  • Iron isotope pathways in the boreal landscape : Role of the riparian zone
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. - : Elsevier. - 0016-7037 .- 1872-9533 .- 0046-564X. ; 239, s. 49-60
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stable Fe isotope compositions have been measured in water samples of the subarctic Kalix River, a first-order stream, and soil water samples from a riparian soil profile adjacent to the first-order stream (Northern Sweden). In the first-order stream, dominated by forest, both the particulate (>0.22 µm) and dissolved (<0.22 µm) phase showed negative δ56Fe values (relative to IRMM-014) during base flow and meltwater discharge in May (−0.97 to −0.09‰). The Fe isotope composition in the water from the riparian soil profile varied between −0.20 and +0.91‰ with sharp gradients near the groundwater table. A linear correlation between the δ56Fe values and the TOC/Febulk ratio was measured during snowmelt in the unfiltered river waters (δ56Fe from −0.02 to +0.54‰), suggesting mixing of two Fe components. Two groups of Fe aggregates, with different Fe isotope compositions, are formed in the boreal landscape. We propose that carbon-rich aggregates, Fe(II)(III)-OC, have negative δ56Fe values and Fe-oxyhydroxides have positive δ56Fe values. A mixture of these two components can explain temporal variations of the Fe isotope composition in the Kalix River. This study suggests that stable Fe isotopes can be used as a tool to track and characterize suspended Fe-organic carbon aggregates during transport from the soil, via first-order streams and rivers, to coastal sediment. Furthermore, the differences in Fe isotope values in the Kalix River and the first-order stream during base flow conditions suggest that the primary Fe sources for river water change throughout the year. This model is combining the Fe isotope composition of first-order streams and rivers to weathering and transport processes in the riparian soil.

  • One-step synthesis of sub 5 nm sized manganese oxide based nanoparticles
  • 2013
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sub 5 nm sized manganese oxide nanoparticles; MnOx (1 ≤ x ≤ 2), were synthesized via a short time room temperature synthesis route. The nanoparticles are crystalline, spherically shaped and in the size range of 2-4 nm as shown by transmission electron microscopy studies. Selected area electron diffraction patterns were collected and their appearance indicated that the nanoparticle cores are composed of MnO. Also, co-existence of the (II) and (III) oxidation states at the nanoparticle surface was verified by results achieved from infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These measurements also supported presence of a minor amount of acetate groups as well as a negligible fraction of carbonate groups at the nanoparticle surfaces. The interpretation of the IR spectra was confirmed by quantum chemical calculations using the high spin manganese nanoparticle Mn12O12(OAc)16(H2O)4, as a model system for the MnOx nanoparticle surface. Bulk MnO and Mn2O3 are known to be antiferromagnetic. The magnetic properties are however somewhat dependent of the crystallite size and changes when scaling down to the nanoregion. The MnOx (1 ≤ x ≤ 2) nanoparticles investigated in this work show a superparamagnetic behavior with a blocking temperature of approximately 12 K proven by means of SQUID measurements. The relaxivities of the nanoparticles and the Mn(OAc)2 precursors were studied with a bench top NMR analyzer verifying nanoparticle r1 and r2 of 0.5 and 6 mMs-1 respectively. The r1 relaxivity is lower than what is earlier reported for Gd based contrast agent, but improvements are expected by further surface modification, due to increased rotational time and higher water dispersability.

  • Growth of Gd2O3 nanoparticles inside mesoporous silica frameworks
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Microporous and Mesoporous Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 1387-1811 .- 1873-3093. ; 168, s. 221-224
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) nanoparticles with very small size and narrow size distribution were synthesized by infiltration of Gd(NO3)(3)center dot 6H(2)O as an oxide precursor into the pores of SBA-15 mesoporous silica using a wet-impregnation technique. High resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction show that during the hydrothermal treatment of the precursor at 550 degrees C, gadolinium oxide nanoparticles inside the silica pores are formed. Subsequent dissolution of the silica framework in aqueous NaOH resulted in well dispersed nanoparticles with an average diameter of 3.6 +/- 0.9 nm. If GdCl3 center dot 6H(2)O is used as precursor, GdOCl is formed instead of Gd2O3. The Gd2O3 nanoparticles showed a weak antiferromagnetic behavior, as expected.

  • Distribution of Fe isotopes in particles and colloids in the salinity gradient along the Lena River plume, Laptev Sea
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Biogeosciences. - : European Geosciences Union (EGU). - 1726-4170 .- 1726-4189. ; 16:6, s. 1305-1319
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Riverine Fe input is the primary Fe source for the ocean. This study is focused on the distribution of Fe along the Lena River freshwater plume in the Laptev Sea using samples from a 600 km long transect in front of the Lena River mouth. Separation of the particulate ( >  0.22 μm), colloidal (0.22 μm–1 kDa), and truly dissolved (<  1 kDa) fractions of Fe was carried out. The total Fe concentrations ranged from 0.2 to 57μM with Fe dominantly as particulate Fe. The loss of >  99% of particulate Fe and about 90% of the colloidal Fe was observed across the shelf, while the truly dissolved phase was almost constant across the Laptev Sea. Thus, the truly dissolved Fe could be an important source of bioavailable Fe for plankton in the central Arctic Ocean, together with the colloidal Fe. Fe-isotope analysis showed that the particulate phase and the sediment below the Lena River freshwater plume had negative δ56Fe values (relative to IRMM-14). The colloidal Fe phase showed negative δ56Fe values close to the river mouth (about -0.20 ‰) and positive δ56Fe values in the outermost stations (about +0.10 ‰). We suggest that the shelf zone acts as a sink for Fe particles and colloids with negative δ56Fe values, representing chemically reactive ferrihydrites. The positive δ56Fe values of the colloidal phase within the outer Lena River freshwater plume might represent Fe oxyhydroxides, which remain in the water column, and will be the predominant δ56Fe composition in the Arctic Ocean.

