  • Towards 6G wireless communication networks: vision, enabling technologies, and new paradigm shifts

    • The fifth generation (5G) wireless communication networks are being deployed worldwide from 2020 and more capabilities are in the process of being standardized, such as mass connectivity, ultra-reliability, and guaranteed low latency. However, 5G will not meet all requirements of the future in 2030 and beyond, and sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks are expected to provide global coverage, enhanced spectral/energy/cost efficiency, better intelligence level and security, etc. To meet these requirements, 6G networks will rely on new enabling technologies, i.e., air interface and transmission technologies and novel network architecture, such as waveform design, multiple access, channel coding schemes, multi-antenna technologies, network slicing, cell-free architecture, and cloud/fog/edge computing. Our vision on 6G is that it will have four new paradigm shifts. First, to satisfy the requirement of global coverage, 6G will not be limited to terrestrial communication networks, which will need to be complemented with non-terrestrial networks such as satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication networks, thus achieving a space-air-ground-sea integrated communication network. Second, all spectra will be fully explored to further increase data rates and connection density, including the sub-6 GHz, millimeter wave (mmWave), terahertz (THz), and optical frequency bands. Third, facing the big datasets generated by the use of extremely heterogeneous networks, diverse communication scenarios, large numbers of antennas, wide bandwidths, and new service requirements, 6G networks will enable a new range of smart applications with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technologies. Fourth, network security will have to be strengthened when developing 6G networks. This article provides a comprehensive survey of recent advances and future trends in these four aspects. Clearly, 6G with additional technical requirements beyond those of 5G will enable faster and further communications to the extent that the boundary between physical and cyber worlds disappears.

    • Birds are the most species-rich class of tetrapod vertebrates and have wide relevance across many research fields. We explored bird macroevolution using full genomes from 48 avian species representing all major extant clades. The avian genome is principally characterized by its constrained size, which predominantly arose because of lineage-specific erosion of repetitive elements, large segmental deletions, and gene loss. Avian genomes furthermore show a remarkably high degree of evolutionary stasis at the levels of nucleotide sequence, gene synteny, and chromosomal structure. Despite this pattern of conservation, we detected many non-neutral evolutionary changes in protein-coding genes and noncoding regions. These analyses reveal that pan-avian genomic diversity covaries with adaptations to different lifestyles and convergent evolution of traits.

    • Using a data sample of 448.1 x 10(6) psi(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII, we perform search for the hadronic transition h(c)-> pi(+)pi(-) J/psi via psi (3686) -> pi(0)hc. No signals of the transition are observed, and the upper limit on the product branching fraction B(sigma(3686) -> pi(0)h(c))B(h(c) -> pi(+)pi(-) J/psi) at the 90% confidence level (C. L.) is determined to be 2.0 x 10(-6). This is the most stringent upper limit to date.

  • Heat and Humidity Transport Analysis Inside a Special Underground Building

    • The calculation of heat and humidity load serves as the cornerstone of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) design. Nevertheless, as the heat and humidity load characteristics of underground structures differ substantially from those of above-ground structures, it is a challenge to derive their accurate calculation procedure through engineering experience. Therefore, it is particularly important to carry out quantitative research on heat and humidity load. This study used Design Builder software to study the inf luence of the design state point of air conditioning in underground buildings on energy consumption. The study showed that compared with the single design temperature of 18°C, setting the temperature of 16°C in winter and 22°C in summer could reduce energy consumption by about 59%. And the hourly heat load, cooling load and humidity load in one year are simulated and calculated so as to quantitatively analyze the characteristics of the load. This provides a database for selecting suitable HVAC equipment. It is further emphasized that dehumidification is the key to HVAC design of underground structures, which provides a reference for similar engineering designs.

    • Photoinduced electron injection from the sensitizer Ru(dcbpy)2(NCS)2 (RuN3) into SnO2 and TiO2 nanocrystalline films occurs by two distinct channels on the femto- and picosecond time scales. The faster electron injection into the conduction band of the different semiconductors originates from the initially excited singlet state of RuN3, and occurs in competition with intersystem crossing. The rate of singlet electron injection is faster to TiO2 (1/55 fs-1) than to SnO2 (1/145 fs-1), in agreement with higher density of conduction band acceptor states in the former semiconductor. As a result of competition between the ultrafast processes, for TiO2 singlet, whereas for SnO2 triplet electron injection is dominant. Electron injection from the triplet state is nonexponential and can be fitted with time constants ranging from ~1 ps (2.5 ps for SnO2) to ~50 ps for both semiconductors. The major part of triplet injection is independent of the semiconductor and is most likely controlled by intramolecular dynamics in RuN3. The overall time scale and the yield of electron injection to the two semiconductors are very similar, suggesting that processes other than electron injection are responsible for the difference in efficiencies of solar cells made of these materials.

    • Burst super-resolution has received increased attention in recent years due to its applications in mobile photography. By merging information from multiple shifted images of a scene, burst super-resolution aims to recover details which otherwise cannot be obtained using a simple input image. This paper reviews the NTIRE 2022 challenge on burst super-resolution. In the challenge, the participants were tasked with generating a clean RGB image with 4x higher resolution, given a RAW noisy burst as input. That is, the methods need to perform joint denoising, demosaicking, and super-resolution. The challenge consisted of 2 tracks. Track 1 employed synthetic data, where pixel-accurate high-resolution ground truths are available. Track 2 on the other hand used real-world bursts captured from a handheld camera, along with approximately aligned reference images captured using a DSLR. 14 teams participated in the final testing phase. The top performing methods establish a new state-of-the-art on the burst super-resolution task.

    • Caeruleanone A (1), a novel rotenoid with an unprecedented arrangement of the D-ring, was isolated with another two new analogues, caeruleanones B (2) and C (3), together with 11 known rotenoids from the fruits of Millettia caerulea. The structures of the new compounds were determined by spectroscopic data analysis, with that of 1 being confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compounds 2 and 3 displayed potent mitochondrial transmembrane potential inhibitory and quinone reductase induction activities.
