  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Revista UNICREA. - : Universidade Corporativa do Crea-SC. - 2965-2081. ; 1:2, s. 273-298
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate whether a combined Lean Six Sigma (L6S) philosophy can help to improve agility on supply chain and companies. Individual organizations cannot get agility, until they invest in their supply chain’s agility. Agile Supply Chain is recognized as very difficult to achieve in practice, and use of Lean Six Sigma Philosophy can be one option to get it.Design/methodology/approach: The research follows the cases study methodology. A theory background is used with the objective of know how the executives and academics see the concept of agility in supply chain (sc) and companies. Furthermore, multiple-case study has been performed, by means of qualitative methods of data collection, such as observations, document analysis and face-to-face interviews with different specialist. Pattern matching is used to compare the empirical result with the predictive one from literature.Findings: This research demonstrate positively that L6S can help to improve to agility on supply chain and companies. The seven companies included in the study have integrated some tools and methods from both philosophies and all have aligned L6S with good results in agility concept. Also, shows that using L6S philosophy production speed will increase and responsiveness and flexibility will improve combined with a more robust process. It has been indicated that agility implies increased variation, where a Six Sigma approach is useful controlling and monitoring such variations. Originality/value: The research point out that a combined Lean Six Sigma philosophy develop the Agile Supply Chain and companies. Lean and Agility philosophies are closely related, and the Lean philosophy may be one stage into the development of agility. Although at the same time, they differ in many respects.

  • Análise da Integração Interfuncional nos Pontos de Contato de Processos de Desenvolvimento de Sementes
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 36th Encontro Nacional de Engenharia de Produção, João Pessoa, 3-6 October, 2016..

[Demand Forecast in the Automobile Industry] : Papel da Integração Interfuncional. [The Role of Cross-Functional Integration]
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Revista ADM.MADE. - : Universidade Estacio de Sa. - 2237-5139. ; 21:3, s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Characterizing Cross-Functional Teams in Service Companies : A Case Study from Telecom Industry
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Managing Intellectual Capital and Innovation for Sustainable and Inclusive Society: Proceedings of the MakeLearn and TIIM Joint International Conference 2015. - : ToKnowPress. - 9789616914130 ; , s. 2139-2148
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of cross-functional integration is based on the synchronization between different functions to meet organizational goals. One of the main elements identified in the literature within this theme is the cross-functional team (CFT), which is a group composed by members with different functional knowledge and experiences, from different parts of the organization, and under a leadership to accomplish a specific task. The objective of this paper is to characterize the internal dynamics of CFTs in different processes, such as: strategy development, product development, portfolio management, sales channels management, and business evaluation. Through a literature review, four basic dimensions were identified: Team’s Constitution; Task Drivers; Behaviors and Attitudes; Environmental Factors. A case study in a Brazilian service company was conducted in order to analyze these four dimensions in several teams. In-depth interviews, observation and documentary research were used for data collection. The results point out the necessity to invest time and attention in the constitution of the CFT, in order to select the appropriate functions it should be composed of, based on performance expectations. When the constitution of the team is characterized by a massive presence of senior members, positive impacts can be generated, such as: collaboration and team cohesion. This helps to reach team’s internal goals without frequent help from top management. This paper also presents implications related to the four studied dimensions, indicating ways to mitigate risks of failures and to avoid conflict within teams, and by that obtaining a superior performance.

