  • Public libraries as public sphere institutions : A comparative study of perceptions of the public library's role in six European countries
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Documentation. - Bingley : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0022-0418 .- 1758-7379. ; 75:6, s. 1396-1415
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the role of public libraries as institutions underpinning a democratic public sphere as reasons legitimizing libraries compared to reasons that are more traditional and the actual use of libraries as public sphere arenas.Design/methodology/approachA survey of representative samples of the adult population in six countries – Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Hungary and Switzerland – was undertaken.FindingsLegitimations related to the libraries role as a meeting place and arena for public debate are ranked as the 3 least important out of 12 possible legitimations for upholding a public library service. Libraries are, however, used extensively by the users to access citizenship information and to participate in public sphere relevant meetings.Originality/valueFew studies have empirically analyzed the role of libraries in upholding a democratic and sustainable public sphere. This study contributes in filling that gap.

  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Shared Reading i Skandinavia : Forskning og praksis - Forskning og praksis. - 9788293298212 - 9788293298229 ; , s. 257-287
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter discusses how Shared Reading (SR) can be used as a method when teaching university students in professional education. Drawing on experiences from both the Medical School and the Creative Writing Program, the chapter shows how SR can be used to enhance professional development in two different settings. In Medical School, SR is used to create a space for exploration of relational and emotional aspects of the profession, which is here exemplified with the reading of poetry after the students’ first autopsy. In the Creative Writing Program, SR is used to slow down the reading, giving the students the opportunity to read the text as if it was still a work-in-progress, and a so-called ‘flexible’ text. The discussion shows the versatility of the method: how as, even as the method is the same, the differences come from the educational context, and what the students learn is to a large extent dependent on their future profession.

  • Libros Para Pueblos : An Exploratory Case Study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Partnership. - : University of Guelph. - 1911-9593. ; :1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is the result of an introductory two-year case study project that investigated community libraries supported by the not-for-profit organization Libros Para Pueblos (LPP) in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Libros Para Pueblos (LPP) is a largely volunteer-run library organization based in the capital city of Oaxaca de Juarez. In order to analyse the work of LPP we used Mostert & Vermeulen's (1998) nine areas for evaluation of community libraries. Over the past 20 years, the number of libraries the organization supports has grown from two to more than 70 throughout the state. The work that has facilitated this growth is carried out by a small Mexican staff, along with an Executive Committee and a Board of Directors made up of Americans and Canadians living in Mexico. The work is both time consuming and demanding, but it is fuelled by a positive reading ideology that is a result of memories of childhood reading. This motivation is shared by a network of 11 Mexican Regional Volunteer Coordinators who train and support local library workers. The local workers are often doing their tequio, which is a social requirement of working for one or two years in public service. We argue that the success of LPP libraries is influenced by: 1) an organizational structure that mandates Mexican leadership at the Executive level and in paid staff positions; 2) initiation from local representative; 3) the unique and complex socialist community configurations of the Oaxacan region; 4) a community of retirees who volunteer at many levels; and 5) national and international donations.

  • Nyktra svenskar : Godtemplarrörelsen och den nationella identiteten 1879–1918
  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this study is the spread of nationalist ideology in the Good Templar movement – one of the largest mass organisations in Sweden in the decades preceding the introduction of universal suffrage following World War One. This temperance organisation had many significant ideological functions. It was an important arena of integration for Liberal and Social Democrat politicians, a pioneer of popular education, and a significant organiser of leisure activities. It is argued that the nationalist ideology in the Good Templar movement was particularly important in reproducing a bourgeois hegemony in Sweden. In opposing the nationalism of the conservatives, liberals and most socialists advocated a national ideology for a new and democratic Sweden. They idealised the ‘people’ of the popular movements in political issues, in the writing of history, and with the spread of folklore. At the same time, this ideology integrated workers, small farmers, schoolteachers etc. into a homogeneous group – the ‘people’, i.e. the nucleus of the nation. Much of this nationalism was considered to be politically neutral, and part of a cultural heritage that was supposed to be spread to the population. Through the consistent singing of the national anthem at the end of the temperance meeting, and through the ritual flying of the flag at larger gatherings, a general national ideology was disseminated. This nationalism was largely shared by socialists and non-socialists, with the purpose of creating consent to the parliamentary, bourgeois-democratic state. The nationalism of the Good Templars was largely cultural rather than civic. Especially after 1900, the folkloristic element of the movement was substantial. In many ways the temperance movement was the principal agent in making folk dances, folk games, and ritual meetings in the outdoors typical elements of Swedish nationalism.

  • Following the Footnotes : A Bibliometric Analysis of Citation Patterns in Literary Studies
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis provides an in-depth study of the possibilities of applying bibliometric methods to the research field of literary studies. The four articles that constitute the backbone of this thesis focus on different aspects of references and citations in literary studies: from the use of references in the text to citation patterns among 34 literature journals. The analysis covers both an Anglo-Saxon context as well as research in Swedish literary studies, and the materials used include Web of Science data, references in the Swedish literature journal TFL (Tidskrift för Litteraturvetenskap) and applications to the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). A study is also made of the influence of one single publication—Walter Benjamin’s Illuminations—and its impact in literary studies and in wider academia. The results from the four articles are elaborated upon using a theoretical framework that focuses on differences in the social and intellectual organization of research fields. According to these theories literary studies can be described as a fragmented, heterogenic, interdisciplinary and ‘rural’ field with a diverse audience. The fragmented and rural organization of the field is reflected in low citation frequencies as well as in the difficulties in discerning research specialities in co-citation mappings, while the analysis of the intellectual base (highly cited authors) is an example of the heterogenic and interdisciplinary character of the field, as it includes authors from many fields across the humanities and the social sciences. The thesis emphasizes that bibliometric studies of research fields in the humanities need to incorporate non-English and non-journal publications in order to produce valid and fair results. Moreover, bibliometric methods must be modified in accordance with the organization of research in a particular field, and differences in referencing practices and citation patterns ought to be considered. Consequently, it is advised that bibliometric measures for evaluating research in these fields should, if used at all, be applied with great caution.
