  • On the Parameter Identifiability and Test Data Informativeness in Finite Element Model Error Localization
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of IMAC XVIII. - San Antonio, TX. ; , s. 1520-1527, s. 1520-1527
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two fundamental questions that arise in finite ele- ment model updating and error localization prob- lems are addressed. These are whether available test data are informative enough with respect to the quantification of possible model errors and whether sufficient identifiability of such errors is at hand for a given test data set. We advocate the use of informativeness and identifiability based indices in a preparatory process to increase the likelihood of a successful error localization. Based on model properties, such informativeness and identifiability indices may be used in the pre-test planning for the determination of frequency, time and spatial resolution to be used in a vibratory test. First, the test data informativeness with respect to model parameters which might be in error is quan- tified. Here a dual assumption is made such that if model parameter perturbations could be detected by data from the planned test, then the test data could be used to detect such perturbations, i.e. the test is informative. A Data Information Richness (DIR) index has been developed to assess the level od Data Informativeness with respect to model parameters. Secondly, the identifiability of the model parame- ters are studied. The dynamic properties of a struc- ture, as recorded by a measurement system, may under certain conditions change similarly by changing one parameter or a set of other parameters. Should that be the case, there is no identifi- ability and before a meaningful error localization may take place, either complementary test data have to be added or a re-parameterization of the model has to be made. To assess the identifiability, identifiability based criteria are further developed, based on earlier work by the authors. A newly developed orthogonality/co-linearity index ocI assist in the re-parameterization of systems with low identifiability. The methods of preparatory error localisation are applied to a six-degree-of-freedom system in a numerical example in which the analytical results of a finite element analysis are taken as substitute for measured data.

  • The impact of temperature on the metabolome and endocrine metabolic signals in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology A. - : Elsevier BV. - 1095-6433 .- 1531-4332. ; 164:1, s. 44-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim was to elucidate the effects of elevated temperature on growth performance, growth- and appetite-regulating hormones and metabolism in Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar. Post-smolts in seawater (average mass 175 g) that had been reared at 12 °C were kept at three temperatures (8, 12 and 18 °C) and sampled after one and three months. After three months, the fish kept in 18 °C had decreased growth rate and condition factor, and elevated plasma levels of growth hormone (GH) and leptin, compared with fish kept at the lower temperatures. Food conversion efficiency was also decreased at 18 °C, while at the same time protein uptake was improved and thus was not a limiting mechanism for growth. Redistribution of energy stores in fish at the highest temperature is evident as a preference of maintaining length growth during times of limited energy availability. NMR-based metabolomics analyses of plasma revealed that several metabolites involved in energy metabolism were negatively affected by temperature in the upper temperature range of Atlantic salmon. Specifically, the high temperature induced a decline of several amino acids (glutamine, tyrosine and phenylalanine) and a shift in lipid metabolism. It appears likely that the decreased food intake at the highest temperature is linked to an anorexigenic function of leptin, but also that the decreased food intake, feed conversion efficiency and condition factor can be linked to changes in GH endocrinology.

  • Utbildningens revolutioner : Till studiet av utbildningshistorisk förändring
  • 2017

