  • Making interactive TV easier to use : Interface design for a second screen approach
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The Design Journal. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1460-6925 .- 1756-3062. ; 10:3, s. 41-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interactive television (iTV) has the potential to revolutionize the way we consume broadcast media, but users still find both the notion of iTV and the services currently available problematic. This paper describes a project that investigates a representative group of users' aspirations, and barriers to iTV service engagement in the UK. This primary research informed the development of new User Interface (UI) and service solutions that addressed these barriers. Specifically, a second screen solution was developed to remove the need for iTV services to use on-screen graphics, dramatically improving the possibilities for effective interaction and navigation for iTV interfaces and services. The effectiveness of these solutions was evaluated through the testing of these new iTV services in a representative group of family homes.

  • The Lancaster Care Charter
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Design Issues. - : MIT Press - Journals. - 0747-9360 .- 1531-4790. ; 35:1, s. 73-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the fall of 1991 the Munich Design Charter was published in Design Issues. This charter was written as a design-led “call to arms” on the future nations and boundaries of Europe. The signatories of the Munich Design Charter saw the problem of Europe, at that time, as fundamentally a problem of form that should draw on the creativity and expertise of design. Likewise, the Does Design Care…? workshop held at Imagination, Lancaster University in the autumn of 2017 brought together a multidisciplinary group of people from 16 nations across 5 continents, who, at a critical moment in design discourse saw a problem with the future of Care. The Lancaster Care Charter has been written in response to the vital question “Does Design Care…?” and via a series of conversations, stimulated by a range of presentations that explored a range of provocations, insights and more questions, provides answers for the contemporary context of Care. With nation and boundary now erased by the flow of Capital the Charter aims to address the complex and urgent challenges for Care as both the future possible and the responsibility of design. The Lancaster Care Charter presents a collective vision and sets out new pragmatic encounters for the design of Care and the care of Design.

  • Bringing the television experience to other media in the home : An ethnographic study
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: EuroITV'09 - Proceedings of the 7th European Conference on European Interactive Television Conference. - New York : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781605583402 ; , s. 201-210
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we report on a study conducted in 2007 and 2008 looking at the media use habits of 27 families in the Greater London area. The project builds on previous ethnographic work studying media use within a similar group in 2006. The study investigated attitudes towards different types of media and the role Television (TV) currently plays and could play within the home environment. Following a participatory design methodology, we rapidly prototyped an experimental home media device and asked participants and use and respond to it. We explored the issues such as interactional simplicity and sharing media using a TV using the experimental device as a focal point for discussion and the generation of new ideas.

  • Interacting with digital media at home via a second screen
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings ISM Workshops 2007 9th IEEE International Symposium on Multimedia - Workshops. - Washington, DC : IEEE Computer Society. - 9780769530840 ; , s. 201-206
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interacting with digital media is at the epicentre of every household. In recent years Interactive Television (iTV) has become a household technology on a global scale. However, iTV is still a new technology in the early stages of its evolution. Our previous research looked at how everyday users of iTV feel about the interactive part of iTV. In a series of studies we investigated how people use iTV services; their likes, dislikes, preferences and opinions. We then developed a second screen-based prototype device in response to these findings and tested it with iTV users in their own homes. This is a work in progress paper that outlines the work carried previously in the area of controlling interactive Television via a second screen. The positive user responses led us to extend the scope of our previous research to look into other related areas such as barriers to digital interactive media and personalisation of digital interactive media at home. The paper is organised into three sections. The first section presents the main aims and objectives of our previous and current research work. The second section provides an outline of our previous research methodology, prototype systems and results. The third section provides the reader with information on the progress of our research endeavours upto-date and discusses some of the main findings of the first user study conducted thus far.

  • Investigating media use and the television user experience in the home
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Entertainment Computing. - : Elsevier. - 1875-9521 .- 1875-953X. ; 2:3, s. 151-161
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we report on a study conducted in 2007 and 2008 looking at the media use habits of 27 families in the Greater London area. The project builds on previous work studying media use within a similar group in 2006. The study investigated attitudes towards different types of media and the role television (TV) currently plays and could play within the home environment. To facilitate the study we rapidly prototyped an experimental home media device and asked participants to use and respond to it. We explored issues of interactional simplicity and sharing media using a TV and employed the experimental device as a focal point for discussion and the generation of new ideas. Our key findings indicate a strong desire for services which support media presentation and consumption through the TV (combined with a suitable control device) and cater for social interaction within the home such as sharing photos and videos with other household members. In addition we found a strong user preference for services that offer fast and immediate access to specialised online activities, such as quick checks of e-mail accounts and social networking services.

  • Investigating pay-as-you-go to address issues of trust, privacy and security around media use at home
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Universal Access in the Information Society. - : Springer. - 1615-5289 .- 1615-5297. ; 12:2, s. 217-231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores the use of a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) concept as a means of addressing issues of trust, privacy, billing and security around media in the home. The findings are based on a study conducted in 2007 and 2008, looking at the media-use habits of 27 families in the Greater London area. The study investigated attitudes towards uses of various forms of media within the home environment, with a particular emphasis on television (TV). To facilitate the study, a rapid prototype of an experimental home media device was produced, asking participants to use and respond to it. The key findings show the desirability of devices and services that incorporate a payment system which would help in regulating spending and allow household members to manage their own media purchases. The PAYG concept was well received by study participants as a means to prevent unauthorised spending and help manage costs. Participants were also enthusiastic about more transparent billing mechanisms and the possibility of monitoring the TV and media use of younger household members.
