  • On the Effect of Historical SST Patterns on Radiative Feedback

    • We investigate the dependence of radiative feedback on the pattern of sea-surface temperature (SST) change in 14 Atmospheric General Circulation Models (AGCMs) forced with observed variations in SST and sea-ice over the historical record from 1871 to near-present. We find that over 1871–1980, the Earth warmed with feedbacks largely consistent and strongly correlated with long-term climate sensitivity feedbacks (diagnosed from corresponding atmosphere-ocean GCM abrupt-4xCO2 simulations). Post 1980, however, the Earth warmed with unusual trends in tropical Pacific SSTs (enhanced warming in the west, cooling in the east) and cooling in the Southern Ocean that drove climate feedback to be uncorrelated with—and indicating much lower climate sensitivity than—that expected for long-term CO2 increase. We show that these conclusions are not strongly dependent on the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) II SST data set used to force the AGCMs, though the magnitude of feedback post 1980 is generally smaller in nine AGCMs forced with alternative HadISST1 SST boundary conditions. We quantify a “pattern effect” (defined as the difference between historical and long-term CO2 feedback) equal to 0.48 ± 0.47 [5%–95%] W m−2 K−1 for the time-period 1871–2010 when the AGCMs are forced with HadISST1 SSTs, or 0.70 ± 0.47 [5%–95%] W m−2 K−1 when forced with AMIP II SSTs. Assessed changes in the Earth's historical energy budget agree with the AGCM feedback estimates. Furthermore satellite observations of changes in top-of-atmosphere radiative fluxes since 1985 suggest that the pattern effect was particularly strong over recent decades but may be waning post 2014.

  • Consensus-based technical recommendations for clinical translation of renal BOLD MRI

    • Harmonization of acquisition and analysis protocols is an important step in the validation of BOLD MRI as a renal biomarker. This harmonization initiative provides technical recommendations based on a consensus report with the aim to move towards standardized protocols that facilitate clinical translation and comparison of data across sites. We used a recently published systematic review paper, which included a detailed summary of renal BOLD MRI technical parameters and areas of investigation in its supplementary material, as the starting point in developing the survey questionnaires for seeking consensus. Survey data were collected via the Delphi consensus process from 24 researchers on renal BOLD MRI exam preparation, data acquisition, data analysis, and interpretation. Consensus was defined as >= 75% unanimity in response. Among 31 survey questions, 14 achieved consensus resolution, 12 showed clear respondent preference (65-74% agreement), and 5 showed equal (50/50%) split in opinion among respondents. Recommendations for subject preparation, data acquisition, processing and reporting are given based on the survey results and review of the literature. These technical recommendations are aimed towards increased inter-site harmonization, a first step towards standardization of renal BOLD MRI protocols across sites. We expect this to be an iterative process updated dynamically based on progress in the field.

    • Product-service system (PSS) solution selection is of great significance to better meet the personalised needs of customers and ensure the subsequent implementation. The problems of incomplete index system, difficulty to obtain the value of the qualitative index and unreasonable single index weighting have a significant impact on the decision-making of PSS solution selection. In response to these problems, a decision-making framework of PSS solution selection is constructed. A comprehensive index system is established from the perspectives of multiple stakeholders. Expert evaluating with the fuzzy number and multi-expert evaluation opinion combination is adopted for index value solving. Integration of objective and subjective weights is achieved based on the multi-weight information consistency model and the candidate PSS solutions are ranked by technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution finally. An application case of automobile PSS solution selection is given to verify the effectiveness and rationality of the constructed decision-making framework.

    • As a major challenge and opportunity for traditional manufacturing, intelligent manufacturing is facing the needs of sustainable development in future. Sustainability assessment undoubtedly plays a pivotal role for future development of intelligent manufacturing. Aiming at this, the paper presents the digital twin driven information architecture of sustainability assessment oriented for dynamic evolution under the whole life cycle based on the classic digital twin mapping system. The sustainability assessment method segment of the architecture includes indicator system building, indicator value determination, indicator importance degree determination and intelligent manufacturing project assessing. A novel approach for treating the ambiguity of expert judgment in indicator value determination by introducing trapezoidal fuzzy number into analytic hierarchy process is proposed, while the complexity of the influence relationship among the indicators is processed by the integration of complex networks modeling and PROMETHEE II for the indicator importance degree determination. A two-stage evidence combination model based on evidence theory is built for intelligent manufacturing project assessing lastly. The presented digital-twin-driven information architecture and the sustainability assessment method is tested and validated on a study of sustainability assessment of 8 intelligent manufacturing projects of an air conditioning enterprise. The results of the presented method were validated by comparing them with the results of the fuzzy and rough extension of the PROMETHEE II, TOPSIS and VIKOR methods, indicator importance degree determining method by entropy and indicator value determining method by accurate expert scoring.

