- The volume moves beyond an exclusively political context to incorporate a variety of social and cultural perspectives, ranging from the experiences of Latvian mapmakers in the Russian Empire, to the participation of Latvians in the Wehrmacht and Red Army during World War II, Latvian national communism, and the development of extremist politics following Latvia’s accession to the European Union. Other chapters address developing trends in the fields of history and political science, including the history of antisemitism, memory, language politics, photography, and political extremism.Based on the book’s temporal span from the nineteenth century to the present, the authors and editors of Defining Latvia understand the construction of Latvian identity as a continuous and interconnected process across significant political and ideological ruptures.

- «Jeg elsker nordmenn!» sa Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler da han for første gang satte foten på norsk jord i januar 1941. Ifølge SS-ideologien var nordmenn etterkommere etter rotfaste odelsbønder og krigerske vikinger. I Norge rant fortsatt det nordisk-germanske blodet nesten helt rent. Befolkningen måtte derfor raskt vinnes for SS-tanken, slik at landet kunne innlemmes i fremtidens storgermanske rike.Opprettelsen av en tysk sivilforvaltning under Reichskommissar Terboven ga SS eksepsjonelt stor makt. Og denne skulle brukes for å realisere Himmlers visjoner. Hovedmålet var å bygge opp et lojalt norsk «statsbeskyttelseskorps» som skulle forandre landet til en SS-stat. Av alle tyske instanser var det Himmlers SS som hadde de mest ambisiøse og langsiktige mål i det okkuperte Norge.Himmlers Norge plasserer nordmenn i sentrum av nazistenes planer for en rasemessig omdanning av Europa. Vervingen av norske Waffen-SS-frivillige, omorganiseringen av politiet, utnyttelsen av Nasjonal Samlings særorganisasjoner, rekrutteringen av bondeungdom som kolonister i øst, massakrene på jøder og annen sivilbefolkning på østfronten, og planene for en «endelig løsning av taterspørsmålet i Norge» blir her knyttet sammen. Alle var elementer i Himmlers forsøk på å skape et Storgermania hvor nordmenn skulle innta en privilegert plass.Himmlers Norge er resultat av et syv år langt regjeringsinitiert forskningsprosjekt i regi av Senter for studier av Holocaust og livssynsminoriteter (HL-senteret) og byggerpå materiale fra arkiver i ni land.

- The appeal of Intermarium on the far right lies in how it can be portrayed as a political third way. This interpretation takes the ideas of the national conservatives further by positing Intermarium as the remaining heartland of the "true Europe", a bulwark not only against Putinist "neo-Bolshevism" encroaching from Moscow, but also against the neoliberal, multicultural, secular and feminist "neo-Bolshevism" emanating from Brussels.

- Present-day Latvia is a multi-ethnic society divided by the traumatic experiences of the twentieth century. It was both a locus of the Holocaust and a society deeply affected by decades of Soviet rule. Today, Latvia’s Jewish community is trying to negotiate its place as a re-emergent historical minority in the space between two dominant ethno-cultural communities, Latvian speakers and Russian speakers. After outlining the expressions of antisemitism in both the Lettophone and Russophone milieus since 1991, this article argues that competing nationalist narratives of threat and ownership of the state best explain antisemitism in contemporary Latvia. The fluctuating influence of the 1941 Rumbula Massacre on popular memory culture is a recurrent point of reference, which illustrates my argument. Recent events suggest a new, more conciliatory, trend where Jews are seen as an integral part of the people of Latvia, rather than as a potential risk to the state and nation.
