  • New developments in cost modeling for the LHC computing
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: EPJ Web of Conferences. - : EDP Sciences. - 2100-014X. ; 245, s. 03014-03014
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increase in the scale of LHC computing during Run 3 and Run 4 (HL-LHC) will certainly require radical changes to the computing models and the data processing of the LHC experiments. The working group established by WLCG and the HEP Software Foundation to investigate all aspects of the cost of computing and how to optimise them has continued producing results and improving our understanding of this process. In particular, experiments have developed more sophisticated ways to calculate their resource needs, we have a much more detailed process to calculate infrastructure costs. This includes studies on the impact of HPC and GPU based resources on meeting the computing demands. We have also developed and perfected tools to quantitatively study the performance of experiments workloads and we are actively collaborating with other activities related to data access, benchmarking and technology cost evolution. In this contribution we expose our recent developments and results and outline the directions of future work.

  • HEP Applications Evaluation of the EDG Testbed and Middleware
  • 2003
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Workpackage 8 of the European Datagrid project was formed in January 2001 with representatives from the four LHC experiments, and with experiment independent people from five of the six main EDG partners. In September 2002 WP8 was strengthened by the addition of effort from BaBar and D0. The original mandate of WP8 was, following the definition of short- and long-term requirements, to port experiment software to the EDG middleware and testbed environment. A major additional activity has been testing the basic functionality and performance of this environment. This paper reviews experiences and evaluations in the areas of job submission, data management, mass storage handling, information systems and monitoring. It also comments on the problems of remote debugging, the portability of code, and scaling problems with increasing numbers of jobs, sites and nodes. Reference is made to the pioneeering work of Atlas and CMS in integrating the use of the EDG Testbed into their data challenges. A forward look is made to essential software developments within EDG and to the necessary cooperation between EDG and LCG for the LCG prototype due in mid 2003.

  • HEP Applications and Their Experience with the Use of DataGrid Middleware
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Grid Computing. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1572-9184 .- 1570-7873. ; 2:4, s. 369-386
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An overview is presented of the characteristics of HEP computing and its mapping to the Grid paradigm. This is followed by a synopsis of the main experiences and lessons learned by HEP experiments in their use of DataGrid middleware using both the EDG application testbed and the LCG production service. Particular reference is made to experiment lsquodata challengesrsquo, and a forward look is given to necessary developments in the framework of the EGEE project
