    • A native interfacial doping layer introduced in core-shell type ZnO nanowires by a simple vapor phase re-growth procedure endows the produced nanowires with both excellent electrical and optical performances compared to conventional homogeneous ZnO nanowires. The unique Zn-rich interfacial structure in the core-shell nanowires plays a crucial role in the outstanding performances.

  • Fabrication of Graphene Nanomesh and Improved Chemical Enhancement for Raman Spectroscopy

    • We propose a new approach to fabricate the graphene nanomesh through the local catalytic hydrogenation of carbon by Cu nanoparticles. It allows to tune the size and density of the holes in the nanomesh as well as the total edge length of the holes through the control of the thickness of the Cu film. The upshift of both G and 2D peaks in Raman spectra of the graphene nanomeshes indicates that the nanomesh is spontaneously p-type doped. Moreover, the split of G peak reveals that the doping is localized near the edge region of the hole in the nanomesh. Importantly, the nanomesh shows improved chemical enhancement for Raman spectra of absorbed RhB molecules as compared to the graphene. The edges in the nanomesh can enhance Raman spectroscopy via increasing both the local charge transfer and the ability to absorb RhB molecules. The results show that the graphene nanomesh has a great potential for the rapid and sensitive detection for the environmental monitoring and food security.

  • Characterization of Large Structural Genetic Mosaicism in Human Autosomes

    • Analyses of genome-wide association study (GWAS) data have revealed that detectable genetic mosaicism involving large (>2 Mb) structural autosomal alterations occurs in a fraction of individuals. We present results for a set of 24,849 genotyped individuals (total GWAS set II [TGSII]) in whom 341 large autosomal abnormalities were observed in 168 (0.68%) individuals. Merging data from the new TGSII set with data from two prior reports (the Gene-Environment Association Studies and the total GWAS set I) generated a large dataset of 127,179 individuals; we then conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the patterns of detectable autosomal mosaicism (n = 1,315 events in 925 [0.73%] individuals). Restricting to events >2 Mb in size, we observed an increase in event frequency as event size decreased. The combined results underscore that the rate of detectable mosaicism increases with age (p value = 5.5 x 3 10(-31)) and is higher in men (p value = 0.002) but lower in participants of African ancestry (p value = 0.003). In a subset of 47 individuals from whom serial samples were collected up to 6 years apart, complex changes were noted over time and showed an overall increase in the proportion of mosaic cells as age increased. Our large combined sample allowed for a unique ability to characterize detectable genetic mosaicism involving large structural events and strengthens the emerging evidence of non-random erosion of the genome in the aging population.

    • To investigate large structural clonal mosaicism of chromosome X, we analysed the SNP microarray intensity data of 38,303 women from cancer genome-wide association studies (20,878 cases and 17,425 controls) and detected 124 mosaic X events >2 Mb in 97 (0.25%) women. Here we show rates for X-chromosome mosaicism are four times higher than mean autosomal rates; X mosaic events more often include the entire chromosome and participants with X events more likely harbour autosomal mosaic events. X mosaicism frequency increases with age (0.11% in 50-year olds; 0.45% in 75-year olds), as reported for Y and autosomes. Methylation array analyses of 33 women with X mosaicism indicate events preferentially involve the inactive X chromosome. Our results provide further evidence that the sex chromosomes undergo mosaic events more frequently than autosomes, which could have implications for understanding the underlying mechanisms of mosaic events and their possible contribution to risk for chronic diseases.

    • In this brief, a novel approximation method and its optimized hardware implementation are proposed for the sigmoid function used in Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). Based on piecewise approximation and truncated Taylor series expansion, the proposed method achieves very good approximation with low complexity while exploiting data representation with powers of two. In addition, by analyzing gradients of the sigmoid function, a small trick is introduced to improve the approximation precision. Furthermore, to reduce the hardware complexity and shorten the critical path, sampled values of the function are generated with simple logical-mapping. It is shown that the proposed approximation schemes can be implemented with purely combinational logic and the sigmoid function can be computed in one clock cycle. The experimental results demonstrate that the mean absolute errors are at the order of 1 x 10(-3). Compared with prior arts, the new design can obtain significant improvement in critical path with comparable performance.

  • A Universal Approximation Method and Optimized Hardware Architectures for Arithmetic Functions Based on Stochastic Computing

    • Stochastic computing (SC) has been applied on the implementations of complex arithmetic functions. Complicated polynomial-based approximations lead to large hardware complexity of previous SC circuits for arithmetic functions. In this paper, a novel piecewise approximation method based on Taylor series expansion is proposed for complex arithmetic functions. Efficient implementations based on unipolar stochastic logic are presented for the monotonic functions. Furthermore, detailed optimization schemes are provided for the non-monotonic functions. Using NAND and AND gates as main computing elements, the optimized hardware architectures have extremely low complexity. The experimental results show that a broad range of arithmetic functions can be implemented with the proposed SC circuits, and the mean absolute errors can achieve the order of 1 x 10(-3). Compared with the state-of-the-art works, the approximation precision for some typical functions can be increased by more than 8x with our method. In addition, the proposed circuits outperform the previous methods in hardware complexity and critical path significantly.