  • Integration through cross-functional teams in a service company
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Business Review. - 0955-534X .- 1758-7107. ; 28:4, s. 405-430
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to characterize the internal dynamics of cross-functional teams (CFTs) in different organizational processes in a service company.Design/methodology/approach: A case study from a Brazilian service company was conducted. CFTs in five different organizational processes (strategy development, product development, portfolio management, sales channels management and business analysis) were analyzed through in-depth interviews, documents and non-participant observation.Findings: A framework with four pillars was constructed: constitution of the CFT, task drivers, behavior and attitudes of the team and personal motivators. It was possible to analyze the process of how a group acts and reacts under changing circumstances based on the pillars included in the framework.Research limitations/implications: The study is focused on creating analytical generalizability. Several insights in the 12 propositions presented in this study may be investigated in future research to validate the identified relationships among the pillars included in the framework. Moreover, the proposed framework allows the teams to be analyzed through a multidimensional view: structure, processes and impacts.Practical implications: If the semantic boundaries of the communication are not well delineated, the differences in understanding can generate manifest conflicts. Moreover, the workload in a CFT seems to be larger and more complex than working in a functional activity; however, members perceive that it reduces the risk of unemployment and increases motivation.Originality/value: The present study contributes to the extant literature with the proposal of a set of new exploratory propositions that can support future quantitative research about the use of CFTs in the service industry context.

  • Shedding Light on the Brazilian Amazon Biotrade : A Study on Sustainable Development in Native Communities
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 14:19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Amazon is a biodiversity hotspot. Around 90% of its territory is inhabited by native communities, who spontaneously organize themselves into groups of extractivists and small producers, relying on biodiversity as their primary means of sustenance. This paper aims to discuss how the biotrade of Amazonian biodiversity goods affects native communities with respect to environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Based on a sample of 178 native extractivists in four communities, we concluded that biotrade enabled native communities to market their products by adapting to existing conditions, considering the difficulties and the expectations of traditional residents, and contributed to the three dimensions of sustainable development.

  • How Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence and augmented reality can boost Digital Lean Six Sigma
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Total Quality Management and Business Excellence. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1478-3363 .- 1478-3371.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The impact of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) and its enabling technologies in the Lean Six Sigma (LSS) approach have been widely discussed by practitioners and researchers in the last decade. However, current literature still lacks consistent knowledge about the joint application of I4.0, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Augmented Reality (AR) in the context of LSS practices. It is expected that the symbiosis between these technologies and methods can generate new applications in the field of operational excellence. This study provides a theoretical landscape of how I4.0, AI and AR can boost digital LSS. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted using articles published from 2011 to 2022 in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. In addition to the quantitative analysis performed with 313 selected articles, a thematic analysis covering 31 empirical works provides examples regarding how I4.0, AI and AR technologies can singularly support LSS practices. The SLR exposed trends on the research topics, the main thematic areas, and empirical evidence regarding how I4.0, AI and AR technologies have supported LSS practices. This study can help practitioners identifying new applications of I4.0 technologies and AI algorithms in order to expand the traditional toolbox and methods used in LSS.

  • Antecedents of cross-functional integration level and their organizational impact
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of business & industrial marketing. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0885-8624 .- 2052-1189. ; 34:8, s. 1706-1723
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to develop a model to predict the antecedents of the integration level among marketing, logistics and production, considering the influence of formal and informal factors that generate integration and the existence of conflicts.Design/methodology/approach: A survey of 179 participants from all regions of Brazil was conducted. A parsimonious model including four dimensions and 34 variables was developed through confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling.Findings: The field data corroborate studies dealing with the impact of various formal and informal integration factors on the cross-functional integration level as a construct. Furthermore, this paper concludes that the level of cross-functional can be defined as: the intensity of the relationship among internal functions which can be measured by the mutual existence of formal and informal factors and the absence of manifest conflicts.Research limitations/implications: The findings of this paper cannot be generalized because of the convenience sampling. Future research could apply a probabilistic sampling and try to explore other geographical settings in both national and international contexts.Practical implications: The proposed model can generate important information for managers by pointing out variables that can predict the integration level and their impacts on the organizational performance. The paper concludes with examples about how the model could be useful in several practical situations.Originality/value: This paper proposes a model with reasonable accuracy to predict the integration level and overcomes prior research limitations with respect to models to predict the antecedents of the integration level, particularly the role of conflicts in the integration processes.
