  • Transnational mobility of higher education within Asia – Strategies and educational conditions among young people related to gender, ethnicity and class
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: GEA – Gender and Education Association Conference April 11-13, Göteborg. Theme: Gender and Democracy: Gender Research in times of change.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transnational mobility in higher education within Asia – Strategies and educational conditions among young people related to gender, ethnicity and class. This workshop mainly invites to a methodological discussion within an ongoing interdisciplinary project focusing on inter-Asian education mobility – a theme that so far has been given little attention even though access to education has long been the reason for migration and mobility. Many Asian youths travel abroad and study in their neighbouring countries - however, the interest has most often been on the increased numbers of young people from Asian countries who obtain higher education in Western countries. By taking a perspective that situates individuals at the centre this study investigates young people’s strategies, experiences and visions in different Asian contexts. Particular interest is paid to power hierarchies based on class, ethnicity, gender, and religion. Theoretical the project employs the concept of social transnational fields and draws inspiration from cultural, migration, global, and gender studies, as well as postcolonial theory. Six researchers are involved in the project and carry out fieldwork among students who study in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Middle East, Thailand and Turkey and the students come from neighbouring Asian countries. The research group collaborates in the development of theory and methodology. Disciplines represented in the study are Islamic studies, sociology, anthropology and history. The students’/the subjects’ experiences are in the centre of the research and through the use of life stories as its research methodology, the research group approaches transnational mobility in a unique way. Furthermore a so-called soft comparison is used, contrasting the material in order to generate mutual interpretative advantages. The academic importance of the project lies in its theoretical and methodological approach, but also in the empirical data it generates. The overall aim of the project is dealing with the transnational space and values that govern the various study options and strategies – how students regard the “homeland” and “host” country – the importance of gender, ethnicity and how students are affected by mobility as part of the their own social, political and religious context. At the workshop all six researchers in the project will present some preliminary results based on recent field data and discuss what kind of themes and intersecting aspects we are trying to involve when approaching the students in using life stories. Likewise discuss possibilities/difficulties in conducting a multi-sited interdisciplinary study. In addition to the researchers in the project we hope for at least 10-20 persons to participate in the discussion.

  • Adherence to national guidelines for children with asthma at primary health centres in Sweden : potential for improvement
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Primary Care Respiratory Journal. - : Elsevier. - 1471-4418 .- 1475-1534. ; 21:3, s. 276-282
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Although asthma is the most common chronic paediatric disease in Western Europe, the extent of adherence to guidelines for primary care management of paediatric asthma remains unclear. AIMS: To evaluate adherence to national guidelines for primary care management of children with asthma. METHODS: This survey involved 18 primary healthcare centres in Stockholm, Sweden. The medical records of 647 children aged 6 months to 16 years with a diagnosis of asthma, obstructive bronchitis, or cough were selected and scrutinised. 223 children with obstructive bronchitis or cough not fulfilling the evidence-based criteria for asthma were excluded, yielding a total of 424 subjects. Documentation of the most important indicators of quality as stipulated in national guidelines (i.e., tobacco smoke, spirometry, pharmacological treatment, patient education, and demonstration of inhalation technique) was examined. RESULTS: Only 22% (n=49) of the children 6 years of age or older had ever undergone a spirometry test, but the frequency was greater when patients had access to an asthma nurse (p=0.003). Although 58% (n=246) of the total study population were treated with inhaled steroids, documented patient education and demonstration of inhalation technique was present in 14% (n=59). Exposure to tobacco smoke was documented in 14% (n=58). CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals a substantial gap between the actual care provided for paediatric asthma and the recommendations formulated in national guidelines.

  • Asthma during adolescence impairs health-related quality of life
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. - : Elsevier BV. - 2213-2198 .- 2213-2201. ; 4:1, s. 144-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Clinical ImplicationsAsthma during adolescence impairs health-related quality of life, especially if the asthma is uncontrolled. To use questions about health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and markers associated with asthma control in the clinic can identify adolescents with an increased risk for impaired HRQoL.

