  • Laser Metal Wire drop-by-drop Deposition: a material and dilution investigation

    • Additive Manufacturing has become a field of high interest in the industry, mostly due to its strong freedom of design and its flexibility. Numerous Additive Manufacturing techniques exist and present different advantages and disadvantages. The technique investigated in this research is a drop-by-drop deposition alternative to Laser Metal Wire Deposition. This technique is expected to induce a better control over the power input in the material, resulting in a better power efficiency and tailorable material properties. The aim of this research is to investigate selected material properties of the structures produced with the drop-by-drop deposition technique. Multi-drops structures were deposited from 316L, Inconel 625 (NW6625) and AlSi5 (AW4043) wires. Two drop deposition methods were investigated: (i) a contactless recoil pressure driven detachment for 316L and Inconel 625, (ii) a contact-based surface tension driven detachment for AlSi5. A material characterization including optical microscopy, EDS and hardness measurements was performed in transverse and longitudinal cross-sections. The microstructure of the deposited material, the dilution with the substrate and the heat affected zone were analysed. The contactless detachment showed a higher dilution than the contact-based technique due to the laser irradiating the substrate between two drop detachments, which melts the substrate that then mixes with the deposited drops.

    • Mating disruption of the pine sawfly Neodiprion sertifer (Geoffroy) (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae) was strongly indicated by reduced male trap catches in pine plantations permeated with the sex pheromone, (2S, 3S, 7S)‐diprionyl acetate. The trap catch reduction was 95 to near 100% when dispensers every 10 m were used, giving a total release of about 3 mg per hectare and day. Two mg of pheromone per cotton roll dispenser maintained low catches for the whole season (about 2 months) without any renewal of disruption dispensers. An erythro‐mixture was as effective as the pure pheromone isomer. The effects of the experiments on population density and sex ratio were not possible to investigate, due to a general collapse of the population, also outside experimental plots, the year after the experiments. 1995 The Netherlands Entomological Society

  • Differences in morphology and sexual size dimorphism between the Dutch elm disease vectors Scolytus laevis and Scolytus scolytus (Col., Scolytidae)

    • The external differences between the well‐documented S. scolytus and the little studied S. laevis are clarified with the help of SEM micrographs of the frons and abdomen of both sexes of the two species. The convex frons of both male and female S. scolytus is densely covered with short hairs. S. laevis males have a flat frons with long hairs in a pair of bundles, whereas the females have a convex and nearly bald frons. Males of S. scolytus are readily distinguished from females by their long yellow tufts of hair on the anal segment. The pronotal width and elytron length are significantly larger for S. scolytus females than for males. In S. laevis males and females are of the same size but significantly smaller than S. scolytus. The difference between the species in inter‐sexual size variation and frontal hair cover suggests differences in their mating systems. Unterschiede in Morphologie und geschlechtsspezifischem Größendimorphismus zwischen Scolytus laevis und Scolytus scolytus (Col., Scolytidae), zwei Überträgern des Ulmensterben‐Erregers Äußere Unterschiede zwischen der gut untersuchten Art Scolytus scolytus und der bisher nur wenig beachteten Art S. laevis wurden mit Hilfe rasterelektronenmikroskopischer Aufnahmen von Frons und Abdomen beider Arten und Geschlechter dokumentiert. Die konvexe Stirn der S. scolytus‐Männchen und ‐Weibchen ist dicht mit kurzen Haaren bedeckt. S. laevis‐Männchen haben eine flache Stirn, mit langen, in zwei Büscheln angeordneten Haaren; die Weibchen dieser Art hingegen haben eine konvexe und beinahe kahle Stirn. S. scolytus‐Männchen unterscheiden sich durch lange, gelbe Haarbüschel auf dem Analsegment von den weiblichen Käfern, wobei zusätzlich deren Pronotum breiter und deren Flügeldecken signifikant länger sind als diejenigen der Männchen. S. laevis‐Männchen und ‐Weibchen sind gleich groß, aber signifikant kleiner als S. scolytus.   • Oncogenic and Tumor Suppressor Functions for Lymphoid Enhancer Factor 1 in E2a-/- T Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia

    • T lymphocyte acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is a heterogeneous disease affecting T cells at multiple stages of their development and is characterized by frequent genomic alterations. The transcription factor LEF1 is inactivated through mutation in a subset of T-ALL cases but elevated LEF1 expression and activating mutations have also been identified in this disease. Here we show, in a murine model of T-ALL arising due to E2a inactivation, that the developmental timing of Lef1 mutation impacts its ability to function as a cooperative tumor suppressor or oncogene. T cell transformation in the presence of LEF1 allows leukemic cells to become addicted to its presence. In contrast, deletion prior to transformation both accelerates leukemogenesis and results in leukemic cells with altered expression of genes controlling receptor-signaling pathways. Our data demonstrate that the developmental timing of Lef1 mutations impact its apparent oncogenic or tumor suppressive characteristics and demonstrate the utility of mouse models for understanding the cooperation and consequence of mutational order in leukemogenesis.

