3, respectively. We have previously demonstrated signature CpG sites predictive for lineage commitment of these four major CD4+ T cell lineages. Here, we investigate the lineage commitment specifically in tumour, lymph nodes and blood and relate them to the disease stage and response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy.RESULTS: Blood, tumour and regional lymph nodes were obtained from patients at time of transurethral resection of the bladder and at radical cystectomy. Tumour-infiltrating CD4+ lymphocytes were significantly hypomethylated in all four investigated lineage loci compared to CD4+ lymphocytes in lymph nodes and blood (lymph nodes vs tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes: IFNG -4229 bp p < 0.0001, IL13 -11 bp p < 0.05, IL17A -122 bp p < 0.01 and FOXP3 -77 bp p > 0.05). Examination of individual lymph nodes displayed different methylation signatures, suggesting possible correlation with future survival. More advanced post-cystectomy tumour stages correlated significantly with increased methylation at the IFNG -4229 bp locus. Patients with complete response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy displayed significant hypomethylation in CD4+ T cells for all four investigated loci, most prominently in IFNG p < 0.0001. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy seemed to result in a relocation of Th1-committed CD4+ T cells from blood, presumably to the tumour, indicated by shifts in the methylation patterns, whereas no such shifts were seen for lineages corresponding to IL13, IL17A and FOXP3.CONCLUSION: Increased lineage commitment in CD4+ T cells, as determined by demethylation in predictive CpG sites, is associated with lower post-cystectomy tumour stage, complete response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy and overall better outcome, suggesting epigenetic profiling of CD4+ T cell lineages as a useful readout for clinical staging.

  • Thin film metal sensors in fusion bonded glass chips for high-pressure microfluidics

    • High-pressure microfluidics offers fast analyses of thermodynamic parameters for compressed process solvents. However, microfluidic platforms handling highly compressible supercritical CO2 are difficult to control, and on-chip sensing would offer added control of the devices. Therefore, there is a need to integrate sensors into highly pressure tolerant glass chips. In this paper, thin film Pt sensors were embedded in shallow etched trenches in a glass wafer that was bonded with another glass wafer having microfluidic channels. The devices having sensors integrated into the flow channels sustained pressures up to 220 bar, typical for the operation of supercritical CO2. No leakage from the devices could be found. Integrated temperature sensors were capable of measuring local decompression cooling effects and integrated calorimetric sensors measured flow velocities over the range 0.5-13.8 mm/s. By this, a better control of high-pressure microfluidic platforms has been achieved.

  • Organic matter delivery to Quaternary sediments of Amundsen Basin, central Arctic Ocean

    • Quaternary marine sediments retrieved from the central Arctic Ocean in a 30 cm long core, were analyzed for paleoenvironmental reconstruction. n-Alkane biomarkers combined with elemental analyses that include X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanning provide complementary information that suggest important influxes of terrigenous derived organic matter (OM) with depth. Changes in the variability of n-alkane-derived and elemental ratios with depth reflect the complexity of the organic carbon cycle in this region. The distributions and abundances of the long-chain n-alkanes reveal a high content of terrigenous derived components and suggest together with mathematical estimations high deliveries of the terrigenous OM in the past. XRF trace metal analyses suggest less-oxygenated bottom waters that may have allowed for better preservation conditions of OM deeper in the core.

  • Effect of Short-term and High-resolution Load Forecasting Errors on Microgrid Operation Costs

    • The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effect of the load forecasting errors to the operation costs of a grid-connected microgrid. To this end, a microgrid energy scheduling optimization model was tested with deterministic and stochastic formulations under two solution approaches i.e., day-ahead and rolling horizon optimization. In total, twelve simulation test cases were designed receiving as input the forecasts provided by one of the three implemented machine learning models: linear regression, artificial neural network with backpropagation, and long short-term memory. Simulation results of the weekly operation of a real residential building (HSB Living Lab) showed no significant differences among the costs of the test cases for a daily mean absolute percentage forecast error of about 12%. These results suggest that operators of similar microgrid systems could use simplifying approaches, such as day-ahead deterministic optimization, and forecasts of similar, non-negligible accuracy without substantially affecting the microgrid's total cost as compared to the ideal case of perfect forecast. Improving the accuracy would mainly reduce the microgrid's peak power cost as shown by its 20.2% increase in comparison to the ideal case.

    • We present the synthesis and characterization of an efficient and low cost solar-driven electrolyzer consisting of Earth-abundant materials. The trimetallic NiFeMo electrocatalyst takes the shape of nanometer-sized flakes anchored to a fully carbon-based current collector comprising a nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube network, which in turn is grown on a carbon fiber paper support. This catalyst electrode contains solely Earth-abundant materials, and the carbon fiber support renders it effective despite a low metal content. Notably, a bifunctional catalyst–electrode pair exhibits a low total overpotential of 450 mV to drive a full water-splitting reaction at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 and a measured hydrogen Faradaic efficiency of ∼100%. We combine the catalyst–electrode pair with solution-processed perovskite solar cells to form a lightweight solar-driven water-splitting device with a high peak solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency of 13.8%.

    • This paper presents research on the need for boundary spanners in organizations that has an offshore insourcing strategy for the IT-function. The research question addressed was: How does an offshore insourcing strategy influence the need for having boundary spanners? Empirical data was collected using a case study in three phases, including semi-structured and structured interview in a multinational company. Boundary spanners is often presented as being of great importance when the IT-function is outsourced. The main conclusion is that boundary spanners that has the capability to communicate over the borders in this kind of organizations is also of high importance. This capability is likewise important in an offshore insourcing case as in the offshore outsourcing case. (C) 2021 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

    • Managing large software projects requires working with a large set of measurements to plan, monitor, and control the projects. The measurements can, and usually are, related to each other which raise an issue of efficiently managing the measurements by identifying, quantifying, and comparing dependencies between measurements within a project or between projects. This paper presents a case study performed at one of the units of Ericsson. The case study was designed to elicit and evaluate viable methods for visualizing dependencies between software measurements from a perspective of project and quality managers. By developing a series of prototypes, and evaluating them in interviews, we get results showing applicability of each visualization method in the context of the studied organization. The prototypes were used to visualize correlation coefficients, distribution dependencies, and project differences. The results show that even simple methods could significantly improve the work of quality managers and make the work with measurements more efficient in the organization.

    • Reactive RF-magnetron sputtering is used to grow Cr0.28Zr0.10O0.61 coatings at 500 degrees C. Coatings are annealed at 750 degrees C, 810 degrees C, and 870 degrees C. The microstructure evolution of the pseudobinary oxide compound is characterized through high resolution state of the art HRSTEM and HREDX-maps, revealing the segregation of Cr and Zr on the nm scale. The as-deposited coating comprises cc-(Cr,Zr)(2)O-3 solid solution with a Zr-rich (Zr,Cr)O-x. amorphous phase. After annealing to 750 degrees C tetragonal ZrO2 nucleates and grows from the amorphous phase. The ZrO2 phase is stabilized in its tetragonal structure at these fairly low annealing temperatures, possibly due to the small grain size (below 30 nm). Correlated with the nucleation and growth of the tetragonal-ZrO2 phase is an increase in hardness, with a maximum hardness after annealing to 750 degrees C, followed by a decrease in hardness upon coarsening, bcc metallic Cr phase formation and loss of oxygen, during annealing to 870 degrees C. The observed phase segregation opens up future design routes for pseudobinary oxides with tunable microstructural and mechanical properties. (C) 2017 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd.