  • Experiences of Daily Life Among Adolescents With Asthma - A Struggle With Ambivalence
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Nursing. - : Elsevier BV. - 0882-5963 .- 1532-8449. ; 35, s. 23-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: There is limited knowledge about how adolescents with asthma view their disease in daily life and how these views impact on management. The aim of this study was to describe experiences of daily life, with particular focus on thoughts, feelings and management of adolescents with asthma.METHODS: In this qualitative study, data were obtained from 10 interviews with adolescents (aged 16-18 years) with asthma recruited from the Swedish population-based prospective birth cohort, BAMSE. Data were analysed through Systematic Text Condensation.RESULTS: Experiences of daily life among adolescents with asthma were defined in four categories: Insight and understanding; Asthma not the focus of daily life; Being acknowledged and, Being affected by asthma symptoms. The adolescents had developed an insight into and understanding of their disease, but did not want asthma to be the focus of their daily lives. The adolescents wanted their asthma to be acknowledged, but not to the point that they were defined by their asthma. They reported having many asthma symptoms, especially during physical activity, but also described a desire to feel healthy, "normal" and like their peers.CONCLUSIONS: Having asthma in adolescence involves several struggles with ambivalence between adapting socially, feeling healthy and managing one's asthma.IMPLICATIONS IN CLINICAL PRACTICE: The provision of person-centred care may be one way to handle the ambivalence among adolescents with asthma and thereby help them to manage their asthma.

  • Experiences of living with asthma : a focus group study with adolescents and parents of children with asthma
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Asthma. - : Informa Healthcare. - 0277-0903 .- 1532-4303. ; 51:2, s. 185-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The goal for asthma treatment is that every individual, so far as possible, shall live without symptoms and exacerbations. Patients and health care professionals sometimes have different perceptions of what is important for achieving good quality of life. This work aims to describe the experiences among adolescents as well as those of parents with young children living with asthma. Methods: Four focus group interviews were performed, two with parents of young children and two with adolescents. The data were qualitatively analyzed, using Systematic Text Condensation. Result: Three themes relevant to the participants’ experiences of living with asthma were presented; strategies, frustrations and expectations. The adolescents wanted to be like their peers and developed their own strategies for self-management of asthma, which included not always taking medication as prescribed. The parents emphasized frustration regarding not being believed, lack of understanding feelings of loneliness, or anxiety. One identified expectation was that the participants wanted to be met with competence and understanding in asthma care from health care professionals. Another expectation expressed among parents was that teachers in nursery and primary schools should have more knowledge and understanding on how to care for children with asthma. Conclusion: Living with asthma leads to developing personal strategies in self-management of asthma. Moreover both parents and adolescents had expectations of being met by competent and understanding health care professionals. Developing a partnership between patients and health care professionals could be a successful way to improve the care of patients with asthma.

