  • Bridging the gender gap in entrepreneurship through NGO’s : A study of a Quadruple Helix innovation system project in the Baltic Sea region
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A gender gap in entrepreneurship and innovation can be discerned across Europe – often portrayed as a statistical pattern showing differences in prevalence of entrepreneurial and innovative activities between the categories of men and women. The gender gap can be traced back to the general perceptions of gender in society, where entrepreneurial venturing and innovation work are culturally defined as masculine activities. A situation in which dominating policy models for regional entrepreneurship and innovation – such as the Triple Helix model – sustain the gender gap by being blind to gender issues imply both practical and theoretical challenges for critical management research. In this paper, we intend to analyse the gendered norms and consequences of dominating innovation models, such as the Triple Helix, and to identify roles and challenges of NGO’s in the alternative conceptualization of Quadruple Helix.Based on an exploratory case study of an EU-financed project intentionally set up as a Quadruple Helix innovation system, we find that NGOs may fill four roles in bridging the gender gap: (1) collaborative platforms for women-led SMEs, (2) legitimating and linking women-led SMEs to governmental and academic actors, (3) developing competences and process innovations related to entrepreneurial venturing outside traditional Triple Helix constellations, and (4) carrying individual and societal aspects of entrepreneuring

    • In most developed economies there exist a clear gap between men and women in terms of prevalence of entrepreneurial activity. The gender gap can be traced back to the general perceptions of gender in society, where entrepreneurial venturing is culturally defined as a masculine activity. In this paper, we analyse how such gendered norms are brought into Triple Helix innovation system models, and identify roles and challenges of NGOs in the alternative conceptualization of Quadruple Helix. Based on an exploratory case study of a Quadruple Helix innovation system project in the tourism industry, we find that NGOs may fill four roles in bridging the gender gap: (1) collaborative platforms for women-led SMEs, (2) legitimating and linking women-led SMEs to governmental and academic actors, (3) developing competences and process innovations related to entrepreneurial venturing outside traditional Triple Helix constellations and (4) carrying individual and societal aspects of entrepreneuring.

  • Is cartilage sGAG content related to early changes in cartilage disease? Implications for interpretation of dGEMRIC.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Osteoarthritis and Cartilage. - : Elsevier BV. - 1063-4584. ; 20:5, s. 396-404
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: This study investigates sulphated glycosaminoglycans (sGAG) content changes in early osteoarthritis (OA), and whether contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of cartilage in vitro may identify early event of OA pathology. METHOD: Osteochondral plugs from patients with hip OA or femoral neck fracture (reference group) were collected and analysed by 1.5 T MRI with ΔR1 as a measure of cartilage contrast concentration. Cartilage hydration, contents of sGAG, cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP), hydroxyproline, denatured collagen, and aggrecan TEGE(392) neoepitope were determined and histological grading was performed. RESULTS: sGAG content correlated to ΔR1, although no difference in either of these parameters was detectable between OA and reference cartilage at 4 h of contrast equilibration. In contrast, biochemical analysis of other cartilage matrix constituents showed distinct alterations typical for early cartilage degradation in OA cartilage and with clear evidence for increased aggrecan turnover. CONCLUSION: In the present in vitro study, cartilage sGAG content could not distinguish between early OA cartilage and reference cartilage. Given, that delayed gadolinium enhanced MRI of cartilage (dGEMRIC) indicates early events in the pathogenesis of OA in vivo, our results from the in vitro studies imply other, additional factors than cartilage sGAG content, e.g., alterations in diffusion or increased supply of contrast agent in the diseased joint. Alternatively, an altered dGEMRIC reflects later stages of OA, when sGAG content decreases. Further investigations are warranted, to understand variations in sGAG content in pathology, an essential background for interpreting dGEMRIC measurements.

  • Randomised clinical trial and meta-analysis: mesalazine treatment in irritable bowel syndrome-Effects on gastrointestinal symptoms and rectal biomarkers of immune activity
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics. - : Wiley. - 0269-2813 .- 1365-2036. ; 56:6, s. 968-979
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Low-grade immune activation in the gut is a potential treatment target in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Aims To determine improvement in IBS symptoms after mesalazine treatment, and the utility of measures of immune activity in the rectal mucosa Methods This was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-arm, multicentre trial in subjects with IBS (Rome III criteria), with an eight-week treatment period of mesalazine 2400 mg or plcebo once-daily. The primary endpoint was the global assessment of satisfactory relief of IBS symptoms in >= 50% of weeks during intervention. IBS symptoms were also measured with the IBS severity scoring system; immune activity was measured by mucosal patch technology. A post hoc meta-analysis of randomised placebo-controlled trials of mesalazine in IBS was added. Results Of 181 included patients, 91 received mesalazine and 90 received placebo. The primary endpoint was met by 32 (36%) patients after mesalazine and 27 (30%) after placebo (p = 0.40). There were no differences in response rates related to IBS subtype or post-infection symptom onset. More reduction of abdominal bloating was noted in the mesalazine group (p = 0.02). The meta-analysis showed no effect of mesalazine on IBS symptoms. No mucosal patch technology measure could predict response to mesalazine, and found no differences in the effects of intervention on levels of immune markers. Conclusions Mesalazine is ineffective in reducing IBS symptoms. Rectal measures of immune activity by the mucosal patch technology cannot predict a higher chance of response to mesalazine.
