  • Changes in participation patterns of youth with physical disabilities following the Pathways and Resources for Engagement and Participation intervention: A time-geography approach
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1103-8128 .- 1651-2014. ; 27:5, s. 364-372
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The PREP (Pathways and Resources for Engagement and Participation), an innovative 12-week occupational therapy intervention that focuses on changing the environment, was found effective in improving the participation of youth in specific chosen community-based activities. Objective: To complement existing evidence, this study explored changes in overall participation patterns of youth with physical disabilities following the PREP intervention. Methods: Guided by time-geography approach, 13 youth aged 12-17 completed a 24-hr diary using the Aday app during one typical weekday and another day during the weekend, pre- and post-intervention. Data of 50 diaries were plotted and analyzed using the VISUALTimePAcTS program. Results: Following the PREP, youth were engaged in less digital media and more in study-related activities. Number of occurrences and time spent doing activities with friends were greater post-intervention, whereas time spent doing activities at home was quite similar, particularly during the weekdays. During the weekends, however, youth spent slightly less time at home. Conclusions and significance: Findings provide preliminary support for the effectiveness of the PREP, extending beyond the accomplishment of specific targeted activities towards a change in the overall daily patterns of youth. Such knowledge can redirect occupational therapists' attention to environment-focused interventions involving real-life experiences.

  • A diversity of patterns : 10-year trajectories of men and women diagnosed with psychosis for the first time. A time-geographic approach
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Moravian Geographical Reports. - : ACAD SCI CZECH REPUBLIC, INST GEONICS. - 1210-8812 .- 2199-6202. ; 28:4, s. 283-298
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • People with severe mental illness face a different 'interventional' landscape compared to some decades ago, when mental hospitals were dominant, in Sweden as well as in the rest of the Western world. The aim of the research reported in this article was to follow men and women diagnosed with psychosis for the first time over a 10-year period, and to explore what interventions they experienced. The interventions, here defined as "spheres", were either community-based or institutional. A third sphere represents no interventions. Based on data from registers and using a time-geographic approach, the individuals were visualised as 10-year trajectories where their transitions between the different spheres were highlighted. The results show a great diversity of trajectories. Two main categories were detected: two-spheres (community-based and no interventions) and three-spheres (adding institutional interventions). One third of the population experienced only community-based interventions, with a higher proportion of men than women. Consequently, more women had institutional experience. Two sub-categories reveal trajectories not being in the interventional sphere in a stepwise manner before the 10th year, and long-term trajectories with interventions in the 10th year. The most common pattern was long-term trajectories, embracing about half of the population, while one-fifth left the institutional sphere before the 5th year.

  • A longitudinal study of men and women diagnosed with psychosis : trajectories revealing interventions in a time-geographic framework
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: GeoJournal. - : Springer. - 0343-2521 .- 1572-9893. ; 87:4, s. 2423-2440
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The living conditions for persons with severe mental illness have undergone substantial change in Sweden as well as in the rest of the Western world due to the downsizing of inpatient care and the development of community-based interventions. However, there is a lack of knowledge concerning the “trajectories of interventions” in this new, fragmented, institutional landscape. The aim of the study was to explore types of interventions and when they occur in a 10-year follow-up of 437 women and men diagnosed with psychosis for the first time. Based on registers and using a timegeographic visualization method, the results showed a great diversity of trajectories and differences between sexes. The aggregate picture revealed that over the 10-year period there were considerable periods with no interventions for both men and women. Furthermore, institutional interventions more commonly occurred among women but appeared for longer periods among men. Community-based interventions declined among women and increased among men during the period.

  • Mobility modeling for transport efficiency : Analysis of travel characteristics based on mobile phone data
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Netmob 2013.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Signaling data from the cellular networks can provide a means of analyzing the efficiency of a deployed transportation system and assisting in the formulation of transport models to predict its future use. An approach based on this type of data can be especially appealing for transportation systems that need massive expansions, since it has the added benefit that no specialized equipment or installations are required, hence it can be very cost efficient.Within this context in this paper we describe how such obtained data can be processed and used in order to act as enablers for traditional transportation analysis models. We outline a layered, modular architectural framework that encompasses the entire process and present results from initial analysis of mobile phone call data in the context of mobility, transport and transport infrastructure. We finally introduce the Mobility Analytics Platform, developed by Ericsson Research, tailored for mobility analysis, and discuss techniques for analyzing transport supply and demand, and give indication on how cell phone use data can be used directly to analyze the status and use of the current transport infrastructure.

