  • Measurement of prompt J/psi and beauty hadron production cross sections at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479. ; :11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ALICE experiment at the LHC has studied J/psi production at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV through its electron pair decay on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity L-int = 5.6 nb(-1). The fraction of J/psi from the decay of long-lived beauty hadrons was determined for J/psi candidates with transverse momentum p(t) > 1,3 GeV/c and rapidity vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9. The cross section for prompt J/psi mesons, i.e. directly produced J/psi and prompt decays of heavier charmonium states such as the psi(2S) and chi(c) resonances, is sigma(prompt J/psi) (p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c, vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9) = 8.3 +/- 0.8(stat.) +/- 1.1 (syst.)(-1.4)(+1.5) (syst. pol.) mu b. The cross section for the production of b-hadrons decaying to J/psi with p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c and vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9 is a sigma(J/psi <- hB) (p(t) > 1.3 GeV/c, vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.9) = 1.46 +/- 0.38 (stat.)(-0.32)(+0.26) (syst.) mu b. The results are compared to QCD model predictions. The shape of the p(t) and y distributions of b-quarks predicted by perturbative QCD model calculations are used to extrapolate the measured cross section to derive the b (b) over bar pair total cross section and d sigma/dy at mid-rapidity.

  • Underlying Event measurements in pp collisions at root s=0.9 and 7 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the LHC
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479. ; :7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present measurements of Underlying Event observables in pp collisions at root s = 0 : 9 and 7 TeV. The analysis is performed as a function of the highest charged-particle transverse momentum p(T),L-T in the event. Different regions are defined with respect to the azimuthal direction of the leading (highest transverse momentum) track: Toward, Transverse and Away. The Toward and Away regions collect the fragmentation products of the hardest partonic interaction. The Transverse region is expected to be most sensitive to the Underlying Event activity. The study is performed with charged particles above three different p(T) thresholds: 0.15, 0.5 and 1.0 GeV/c. In the Transverse region we observe an increase in the multiplicity of a factor 2-3 between the lower and higher collision energies, depending on the track p(T) threshold considered. Data are compared to PYTHIA 6.4, PYTHIA 8.1 and PHOJET. On average, all models considered underestimate the multiplicity and summed p(T) in the Transverse region by about 10-30%.

  • Evolution of Non-Terrestrial Networks from 5G to 6G : A Survey
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1553-877X. ; 24:4, s. 2633-2672
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) traditionally have certain limited applications. However, the recent technological advancements and manufacturing cost reduction opened up myriad applications of NTNs for 5G and beyond networks, especially when integrated into terrestrial networks (TNs). This article comprehensively surveys the evolution of NTNs highlighting their relevance to 5G networks and essentially, how it will play a pivotal role in the development of 6G ecosystem. We discuss important features of NTNs integration into TNs and the synergies by delving into the new range of services and use cases, various architectures, technological enablers, and higher layer aspects pertinent to NTNs integration. Moreover, we review the corresponding challenges arising from the technical peculiarities and the new approaches being adopted to develop efficient integrated ground-air-space (GAS) networks. Our survey further includes the major progress and outcomes from academic research as well as industrial efforts representing the main industrial trends, field trials, and prototyping towards the 6G networks.

  • Global consortium for the classification of fungi and fungus-like taxa
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: MYCOSPHERE. - : Mushroom Research Foundation. - 2077-7000 .- 2077-7019. ; 14:1, s. 1960-2012
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Global Consortium for the Classification of Fungi and fungus-like taxa is an international initiative of more than 550 mycologists to develop an electronic structure for the classification of these organisms. The members of the Consortium originate from 55 countries/regions worldwide, from a wide range of disciplines, and include senior, mid-career and early-career mycologists and plant pathologists. The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists. Notes on all newly published taxa at or above the level of species will be prepared and published online on the Outline of Fungi website (https://www.outlineoffungi.org/), and these will be finally published in the biannual edition of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa. Comments on recent important taxonomic opinions on controversial topics will be included in the biannual outline. For example, 'to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation', or 'are there too many genera in the Boletales?' and even more importantly, 'what should be done with the tremendously diverse 'dark fungal taxa?' There are undeniable differences in mycologists' perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. Given the pluralistic nature of fungal taxonomy and its implications for species concepts and the nature of species, this consortium aims to provide a platform to better refine and stabilise fungal classification, taking into consideration views from different parties. In the future, a confidential voting system will be set up to gauge the opinions of all mycologists in the Consortium on important topics. The results of such surveys will be presented to the International Commission on the Taxonomy of Fungi (ICTF) and the Nomenclature Committee for Fungi (NCF) with opinions and percentages of votes for and against. Criticisms based on scientific evidence with regards to nomenclature, classifications, and taxonomic concepts will be welcomed, and any recommendations on specific taxonomic issues will also be encouraged; however, we will encourage professionally and ethically responsible criticisms of others' work. This biannual ongoing project will provide an outlet for advances in various topics of fungal classification, nomenclature, and taxonomic concepts and lead to a community-agreed classification scheme for the fungi and fungus-like taxa. Interested parties should contact the lead author if they would like to be involved in future outlines.

