    • The pine weevil is one of the most important pest insects of conifer reforestation areas in Europe. Female pine weevils cover their eggs with chewed bark and feces (frass) resulting in avoidance behavior of feeding conspecifics towards egg laying sites. It has been suggested that microorganisms present in the frass may be responsible for producing deterrent compounds for the pine weevil. The fungi Ophiostoma canum, O. pluriannulatum, and yeast Debaryomyces hansenii were isolated from aseptically collected pine-weevil frass. The isolated fungi were cultured on weevil frass broth and their volatiles were collected by SPME and identified by GC MS. D. hansenii produced methyl salicylate (MeS) as a major compound, whereas, in addition, O. canum and O. pluriannulatum produced 6-protoilludene. In a multi-choice lab bioassay, MeS strongly reduced pine weevil's attraction to the Pinus sylvestris volatiles. Thus, a fungal metabolite was found that strongly affects the pine weevil host-odor search. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and The British Mycological Society. All rights reserved.

  • Array-based genomic screening at diagnosis and during follow-up in chronic lymphocytic leukemia

    • Background High-resolution genomic microarrays enable simultaneous detection of copy-number aberrations such as the known recurrent aberrations in chronic lymphocytic leukemia [del(11q), del(13q), del(17p) and trisomy 12], and copy-number neutral loss of heterozygosity. Moreover, comparison of genomic profiles from sequential patients' samples allows detection of clonal evolution. Design and Methods We screened samples from 369 patients with newly diagnosed chronic lymphocytic leukemia from a population-based cohort using 250K single nucleotide polymorphism-arrays. Clonal evolution was evaluated in 59 follow-up samples obtained after 5-9 years. Results At diagnosis, copy-number aberrations were identified in 90% of patients; 70% carried known recurrent alterations, including del(13q) (55%), trisomy 12 (10.5%), del(11q) (10%), and del(17p) (4%). Additional recurrent aberrations were detected on chromosomes 2 (1.9%), 4 (1.4%), 8 (1.6%) and 14 (1.6%). Thirteen patients (3.5%) displayed recurrent copy-number neutral loss of heterozygosity on 13q, of whom 11 had concurrent homozygous del(13q). Genomic complexity and large 13q deletions correlated with inferior outcome, while the former was linked to poor-prognostic aberrations. In the follow-up study, clonal evolution developed in 8/24 (33%) patients with unmutated IGHV, and in 4/25 (16%) IGHV-mutated and treated patients. In contrast, untreated patients with mutated IGHV (n=10) did not acquire additional aberrations. The most common secondary event, del(13q), was detected in 6/12 (50%) of all patients with acquired alterations. Interestingly, aberrations on, for example, chromosome 6q, 8p, 9p and 10q developed exclusively in patients with unmutated IGHV. Conclusions Whole-genome screening revealed a high frequency of genomic aberrations in newly diagnosed chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Clonal evolution was associated with other markers of aggressive disease and commonly included the known recurrent aberrations.

    • Land development, land remediation and infrastructure projects deal with large quantities of contaminated soil masses. Only a small part of the masses is recycled after treatment and a large part is deposited. At the same time, large quantities of new soil and rock materials must be quarried for construction work. An increased recycling of contaminated masses that is environmentally sound and safe from a human health perspective would make an important contribution to the improved resource management that characterizes a circular economy. This would lead to reduced transports, reduced volumes of deposited waste and a more sustainable management of contaminated masses. The project has analyzed various instruments in society with a view to examining the obstacles and opportunities for increased recycling of contaminated soil masses. The socio-economic benefits to society with an increased recovery of contaminated soil masses have been described in general terms. A method has been developed to provide different actors with a tool for classifying the suitability of soil masses for environmentally- and health-safe reuse. Such a method provides greater competitiveness of entrepreneurs with the ability and knowledge to carry out such recycling. The overall conclusion of this work is that there are significant potential socio-economic benefits from an increased recovery of contaminated soil masses. Several possible measures have been identified that could be useful to lead to an increase in the recovery of contaminated soil slabs in society: • Better adaptation of the environmental quality requirements of soil masses to the actual land use of the area where recycled masses can be potentially used • Reduced administration for using recycled masses • Increase the allowed storage time before disposal • Increase the requirements for treatment of masses before disposal • Introduce taxes on masses that are possible to pre-treat before disposal • Introduce landfill tax and increase landfill fees for inert soil masses • Increased on-site treatment (in situ and ex situ) • Introduce more innovative procurement and choice between execution or turnkey contracting • Calculate key figures for the recycling of contaminated soil masses • Develop and apply a standardized and well-founded classification of different the environmental and technological potential of masses for recycling. A proposed method has been developed and described in this study. Recycling of soil masses thus requires consideration of a variety of factors. The focus of the classification methodology developed here is on the environmental and technical characteristics of the soil mass. However, as described above, for the soil mass to be recycled also conditions other than the environmental and technical characteristics of the masses need to be fulfilled. We therefore propose that the classification of soil masses be seen as part of a step-by-step process in which different actors in society must act in order for increased recycling to be possible. We propose that the step-by-step process of circular management of contaminated masses, as well as for other types of waste, should, as far as possible, be based on the so-called “waste hierarchy”. In order to promote an increased degree of recycling, some efforts have been proposed that different actors can implement within the different levels of the waste hierarchy. It has not been possible to carry out a full analysis of opportunities for the various actors, but the proposals should be seen as a basis for a further development.

    • In this paper we present a quality of service (QoS) adaptive framework for dynamic reconfiguration of component-based realtime systems. Our framework is light-weighted enabling reconfiguration in resource constrained embedded environments. Furthermore, it is possible to reconfigure both components and aspects of a system, hence, enabling finer timing of a real-time system. Real-time QoS guarantees are maintained in the system and under reconfiguration by employing feedback-based scheduling methods.