• The situational conditions of suicide in transit environments : An analysis using CCTV footage
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Transport & Health. - : Elsevier BV. - 2214-1405 .- 2214-1413. ; 20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: We explore the use of CCTV footage to map suicidal self-injurious behavior on a subway platform to better understand the settings and the situational conditions of individuals just before they attempt suicide. Methods: We use footage from CCTV cameras for gaining new insight into the situational conditions that relate to suicidal self-directed violence in the transit system in Stockholm, Sweden. We adopt a space-time budget template to record, step-by-step, what happens over time as individuals on the platform wait for an incoming train. The analysis applies visualization tools (VISUAL-TimePAcTS) and uses a cross-over design to identify risk factors associated with suicide. Results: Findings show that suicide risk varies both temporally and spatially. Among all types of possible behaviors and places, being close to the edge of the platform of the opposite direction of the train and crossing the security line – this behavior and place combined – are associated with increased risk of suicide. Conclusions: We confirm that using CCTV footage as data source provides valuable insight into relevant situational conditions in which suicides take place, which can be useful to inform prevention strategies, particularly information about behavior and place combined. The article concludes by reflecting upon the importance of these results for future research.

  • Women’s Mobility and the Situational Conditions of Rape : Cases Reported to Hospitals
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Interpersonal Violence. - : Sage Publications. - 0886-2605 .- 1552-6518. ; 35:15-16, s. 2917-2946
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A third of all rapes in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, take place in public outdoor places. Yet, little is known about the events that precede this type of sexual offence and less about the situational context of rape. This study aims to improve the understanding of the nature of situational conditions that immediately precede events of rape. Using medical records of 147 rape victims during 2012 and 2013, we constructed time- and place-specific records of the places women traveled through or spent time at, the activities they engaged in, and the people they interacted with sequentially over the course of the day when they were raped. The analysis uses visualization tools (VISUAL-TimePAcTS), Geographical Information Systems, and conditional logistic regression to identify place-, context-, and social interaction–related factors associated with the onset of rape. Results for this sample of cases reported to hospitals show that being outdoors was not necessarily riskier for women when compared with indoor public settings; some outdoor environments were actually protective, such as streets. Being in a risky social context and engaging in a risky activity before the event was associated with an increased risk of rape, and the risk escalated over the day. Among those women who never drank alcohol, the results were similar to what was observed in the overall sample, which suggests that risky social interaction and risky activity made independent contributions to the risk of rape. The article finishes with suggestions for rape prevention.

  • A Model for Types and Levels of Automation in Visual Analytics: A Survey, a Taxonomy, and Examples
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. - : IEEE COMPUTER SOC. - 1077-2626 .- 1941-0506. ; 29:8, s. 3550-3568
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The continuous growth in availability and access to data presents a major challenge to the human analyst. As the manual analysis of large and complex datasets is nowadays practically impossible, the need for assisting tools that can automate the analysis process while keeping the human analyst in the loop is imperative. A large and growing body of literature recognizes the crucial role of automation in Visual Analytics and suggests that automation is among the most important constituents for effective Visual Analytics systems. Today, however, there is no appropriate taxonomy nor terminology for assessing the extent of automation in a Visual Analytics system. In this article, we aim to address this gap by introducing a model of levels of automation tailored for the Visual Analytics domain. The consistent terminology of the proposed taxonomy could provide a ground for users/readers/reviewers to describe and compare automation in Visual Analytics systems. Our taxonomy is grounded on a combination of several existing and well-established taxonomies of levels of automation in the human-machine interaction domain and relevant models within the visual analytics field. To exemplify the proposed taxonomy, we selected a set of existing systems from the event-sequence analytics domain and mapped the automation of their visual analytics process stages against the automation levels in our taxonomy.

  • Appliances Facilitating Everyday Life - Electricity Use Derived from Daily Activities
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceeding from the World Renewable Energy Congress - Sweden, 8-13 May, 2011. - : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 9789173930703 ; , s. 1031-1038
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to present how, using a visualization method, electricity use can be derived from the everyday activity patterns of household members. Target groups are, on the one hand, professionals in the energy sector and energy advisors who need more knowledge about household energy use, and, on the other hand, household members wanting to reduce the energy use by revealing their own habits and thereby finding out how changed activity performance may influence electricity use. The focus is on the relation between utilizing electric appliances to perform everyday life activities and the use of electricity. The visualization method is based on the time-geographic approach developed by Hägerstrand and includes a model that estimates appliance electricity use from household members’ activities. Focus, in this paper, is put on some basic activities performed to satisfy daily life needs: cooking and use of information, communication and entertainment devices. These activities appear frequently in the everyday life of households, even though not all household members perform them all. The method is applied on a data material comprising time-diaries written by 463 individuals (aged 10 to 85+) in 179 households in different parts of Sweden. The visualization method reveals when and for how long activities that claim electric appliances are performed by which individual(s). It also shows electricity load curves generated from the use of appliances at different levels, such as individual, household and group or population levels. At household level the method can reveal which household members are the main users of electricity, i.e. the division of labour between household members. Thereby it also informs about whom could be approached by energy companies and energy advisors in information campaigns. The main result of the study is that systematic differences in activity patterns in subgroups of a population can be identified (e.g. men and women) but that directed information based on these patterns has to be made with care and with the risk of making too broad generalizations.
