  • A system analysis of LKAB Malmberget heating system to centralisation and substitution of fossil fuels to biofuels
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: PRES 2012, 15th Conference on Process Integration, Modelling and Optimisation for Energy Saving and Pollution Reduction. - : AIDIC Servizi S.r.l.. - 9788895608204 ; , s. 793-798, s. 793-798
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An industrial heating system connected to an iron ore mine and iron ore upgrading processing system is presented. The profitability of introducing measures for increased energy efficiency and improved waste heat utilisation has been investigated. The results show that a full centralisation of the system with increased heat recovery and densified wood based boilers is the most financial solution of a life span over twenty years. The system will be more flexible and easy to connect with external users if a centralisation is made. To minimise the risk of increased energy prices it is recommended to increase waste heat utilisation which will be most profitable if the system is centralised. Use of bio based boilers will make the system free from fossil fuels.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The profitability of shifting from a current decentralized and oil- and electricity-based heat production to a centralized system was evaluated. Existing decentralized system with upcoming retrofit investment was not efficient. Three cases showing the investment costs, energy costs, maintenance costs, and CO2 used are presented. The financial evaluation of this work was made considering 10% discount rate. Sensitivity analysis should be made for various energy costs and discount rates. In Malmberget, the heat demand varies significantly from winter to summer. This means the system needs a high maximal capacity but only a part time of the year. The waste heat recovery cannot cover for the maximum heat load in winter, so extra heat capacity is required. This extra heat can be made from different sources, e.g., electricity, oil, coal, biomass, and heat, from district. Thus, a centralized system will, in several ways, make the heat deliveries and future improvements more flexible. It will be able to increase the life time of boilers, which is not needed all year around. It is easier to connect new buildings and processes to the system and control of the system will be easier when most of the heat is produced in the same building. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the CHISA 2012 - 20th International Congress of Chemical and Process Engineering and PRES 2012 - 15th Conference on Process Integration, Modelling and Optimisation for Energy Saving and Pollution Reduction (Prague, Czech Republic 8/25-29/2012).

  • Role of ferrous raw materials in the energy efficiency of integrated steelmaking
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ISIJ International. - : Iron and Steel Institute of Japan. - 0915-1559 .- 1347-5460. ; 54:3, s. 596-604
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The role of ferrous raw materials and iron ore agglomeration in energy consumption of integrated steelmaking has been evaluated using a system-wide model. Four steelplant cases were defined: typical European steelplant with sinterplant; Nordic steelplant with sinterplant; European steelplant with sinter:pellet ratio of 50%, and Nordic steelplant charging pellets and a small amount of briquettes. Energy consumption in the mining system were estimated from published statistics at 150 MJ/t for lump ore and sinter fines, 650 MJ/t for pellets made from magnetite and 1 050 MJ/t for pellets made from hematite. An integrated steelplant model including all major unit operations was used to calculate overall system energy consumption from iron ore mining to hot rolled coil. Adjustments were made accounting for energy benefit of ground granulated blast furnace slag in cement production, energy required for cement production required for briquetting, and excess BF and BOF gas producing electricity in a 32% efficient power plant. The system-wide net adjusted energy in the first three steeplant cases showed marginal improvement with use of high grade sinter fines and decrease of pellet/sinter ratio to 50% compared to typical European case. Nordic steelplant charging pellets and briquettes had a reduction in system-wide energy of 5% to 8% for charging pellets from hematite or magnetite respectively compared to the typical European steelplant charging sinter and pellets made from hematite ore. Replacement of sinter with pellets was mainly responsible for the improvement with smaller contributions from magnetite ore in pelletizing.