  • Magnetic and Electron Spin Relaxation Properties of (GdxY1-x)(2)O-3 (0 <= x <= 1) Nanoparticles Synthesized by the Combustion Method. Increased Electron Spin Relaxation Times with Increasing Yttrium Content
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 115:13, s. 5469-5477
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The performance of a magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent (CA) depends on several factors, including the relaxation times of the unpaired electrons in the CA. The electron spin relaxation time may be a key factor for the performance of new CAs, such as nanosized Gd2O3 particles. The aim of this work is, therefore, to study changes in the magnetic susceptibility and the electron spin relaxation time of paramagnetic Gd2O3 nanoparticles diluted with increasing amounts of diamagnetic Y2O3. Nanoparticles of (GdxY1-x)(2)O-3 (0 <= x <= 1) were prepared by the combustion method and thoroughly characterized (by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetry coupled with mass spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility measurements). Changes in the electron spin relaxation time were estimated by observations of the signal line width in electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and it was found that the line width was dependent on the concentration of yttrium, indicating that diamagnetic Y2O3 may increase the electron spin relaxation time of Gd2O3 nanoparticles.

  • Difficult cannulation as defined by a prospective study of the Scandinavian Association for Digestive Endoscopy (SADE) in 907 ERCPs
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-7708 .- 0036-5521. ; 49:6, s. 752-758
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background. The definition of a "difficult" cannulation varies considerably in reports of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Aims. To define a difficult cannulation, which translates into higher risk of post-ERCP pancreatitis. Patients and methods. Prospective consecutive recording of 907 cannulations in Scandinavian centers done by experienced endoscopists. Inclusion: indication for biliary access in patients with intact papilla. Exclusion: acute non-biliary and chronic pancreatitis at time of procedure. Results. The primary cannulation succeeded in 74.9%, with median values for time 0.88 min (53 s), with two attempts and with zero pancreatic passages or injections. The overall cannulation success was 97.4% and post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP) rate was 5.3%. The median time for all successful cannulations was 1.55 min (range 0.02-94.2). If the primary cannulation succeeded, the pancreatitis rate was 2.8%; after secondary methods, it rose to 11.5%. Procedures lasting less than 5 min had a PEP rate of 2.6% versus 11.8% in those lasting longer. With one attempt, the PEP rate was 0.6%, with two 3.1%, with three to four 6.1%, and with five and more 11.9%. With one accidental pancreatic guide-wire passage, the risk of the PEP was 3.7%, and with two passages, it was 13.1%. Conclusions. If the increasing rate of PEP is taken as defining factor, the wire-guided cannulation of a native papilla can be considered difficult after 5 min, five attempts, and two pancreatic guide-wire passages when any of those limits is exceeded.

  • Fractionation of iron isotopes during estuarine mixing in Ob, Yenisey and Lena freshwater plumes
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. - 0016-7037 .- 1872-9533. ; 73:13, Suppl. S, s. A569-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Iron isotopes were measured in suspended matter (>0.2 µm) in the Ob, Yenisey and Lena River freshwater plumes during the International Siberian Shelf Study 2008 (ISSS-08). The δ56Fe value was around zero within the Lena River and close to the river mouth, but changed to more negative values in the outer parts of the plume. In both the Ob and Yenisey plumes suspended matter in the surface water had clearly negative values whereas samples close to the bottom showed values close to zero.It has previously been suggested that total Fe in river suspended matter (>0.2µm) in boreal regions is roughly a mixture of three phases, detrital particles (δ56Fe around zero), oxyhydroxide particles (δ56Fe positive) and C-Fe particles (δ56Fe negative). We suggest that the δ56Fe pattern observed in this study is the result of relatively rapid removal of detrital particles and Fe-oxyhydroxides, leaving a suspended fraction with negative values in the surface water in the outer parts of the freshwater plumes. Hence, during estuarine mixing of suspended particles heavy iron isotopes are deposited close to the river mouth, whereas light isotopes are exported to open ocean water.

  • How to cannulate? A survey of the Scandinavian Association for Digestive Endoscopy (SADE) in 141 endoscopists
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1502-7708 .- 0036-5521. ; 47:7, s. 861-869
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cannulation of the papilla vateri represents an enigmatic first step in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography (ERCP). In light of falling numbers of (diagnostic) ERCP and novel techniques, e. g. short-wire system, we were interested in the approach novice and experienced endoscopist are taking; especially, what makes a papilla difficult to cannulate and how to approach this. We devised a structured online questionnaire, sent to all endoscopists registered with SADE, the Scandinavian Association for Digestive Endoscopy. A total of 141 responded. Of those, 49 were experienced ERCP-endoscopists (>900 ERCPs). The first choice of cannulation is with a sphincterotome and a preinserted wire. Both less experienced and more experienced endoscopists agreed on the criteria to describe a papilla difficult to cannulate and both would choose the needle-knife sphincterotomy (NKS) to get access to the bile duct. The less experienced used more "upward" NKS, whereas the more experienced also used the "downward" NKS technique. This survey provides us with a database allowing now for a more differentiated view on cannulation techniques, success, and outcome in terms of pancreatitis.