  • Accelerating Deep Neural Networks by Combining Block-Circulant Matrices and Low-Precision Weights

    • As a key ingredient of deep neural networks (DNNs), fully-connected (FC) layers are widely used in various artificial intelligence applications. However, there are many parameters in FC layers, so the efficient process of FC layers is restricted by memory bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a compression approach combining block-circulant matrix-based weight representation and power-of-two quantization. Applying block-circulant matrices in FC layers can reduce the storage complexity from O(k2) to O(k). By quantizing the weights into integer powers of two, the multiplications in the reference can be replaced by shift and add operations. The memory usages of models for MNIST, CIFAR-10 and ImageNet can be compressed by 171x, 2731x and 128x with minimal accuracy loss, respectively. A configurable parallel hardware architecture is then proposed for processing the compressed FC layers efficiently. Without multipliers, a block matrix-vector multiplication module (B-MV) is used as the computing kernel. The architecture is flexible to support FC layers of various compression ratios with small footprint. Simultaneously, the memory access can be significantly reduced by using the configurable architecture. Measurement results show that the accelerator has a processing power of 409.6 GOPS, and achieves 5.3 TOPS/W energy efficiency at 800 MHz.

  • Analysis of Heritability and Shared Heritability Based on Genome-Wide Association Studies for 13 Cancer Types

    • Background: Studies of related individuals have consistently demonstrated notable familial aggregation of cancer. We aim to estimate the heritability and genetic correlation attributable to the additive effects of common single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for cancer at 13 anatomical sites. Methods: Between 2007 and 2014, the US National Cancer Institute has generated data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for 49 492 cancer case patients and 34 131 control patients. We apply novel mixed model methodology (GCTA) to this GWAS data to estimate the heritability of individual cancers, as well as the proportion of heritability attributable to cigarette smoking in smoking-related cancers, and the genetic correlation between pairs of cancers. Results: GWAS heritability was statistically significant at nearly all sites, with the estimates of array-based heritability, h(l)(2), on the liability threshold (LT) scale ranging from 0.05 to 0.38. Estimating the combined heritability of multiple smoking characteristics, we calculate that at least 24% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 14% to 37%) and 7% (95% CI = 4% to 11%) of the heritability for lung and bladder cancer, respectively, can be attributed to genetic determinants of smoking. Most pairs of cancers studied did not show evidence of strong genetic correlation. We found only four pairs of cancers with marginally statistically significant correlations, specifically kidney and testes (rho = 0.73, SE = 0.28), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and pediatric osteosarcoma (rho = 0.53, SE = 0.21), DLBCL and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) (rho = 0.51, SE = 0.18), and bladder and lung (rho = 0.35, SE = 0.14). Correlation analysis also indicates that the genetic architecture of lung cancer differs between a smoking population of European ancestry and a nonsmoking Asian population, allowing for the possibility that the genetic etiology for the same disease can vary by population and environmental exposures. Conclusion: Our results provide important insights into the genetic architecture of cancers and suggest new avenues for investigation.

    • A novel kind of Z-scheme ternary heterojunctions phosphate-doped BiVO4/graphene quantum dots/P-doped g-C3N4 (BVP/GQDs/PCN) were fabricated for the visible light degradation of norfloxacin (NOR), a typical antibiotic. Compared with binary type-II heterojunction phosphate-doped BiVO4/PCN (BVP/PCN), Z-scheme BVP/GQDs/PCN exhibited promoted interfacial charge transfer efficiency and broadened visible light response range, endowing them with excellent photodegradation activity and mineralization ability in NOR degradation. A high NOR degradation rate of 86.3% with a removal rate of total organic carbon (TOC) of 55.8% can be achieved over BVP/GQDs/PCN for 120 min visible light irradiation, which is an excellent performance compared with ever reported similar photocatalysts. In particular, because of the enhanced redox ability of photogenerated charges and the generation of multiple active species (eg. [rad]OH and [rad]O2−) over Z-scheme photocatalytic system, the accumulation of highly toxic degradation intermediates was greatly inhibited, and a better detoxication performance was obtained compared to PCN and BVP/PCN. This work may shed light on the inhibition of highly toxic degradation intermediates of antibiotics by regulating the charge transfer mechanism, photocatalytic active species, and the degradation pathway of antibiotics.