  • Chronic Pain One to Five Years after Heart Transplantation

    • PURPOSE: We know that pain has far-reaching detrimental effects across various life-domains and also affects health related quality of life after solid organ transplantation. However, the extent to which heart recipients experience chronic bodily pain in the years after heart transplantation is a neglected field. Pain is reported to be a major problem after other types of solid organ transplantation. Neither the prevalence nor consequences of chronic pain after heart transplantation have been fully explored or understood. Therefore, the aim was to present a multidimensional assessment of self-reported pain one to five years after heart transplantation and its relationship with transplant specific well-being. METHODS: This nationwide, cross-sectional cohort study is part of the Self-management after thoracic transplantation study. A total of 79 heart recipients, who were due for their annual follow-up at one (n=28), two (n=17), three (n=11), four (n=17) and five years (n=5) after heart transplantation were included. We used three instruments; the Pain-O-Meter (POM), which provides information about pain intensity, sensation, location and duration and the Organ Transplant Symptom and Wellbeing Instrument (OTSWI) and the Psychological General Wellbeing Instrument. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of pain was 57% after 1 year, 76 % after 2 years, 73 % after 3 years, 35 % after 4 years and 50 % after 5 years. Women experienced higher pain intensity than men. The three most common pain locations were feet, back and legs. Heart recipients with pain reported lower transplant specific and psychological well-being as well as higher symptom distress from other symptoms than pain. Those who was back to work reported less pain than those not working. Heart recipients with high general fatigue reported more pain than those less fatigued and there was a relationship between general fatigue, physical fatigue, reduced activity and total pain intensity score. The more fatigue the more pain. CONCLUSION: Chronic bodily pain up to 5 years after heart transplantation reduces perceived well-being. Heart recipients with pain report higher symptom distress than those without pain. Screening for pain, especially among female heart recipients should be mandatory.

The chapter also provides useful advices in intervieweing suspects who show symptoms of various types of personality disorders.

    • The aim of this study is to examine how the options for producing electricity, fuels, and heat in a carbon constrained world affect cost-effective fuels and propulsion technologies in the transportation sector. GET 7.0, a global energy system model with five end-use sectors, is used for the analysis. We find that an energy system dominated by either solar thermal energy or nuclear power tends to make biofuels in plug-in hybrids cost-effective. If coal with carbon capture and storage dominates the energy system, hydrogen cars, rather than plug-in hybrids tends to become cost-effective. From a Monte Carlo analysis we conclude that the stationary energy system does not alone determine how the transportation sector develops, but that its impact on the absolute and the relative cost of energy carriers has a significant impact on the cost-effectiveness of different propulsion technologies. Thus, analyses of future energy carriers and propulsion technologies need to consider developments in the stationary energy sector.

  • Application of chemical oxidation processes for the removal of pharmaceuticals in biologically treated wastewater

    • The discharge of effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is considered to be the major source of residual pharmaceuticals frequently found in aquatic environments. The complex nature of such compounds tends to make conventional biological treatments aimed at their removal ineffective. The present thesis concerns the removal of 62 different active pharmaceutical ingredients commonly detected in Swedish wastewater effluents by means of chemical oxidation techniques. Techniques with potential to be effective are in particular peracetic acid (PAA), chlorine dioxide (ClO2), ozone (O3) and a combination of ozone and hydrogen peroxide (O3/H2O2), which all were included in this study. The performance of a given treatment was evaluated in terms of the degree of pharmaceutical removal achieved and the oxidant demand of the wastewater. The effects of the characteristics of the wastewater have on the degree of removal efficiency of different pharmaceuticals were also evaluated. Ozone is considered to be the most efficient chemical oxidant for reducing the concentrations of a large number of different pharmaceuticals, the ozone dose required for this being fairly low (5-10 mg/L), depending upon the characteristics of the effluent. Over 90% of the pharmaceuticals investigated in most of the effluents could be eliminated to 90-100% by use of ozone, while several of the pharmaceuticals being observed to be recalcitrant to chlorine dioxide treatment. The addition of small amounts of hydrogen peroxide during wastewater ozonation, although not enhancing the removal of pharmaceuticals, was found to increase ozone decomposition, presumably resulting in the formation of hydroxyl (OH) radicals as secondary oxidants. The addition of small amounts of H2O2 in this way is seen as being advantageous in terms of its reducing both the treatment time and the reaction tank volume which is needed. Of the various water quality parameters investigated, the organic carbon content was found to have a particularly strong effect on the removal of pharmaceuticals, due to its competitive behavior towards the oxidant. PAA appears to have the lowest degree of pharmaceutical removal, making it not a suitable treatment option for removing pharmaceuticals in the effluents. Although chlorine dioxide and ozone appeared quite similar in their manner of removing pharmaceuticals, both of them reacting with electron-rich functional groups such as those of the phenolic and amino type, some of the pharmaceuticals reacted more slowly with chlorine dioxide than with ozone, given the same reactive substituent and structural similarities. Thus, a decision regarding the possible use of chlorine dioxide for tertiary treatment should take account of how strongly the pollutant or pollutants in question are affected by it. The use of chlorine dioxide appeared to be particularly beneficial when a small-scale WWTP is involved or when treatment is required for only a limited period of time. Although ClO2 is slightly more expensive to produce than ozone, the preparation system and the reaction chamber for treatment that are required are far simpler and less expensive to build than those needed for ozone treatment. It was noted that energy costs connected with ozonation are a function both of the ozone demand of the wastewater and the contaminant or contaminants to be removed. It appeared that, in view of the high degree of reactivity of ozone to a broad range of the pharmaceuticals that were investigated, ozonation of secondary effluent is the most suitable alternative for most WWTPs.