  • Neutralizing Antibodies Inhibit Chikungunya Virus Budding at the Plasma Membrane
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Cell Host and Microbe. - : Cell Press. - 1931-3128 .- 1934-6069. ; 24:3, s. 417-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) are traditionally thought to inhibit virus infection by preventing virion entry into target cells. In addition, antibodies can engage Fc receptors (FcRs) on immune cells to activate antiviral responses. We describe a mechanism by which NAbs inhibit chikungunya virus (CHIKV), the most common alphavirus infecting humans, by preventing virus budding from infected human cells and activating IgG-specific Fc gamma receptors. NAbs bind to CHIKV glycoproteins on the infected cell surface and induce glycoprotein coalescence, preventing budding of nascent virions and leaving structurally heterogeneous nucleocapsids arrested in the cytosol. Furthermore, NAbs induce clustering of CHIKV replication spherules at sites of budding blockage. Functionally, these densely packed glycoprotein-NAb complexes on infected cells activate Fc gamma receptors, inducing a strong, antibody-dependent, cell-mediated cytotoxicity response from immune effector cells. Our findings describe a triply functional antiviral pathway for NAbs that might be broadly applicable across virus-host systems, suggesting avenues for therapeutic innovation through antibody design.

  • Effect of solution annealing temperature on the localised corrosion behaviour of a modified super austenitic steel produced in an open-air atmosphere
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Materials Chemistry and Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0254-0584 .- 1879-3312. ; 299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two annealing heat treatments were investigated regarding localised corrosion behaviour on Nb and Mn-bearing super austenitic stainless steel. The material was designed based on physical metallurgical principles supported by Thermo-Calc modelling and was produced in an open-air atmosphere based on pre-sorted SS scrap plus ferroalloys elements. The production method aims for metal waste valorisation considering small foundries without an atmosphere-controlled process. Secondary phases at annealing temperatures were experimentally analysed by different microstructural characterisation methods and correlated by the Thermo-Calc modelling. In addition, electrochemical techniques and SKPFM were used to study the relationship between observed phases and localised corrosion performance. As the main results, a good correlation was observed between Thermo-Calc calculations and the microstructural characterisation. In particular, M23C6 carbides, sigma phase, and Nb-MX were identified for the sample treated at 1120 degrees C, while for the sample treated at 1180 degrees C, sigma phase and Nb-MX were identified, no M23C6 were detected. As regards localised corrosion behaviour, the M23C6 carbides and a phase for sample 1120 degrees C generated Cr and Mo depletion zones and diminished the corrosion resistance in corrosive aqueous solutions. In the case of sample 1180 degrees C, the a-phase with a smaller size and volume fraction than sample 1120 degrees C was observed, leading to a more uniform Cr and Mo distribution through the microstructure, obtaining high corrosion resistance and showing promising corrosion behaviour, similar to commercial SS 254smo considering its production in open-air.

  • Analysis of Carrier Transport in Tunnel-Junction Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers by a Coupled Nonequilibrium Green's Function-Drift-Diffusion Approach
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - 2331-7019. ; 14:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work investigates carrier transport in tunnel junctions for vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). The study is performed with a quantum-corrected semiclassical approach, where tunneling is described rigorously with a nonequilibrium Green's function formalism based on a multiband description of the electronic structure. Validated with experimental results, the proposed approach provides a quantum -kinetic perspective of the tunneling process and paves the way toward a comprehensive theory of VCSELs, bridging the gap between semiclassical and quantum simulations.

  • Modeling Tunnel Junctions for VCSELs: A Self-Consistent NEGF-DD Approach
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Conference on Numerical Simulation of Optoelectronic Devices, NUSOD. - 2158-3234. ; 2020-September, s. 67-68
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work we investigate carrier transport in tunnel junctions for vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers by a novel self-consistent simulation framework for semiconductor quantum devices. Based on a Poisson-drift-diffusion foundation, in this approach quantum features are described through a nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. The simulator is validated through a comparison with experimental results.