  • Gender Awareness in Islamic Education The Pioneering Case of Indonesia in a Comparison with Pakistan
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Studia Islamika. - 0215-0492. ; 19:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyzes the development of gender awareness in Islamic education in Indonesia and Pakistan in general, and the inclusion of a gender perspective in particular. The current situation in Islamic education is a result of their larger national contexts, not least concerning the factors focused upon in this study – educational reform, intellectual milieu, female student enrollment, political development and women’s rights movement. Methodologically the study is built on a combination of fieldwork and text analysis. Fieldwork has been carried out in Indonesia – Bandung, Banjarmasin, Cirebon, Jakarta, Makassar, Pontianak and Yogyakarta – but not in Pakistan. The concepts of ‘gender order’ and ‘gender regime’, or gender relation, inform the analysis of this article. Indonesia has come a long way in this development, although local variations are considerable. In the front-line we have the gender-mixed institutions for higher Islamic education. Scholars at their respective PSWs engage in research with a gender perspective and results are applied in textbooks, curriculums, and methodological and pedagogical training. Pesantrens have experienced a process of reform where the establishment of madrasas and the involvement of NGOs constitute important features. Pesantren continues to be gender-segregated but patriarchal textbooks on gender roles in Islam have been increasingly questioned. The number of female students, teachers, researchers and administrators has steadily increased in all forms of Islamic education. The development of gender awareness in Islamic education has been facilitated by a more than century long process of educational reform and the growth of a liberal and progressive school of Islamic thought. The latter was unintentionally stimulated by the larger political climate that for many years depoliticized Islam but supported private religion and Islamic education. Additionally, Indonesia’s strong women’s movement became increasingly aware of the impact of religion on women’s rights and many activists incorporated that aspect in their struggle. Pakistan still has a long way to go when it comes to gender awareness in Islamic education. The International Islamic University Islamabad provides an example of reformed higher Islamic education, but like all Islamic education in Pakistan it is gender segregated and gender issues and women’s rights in Islam are not explicitly on their agenda. The traditionalist Deobandi ideology initially dominated madrasas but currently we find a variety of ideological orientations and many have gone through a minor reform concerning methodology and curriculum, although most are still very patriarchal. Many female madrasas have been established and they have an increasing number of students, female teachers and administrators. However, the teaching pursues traditional Islamic values and patriarchal morals, which cements rather than challenges existing gender roles. Al-Huda is a new form of female Islamic school. It was initiated by a woman and is run solely by women, and the education is university like. The Islamic values pursued in teaching are similar to the madrasas, while the curriculum and methodology differ. The Indian sub-continent had a process of educational and intellectual reform at the turn of the twentieth century and modern educational Islamic institutions were established. However, this process has been hampered and the country was not ready to embrace the ideas of later modernist reformist thinkers. Because of the increasing Islamization of politics and law in Pakistan the strong women’s movement has become increasingly aware of the impact of religion, which has caused harsh internal debates among activists of different ideological leaning. Traditionalist ulama and scholars educated in the Middle East have in both countries similarly questioned the Islamic knowledge and legitimacy of reformist scholars, women and men alike, and these opponents have been more influential in Pakistan than in Indonesia. The Indonesian gender regime in Islamic education is no longer fully male dominated, and the patriarchal content in Islamic educational material is occasionally questioned and exchanged. However, in Pakistan women’s impact on the prevailing male dominated gender regime and patriarchal content in Islamic education is at best seminal. Finally, the prevailing patriarchal Islamic gender order/s seem solid in Pakistan, but can be regarded as slightly challenged in Indonesia.

  • Going Far or Staying Close? Transnational Mobility among Southeast Asian Students in Islamic Studies
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: TRaNS: Trans-Regional and -National Studies of Southeast Asia. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 2051-364X .- 2051-3658. ; 4:1, s. 109-129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses eleven Southeast Asian students' transnational mobility in order to obtain higher education at an Islamic university in Jakarta. A life story approach has been used and semi-structured and interviewee-oriented interviews have been carried out in the field, as well as on the internet. The focus is not only on the students' individual experiences, such as educational background, strategies in mobility, prevailing life conditions, educational objectives, and future plans, but also on why they chose international Islamic studies in Jakarta and how they evaluate the education offered there. Gender constitutes an overall empirical and analytical aspect of this article, taking into account the prevailing gender order, or norm, in the students' homelands and families, as well as gender regimes, or relations, in the educational and social environment in Jakarta. These students have mixed backgrounds regarding nationality, class, parents' education, gendered and religious norms, and previous contacts outside of their homelands. All, however, accumulate social capital in the transnational social fields or networks-physical and digital-that they take part in during their time in Jakarta and after they finalised their studies. All the students plan for further studies or a working career, and a majority of the students intend to return-or have already returned-to their home country, while a few prefer a third country. They can be defined as so-called temporarily uprooted locals, with an even spread on a scale from localism to cosmopolitanism in their individual identity formation.