  • Moraxella catarrhalis-dependent tonsillar B cell activation does not lead to apoptosis but to vigorous proliferation resulting in nonspecific IgM production.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Leukocyte Biology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1938-3673 .- 0741-5400. ; 83, s. 1370-1378
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The respiratory pathogen Moraxella catarrhalis has a high affinity for human IgD and is mitogenic for peripheral blood B lymphocytes. Moraxella IgD-binding protein, which is a multifunctional outer membrane protein with adhesive properties, is responsible for the interaction. Previous experiments with the Ig-binding B cell superantigens protein A and protein L from Staphylococcus aureus and Peptostreptococcus magnus, respectively, have suggested that nonimmune BCR cross-linking induces B cell apoptosis through the intrinsic pathway. The goal of this study was to characterize early and late B cell events in the presence of M. catarrhalis in comparison with S. aureus. Despite an increased phosphatidyl serine translocation as revealed by Annexin V binding in flow cytometry analyses, neither M. catarrhalis nor S. aureus induced activation-associated apoptotic cell death in purified human tonsillar B cells. In contrast, a vigorous B cell proliferation, as quantified using thymidine incorporation and CFSE staining, was observed. An increased expression of an array of surface proteins (i.e., CD19, CD21, CD40, CD45, CD54, CD69, CD86, CD95, and HLA-DR) and IgM production was found upon activation with M. catarrhalis. In conclusion, M. catarrhalis-dependent B cell activation does not result in apoptosis but in cell division and nonspecific IgM synthesis, suggesting that the bacterial interaction with tonsillar B cells serves to redirect the early adaptive immune response.

  • Superantigen- and TLR-dependent activation of tonsillar B cells after receptor-mediated endocytosis.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of immunology. - : The American Association of Immunologists. - 1550-6606 .- 0022-1767. ; 182:8, s. 4713-4720
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Classical B lymphocyte activation is dependent on BCR cross-linking in combination with physical interaction with Th cells. Other B cell molecules that contribute to the activation are complement, cytokine, and TLRs recognizing specific pathogen-associated molecular patterns. Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis is a common Gram-negative respiratory pathogen that induces proliferation in human IgD-expressing B cells independently of T cell help. The activation is initiated by the B cell superantigen Moraxella IgD-binding protein (MID) through a nonimmune cross-linking of IgD. However, IgD cross-linking alone is not sufficient to induce proliferation. In this study, we characterized the significance of TLRs in superantigen-dependent B cell activation using whole bacteria or rMID in the presence or absence of TLR ligands. IgD cross-linking by MID sensitized B cells obtained from children with tonsillar hyperplasia for mainly TLR9, whereas TLRs 1, 2, 6, and 7 were less important. The Moraxella-induced activation was inhibited when a dominant-negative TLR9 ligand was added. Interestingly, BCR-mediated endocytosis of whole Moraxella and degradation of live bacteria in naive B cells were observed with fluorescence, confocal, and transmission electron microscopy. This unique observation proved the strong intracellular TLR9 response as well as highlighted the Ag-presenting function of B cells. In conclusion, our findings suggest an important role of TLRs in the adaptive immune response and reveal novel insights into the T cell-independent B cell activation induced by bacteria.

  • A Cross-Sectional Cohort Study of Extended-Spectrum-Beta-Lactamase-Producing Enterobacterales in Patients with Traveler's Diarrhea
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. - 1098-6596. ; 64:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Patients with traveler’s diarrhea (TD) can acquire extended-spectrum-beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing members of the Enterobacterales (EPE) during travel to areas of endemicity. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of EPE carriage in travelers from southern Sweden who were sampled for bacterial diagnostics of TD compared to those of EPE carriage 10 years ago. Clinical samples sent for culture of common causes of bacterial enterocolitis, if the referral stated foreign travel, were included in the study. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was done according to the EUCAST disk diffusion test method. EPE strains were subjected to whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Eighty-four of 303 patients carried a total of 92 ESBL-producing members of the Enterobacterales. The overall prevalence of EPE in tested samples was thus 28%, compared to 24% 10 years earlier (P = 0.33). Among 86 strains available for WGS, 47 different sequence types (STs) were identified, and there were only 5 ST131 strains. Of the 79 Escherichia coli isolates, 76% carried at least one fim (type 1 fimbria) gene, 29% carried at least one pap (p-fimbriae) gene, and 43% were extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) or uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC). Over half of the E. coli strains (57%) were intestinal pathogenic E. coli, most commonly enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) (33%), and enteroinvasive E. coli EIEC (22%). A relatively high proportion of patients with traveler’s diarrhea carry EPE, but there was no significant increase compared to 10 years ago. Most E. coli strains were intestinal pathogenic strains. A comparatively high proportion of the strains were ExPEC/UPEC, many expressing the virulence genes pap and/or fim. (This project was assigned ClinicalTrials.gov number NCT03866291.)
