  • Effect of industrially produced trans fat on markers of systemic inflammation : evidence from a randomized trial in women
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lipid Research. - 0022-2275 .- 1539-7262. ; 52:10, s. 1821-1828
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Consumption of industrially produced trans fatty acids (IP-TFA) has been positively associated with systemic markers of low-grade inflammation and endothelial dysfunction in cross-sectional studies, but results from intervention studies are inconclusive. Therefore, we conducted a 16 week double-blind parallel intervention study with the objective to examine the effect of IP-TFA intake on bio-markers of inflammation, oxidative stress, and endothelial dysfunction. Fifty-two healthy overweight postmenopausal women (49 completers) were randomly assigned to receive either partially hydrogenated soybean oil (15.7 g/day IP-TFA) or control oil without IP-TFA. After 16 weeks, IP-TFA intake increased baseline-adjusted serum tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha by 12% [95% confidence interval (CI): 5-20; P = 0.002] more in the IP-TFA group compared with controls. Plasma soluble TNF receptors 1 and 2 were also increased by IP-TFA [155 pg/ml (CI: 63-247); P < 0.001 and 480 pg/ml (CI: 72-887); P = 0.02, respectively]. Serum C-reactive protein, interleukin (IL) 6 and adiponectin and subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue mRNA expression of IL6, IL8, TNF alpha, and adiponectin as well as ceramide content were not affected by IP-TFA, nor was urinary 8-iso-prostaglandin-F(2 alpha). In conclusion, this dietary trial indicates that the mechanisms linking dietary IP-TFA to cardiovascular disease may involve activation of the TNF alpha system.

  • The atomic simulation environment-a Python library for working with atoms
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP). - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 29:27
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The atomic simulation environment (ASE) is a software package written in the Python programming language with the aim of setting up, steering, and analyzing atomistic simulations. In ASE, tasks are fully scripted in Python. The powerful syntax of Python combined with the NumPy array library make it possible to perform very complex simulation tasks. For example, a sequence of calculations may be performed with the use of a simple 'for-loop' construction. Calculations of energy, forces, stresses and other quantities are performed through interfaces to many external electronic structure codes or force fields using a uniform interface. On top of this calculator interface, ASE provides modules for performing many standard simulation tasks such as structure optimization, molecular dynamics, handling of constraints and performing nudged elastic band calculations.

  • A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of metformin on myocardial efficiency in insulin-resistant chronic heart failure patients without diabetes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Heart Failure. - : WILEY. - 1388-9842 .- 1879-0844. ; 22:9, s. 1628-1637
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AimsThe present study tested the hypothesis that metformin treatment may increase myocardial efficiency (stroke work/myocardial oxygen consumption) in insulin-resistant patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) without diabetes. Methods and resultsThirty-six HFrEF patients (ejection fraction 378%; median age 66years) were randomised to metformin (n = 19) or placebo (n = 17) for 3months in addition to standard heart failure therapy. The primary endpoint was change in myocardial efficiency expressed as the work metabolic index (WMI), assessed by C-11-acetate positron emission tomography and transthoracic echocardiography. Compared with placebo, metformin treatment (1450 +/- 550 mg/day) increased WMI [absolute mean difference, 1.0mmHg.mL.m(-2).10(6); 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.1 to 1.8; P = 0.03], equivalent to a 20% relative efficiency increase. Patients with above-median plasma metformin levels displayed greater WMI increase (25% vs. -4%; P = 0.02). Metformin reduced myocardial oxygen consumption (-1.6mL O-2.100 g(-1).min(-1); P = 0.014). Cardiac stroke work was preserved (-2J; 95% CI -11 to 7; P = 0.69). Metformin reduced body weight (-2.2kg; 95% CI -3.6 to -0.8; P = 0.003) and glycated haemoglobin levels (-0.2%; 95% CI -0.3 to 0.0; P = 0.02). Changes in resting and exercise ejection fraction, global longitudinal strain, and exercise capacity did not differ between groups. ConclusionMetformin treatment in non-diabetic HFrEF patients improved myocardial efficiency by reducing myocardial oxygen consumption. Measurement of circulating metformin levels differentiated responders from non-responders. These energy-sparing effects of metformin encourage further large-scale investigations in heart failure patients without diabetes.

  • Western esoterism : Ultimate Sacred Postulates and Ritual Fields
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The greater part of Western Esoterism holds beliefs in five important matrices. This branch of esoterism, rooted in a Hermetic milieu, is labelled dialectical esoterism because of the dialectical relationship between the ‘lower’ (man, earth) and the ‘higher’ (heaven, the divine, God). These five matrices are: I: Purpose (pronoia), rather than karma or sin. II: The dialectical relationship between Man and God (or the divine), including the healing of other people, society and/or the Earth. III: The inter-dependency of Dualism and Monism, including the mind and/or the world as a stairway to heaven. IV: Scientific laws are synonymous with spiritual principles. V: The holistic cosmos, including the concept of ‘sympathy’ between its parts. The aim of this thesis is to make clear that Western Esoterism is unique because of the presence of the five matrices and deals with both ‘beliefs’ (recognition) and ‘doing’ (religious practices, e.g. astrology, alchemy, magic and clairvoyance). As a consequence it is also demonstrated that foreign religious ideas and practices can be assimilated because they are transformed and hence adopt new meanings in order to fit the important USP of Western Esoterism.
