  • Ozonation efficiency in removing organic micro pollutants from wastewater with respect to hydraulic loading rates and different wastewaters
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 1385-8947. ; 325, s. 310-321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organic micro pollutants can be removed from water by ozonation. In this article we studied the performance of ozonation under real life conditions and compared results of the same ozonation pilot plant installed at different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) thus operating with different waters. The comparability of the removal and reaction rate constants from one waste water treatment plant were low in respect to reaction rate, removal as well as to response to the specific ozone dose. Neither pH-value nor residual nitrite concentrations were the driving force considering these differences. Further tests with different loadings were conducted at the same WWTP under different weather conditions. For the different hydraulic loading of the biological plant, the ozonation was running with rather similar removal rates concerning the same specific (TOC normalized) ozone dose. The compounds that were removed quantitatively under dry weather were still removed well with three times dry weather flow. Using a dataset from one WWTP to optimize operation in another one is thus questionable.

  • Detection of Pathogenic Viruses in Sewage Provided Early Warnings of Hepatitis A Virus and Norovirus Outbreaks
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Applied and Environmental Microbiology. - : American Society for Microbiology. - 0099-2240 .- 1098-5336. ; 80:21, s. 6771-6781
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most persons infected with enterically transmitted viruses shed large amounts of virus in feces for days or weeks, both before and after onset of symptoms. Therefore, viruses causing gastroenteritis may be detected in wastewater, even if only a few persons are infected. In this study, the presence of eight pathogenic viruses (norovirus, astrovirus, rotavirus, adenovirus, Aichi virus, parechovirus, hepatitis A virus [HAV], and hepatitis E virus) was investigated in sewage to explore whether their identification could be used as an early warning of outbreaks. Samples of the untreated sewage were collected in proportion to flow at Ryaverket, Gothenburg, Sweden. Daily samples collected during every second week between January and May 2013 were pooled and analyzed for detection of viruses by concentration through adsorption to milk proteins and PCR. The largest amount of noroviruses was detected in sewage 2 to 3 weeks before most patients were diagnosed with this infection in Gothenburg. The other viruses were detected at lower levels. HAV was detected between weeks 5 and 13, and partial sequencing of the structural VP1protein identified three different strains. Two strains were involved in an ongoing outbreak in Scandinavia and were also identified in samples from patients with acute hepatitis A in Gothenburg during spring of 2013. The third strain was unique and was not detected in any patient sample. The method used may thus be a tool to detect incipient outbreaks of these viruses and provide early warning before the causative pathogens have been recognized in health care.

  • Does waterborne citalopram affect the aggressive and sexual behaviour of rainbow trout and guppy?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of hazardous materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-3336 .- 0304-3894. ; 187:1-3, s. 596-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Citalopram is one of several selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) commonly found in treated sewage effluents. Accordingly, there are concerns about possible adverse effects of SSRIs on aquatic organisms, particularly behavioural effects similar to those associated with SSRI use in humans. Rainbow trout fry and adult male guppies were therefore exposed to waterborne citalopram, ranging from environmentally relevant to high concentrations (1, 10, 100 μg/L) for 3-7 days. Under these experimental conditions citalopram does not appear to cause significant effects on aggression in rainbow trout fry or on sexual behaviour in male guppies. This may be explained by a relatively low uptake of citalopram from water to fish.

  • Is heart rate in fish a sensitive indicator to evaluate acute effects of β-blockers in surface water?
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1382-6689. ; 22, s. 338-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have investigated if propranolol, a non-selective β-blocker present in sewage effluents, affects heart rate in rainbow trout. During a 48 h exposure to a very high concentration of propranolol (70.9 μg/L) no effects on heart rate were found. After a subsequent intravenous injection of propranolol, heart rate remained unaffected in pre-exposed fish but was significantly lowered in naïve fish. Other studies have reported effects on the reproduction of fish by propranolol dissolved in water at much lower concentrations. The present study suggests that physiological systems under homeostatic control, like heart rate, may not be particularly sensitive despite being direct targets.