  • Enabling Dynamic Capability : Managing and Organizing for Change
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This doctoral thesis is based on a longitudinal single-case study conducted over five years within a product development context at a manufacturing company. In dynamic environments that demand flexibility and adaptability, it is essential to understand how organizations can improve dynamic capabilities to remain viable and competitive during periods of turbulence and change. This challenge is especially central to product development organizations offering customer-specific products as it tends to increase organizational complexity. An excessive focus on internal coordination and control to manage this complexity has led to inertia due to establishment of strict, rigid processes and hierarchical bureaucracies within organizational management and design. This study aims to contribute with new knowledge on how organizations operating in dynamic contexts can develop adaptability to changing needs. Specifically, it seeks to understand how to design and manage organizations to increase their preparedness for and adaptability to change. Investigating the factors and mechanisms that influence an organization's dynamic capability can provide insights into the sources of inertia and support the transition toward a more dynamic structure. The longitudinal study is based on data collected through an initial interview study followed by a questionnaire study, and finally through a concluding interview study. The research has been phenomenon-driven; as the organization’s circumstances have evolved, the focus of the study has shifted accordingly. Emerging from the aggregated results of the longitudinal study, the overall scope of the research is the change process, transitioning from a rigid to a more dynamic organization. Research findings are presented in five appended papers.Analysis from literature studies and the empirical study show that the primary focus on improving performance often centers on internal efficiency. However, within the case company, tension arose between the desire of strict control according to predefined processes and plans and the actual need for flexibility. Dynamic contexts require working processes that facilitate reactive problem-solving, creativity, and flexibility, as well as managers capable of going back and forth between management styles to benefit performance. Successful organizational reconfiguration depends on developing the conditions that enable the firm's dynamic capability in relation to its context. This involves identifying both the microfoundations that generate dynamic capability and the internal and external constraints to change.Considering the external environment is crucial for developing an understanding of how to best organize and manage resources and capabilities, which places demands on managerial capabilities. Managers must possess the skills to monitor the external environment and formulate strategies to respond to changing conditions, as their interpretation of the external environment will influence their decisions, which will subsequently enable or hinder possible actions. The design of organizations will impact the ability to rearrange resources and capabilities. Processes and working procedures must allow for reconfigurations to respond swiftly to changing constraints or opportunities. The use of multiple theoretical perspectives has been imperative in the analysis of the data, and the theoretical contribution extends to exploration of various factors and mechanisms that influence an organization's dynamic capability.

  • The Impact of Stressful Postures on the Physical Workload in Nursing
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Nursing staff have an elevated risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders, in particular in the lower back area. Statistics produced by leading industrial nations show that back problems are the world’s number one work-related health problem, and that healthcare workers suffer from a greater occurrence of such problems than workers in other professions. In this context, many studies have examined manual patient handling activities, which was thought to be the main cause of musculoskeletal disorders of the lower back. But nurses have many other types of work to perform and several reviews have concluded that approaches which only focus on manual patient handling activities do not sufficiently reduce back problems in nursing professions.Other risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders of the lower back discussed in the literature included repeated bending and the high proportion of static trunk postures. The main aim of this doctoral thesis was therefore to examine the influence of stressful trunk postures on the physical workload of nursing staff in hospitals and nursing homes. It focuses on the type, number and extent of stressful postures and on identifying activities that encourage their occurrence. We used our findings to derive strategies for reducing stressful postures in nursing, and examined whether nursing staff regard such a reduction as actually relieving their physical workload.A secondary aim was to consider the older people potentially in need of care. The background to this is that, due to steadily rising costs, many older people are unable to afford care in a nursing home, and additionally that the forecast severe shortage of nursing staff in future gives reason to look for solutions that can reduce the demand for nursing staff. Among older people who still look after themselves, we therefore examined which stressful postures they adopt when carrying out domestic tasks such as cooking and washing laundry. From the results, we provided some examples of a better design of the domestic environment, which reduces stressful postures, when performing these tasks and helps older people to be able to look after themselves in their own homes for longer.

  • A metabolomics approach to elucidate effects of food deprivation in juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory Integrative and Comparative Physiology. - : American Physiological Society. - 0363-6119 .- 1522-1490. ; 299:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to evaluate whether NMR-based metabolomics is a suitable method to generate an integrated view on metabolic processes during food deprivation in salmonid fish. Juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) weighing 43-115 g were either fed ad libitum or deprived of food for 28 days at 10 degrees C to investigate catabolic effects on energy reserves and metabolite patterns. The NMR analysis of plasma, liver, and muscle extracts revealed significant fasting-induced changes in the metabolome. Altered plasma lipoprotein levels and tissue-specific patterns of fatty acid mobilization were the most prominent responses, emphasizing the role of lipids as the primary energy source during fasting. In plasma, very-low-density lipoprotein levels increased in food-deprived fish compared with fed fish, whereas levels of high-density lipoprotein decreased. Signs of muscle protein catabolism were also observed as changes in the alanine dynamics. The results further suggest that mechanisms to preserve liver glycogen are present in the food-deprived fish. This study thus demonstrates the utility of NMR-based metabolomics of tissue extracts and plasma to describe the integrated metabolic status of fish.