  • Multimodal integration of diffusion MRI for better characterization of tissue biology

    • The contrast in diffusion-weighted MR images is due to variations of diffusion properties within the examined specimen. Certain microstructural information on the underlying tissues can be inferred through quantitative analyses of the diffusion-sensitized MR signals. In the first part of the paper, we review two types of approach for characterizing diffusion MRI signals: Blochs equations with diffusion terms, and statistical descriptions. Specifically, we discuss expansions in terms of cumulants and orthogonal basis functions, the confinement tensor formalism and tensor distribution models. Further insights into the tissue properties may be obtained by integrating diffusion MRI with other techniques, which is the subject of the second part of the paper. We review examples involving magnetic susceptibility, structural tensors, internal field gradients, transverse relaxation and functional MRI. Integrating information provided by other imaging modalities (MR based or otherwise) could be a key to improve our understanding of how diffusion MRI relates to physiology and biology.

  • The Dominant Role of Brewer-Dobson Circulation on 17O-Excess Variations in Snow Pits at Dome A, Antarctica

    • Recent studies have suggested that water isotopologues in snow pits from remote East Antarctica can be influenced by the input of stratospheric water, which has anomalously high 17O-excess values. However, it remains unclear whether the 17O-excess records preserved in snow and ice from this region can be used to reconstruct stratosphere-troposphere exchange (STE). In this study, we present high-resolution 17O-excess records from two snow pits at Dome A, the highest point of the Antarctic ice sheet. The 17O-excess records show a significant positive correlation with the strength of the Brewer-Dobson circulation (BDC), the hemispheric-scale troposphere-stratosphere overturn circulation. Stronger BDC leads to more stratospheric water input over Antarctica and higher 17O-excess, and vice versa. In addition, the 17O-excess records also have a significant positive correlation with the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) index, because SAM modulates Antarctic precipitation, which has a dilution effect on the stratospheric water input. The 17O-excess records do not show significant correlations with local temperature and relative humidity in the moisture source region. These results suggest the dominant effect of BDC on 17O-excess and indicate the potential for using 17O-excess records in ice cores from remote sites in East Antarctica for reconstructing long-term variations of STE, and understanding their mechanisms and climate effects.

    • Throughout much of human history, the vast majority of people lived in small communities. However, in the last few centuries, and particularly in recent decades, there has been a dramatic shift. A massive migration has moved populations from rural to urban areas. United Nations reports state that over 4.3 billion individuals now inhabit urban regions, which accounts for more than half (55% as of 2017) of the global population. In most high-income nations, including Western Europe, the Americas, Australia, Japan, and the Middle East, over 80% of people live in urban areas. This figure ranges from 50% to 80% in upper-middle-income countries like Eastern Europe, East Asia, North Africa, South Africa, and South America (United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division, 2019). The urban population is anticipated to rise across all countries in the coming decades, albeit at different rates. By 2050, the global population is expected to reach approximately 9.8 billion, with about 6.7 billion residing in cities and 3.1 billion in rural areas. Despite this rapid urbanization, only around 1% of the Earth's land is allocated for urban and infrastructure development. While urbanization has spurred socio-economic growth, it has also led to significant challenges such as traffic congestion and air pollution. In China, the swift growth of cities has notably expanded urban areas and extended the commuting times of residents. The “2022 Commuting Monitoring Report of Major Chinese Cities” reveals that in 2022, over 14 million people in 44 major Chinese cities experienced extreme commuting, with upwards of 13% spending over an hour in transit (Baidu Maps, 2023). Beijing recorded the highest rate, where 26% of commuters faced this issue.
