  • Sequential changes in hematologic and biochemical parameters in African tick bite fever.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Clin Microbiol Infect. - : Elsevier BV. - 1198-743X. ; 9, s. 678-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sequential changes and to estimate the frequencies of abnormalities in some commonly measured biological variables in patients with African tick bite fever (ATBF), an emerging spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiosis in international travelers to rural sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: A study was done of hemoglobin, total leukocyte count, absolute lymphocyte count, blood platelet count and serum levels of C-reactive protein (S-CRP), alanine aminotransferase (S-ALAT), aspartate aminotransferase, lactic dehydrogenase, gamma-glutamyl transferase, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin, sodium and creatinine during the first two weeks of illness and prior to the institution of antirickettsial therapy in 108 patients with travel-associated ATBF. RESULTS: There were significant falls in mean total leukocyte count, mean absolute lymphocyte count, and mean platelet count, and significant increases in mean S-CRP and S-ALAT. During the first ten days of illness, elevated S-CRP, lymphopenia and elevated S-ALAT were detected in 91.7%, 73.3% and 40.7% of patients, respectively. Most abnormalities were mild. For 55 patients who underwent both S-CRP and absolute lymphocyte count determination, at least one parameter was abnormal in 52 (94.5%) patients. CONCLUSIONS: The sequential changes in many biological parameters during the acute phase of ATBF mimic those reported in other SFG rickettsioses. Mild abnormalities are frequent, with increased S-CRP and lymphopenia being the two most consistent findings

  • Degradation of polyethylene during extrusion. II. Degradation of low-density polyethylene, linear low-density polyethylene, and high-density polyethylene in film extrusion
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Polymer Science. - : Wiley. - 1097-4628 .- 0021-8995. ; 91:3, s. 1525-1537
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The degradation of different polyethylenes-low-density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE)-with and without antioxidants and at different oxygen concentrations in the polymer granulates, have been studied in extrusion coating processing. The degradation was followed by online rheometry, size exclusion chromatography, surface oxidation index measurements, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The degradations start in the extruder where primary radicals are formed, which are subject to the auto-oxidation when oxygen is present. In the extruder, crosslinking or chain scissions reactions are dominating at low and high melt temperatures, respectively, for LDPE, and chain scission is overall dominating for the more linear LLDPE and HDPE resins. Additives such as antioxidants react with primary radicals formed in the melt. Degradation taking place in the film between the die orifice, and the quenching point is mainly related to the exposure time to air oxygen. Melt temperatures above 280degreesC give a dominating surface oxidation, which increases with the exposure time to air between die orifice and quenching too. A number of degradation products were identified-for example, alclehydes and organic acids-which were present in homologous series. The total amount of aldehydes and acids for each number of chain carbon atoms were appeared in the order of C5>C4>C6>C7much greater thanC2 for LDPE, C5>C6>C4> C7much greater thanC2 for LLDPE, and C5>C6>C7>C4much greater thanC2 for HDPE. The total amounts of oxidized compounds presented in the films were related to the processing conditions. Polymer melts exposed to oxygen at the highest temperatures and longest times showed the presence dialdehydes, in addition to the aldehydes and acids. (C) 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. • Tissue response to commercial silicone and polyurethane elastomers after different sterilization procedures
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Biomaterials. - : Elsevier BV. - 1878-5905 .- 0142-9612. ; 17:23, s. 2265-2272
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two different commercial polymeric materials, a silicone and a polyurethane (PUR), were studied with regard to correlations between the chemical and physical compositions of the polymer surfaces and the biological response on implantation. Test specimens of the materials were manufactured according to standard procedures. The specimens were implanted in rats for 10 and 90 days. Before implantation the polymers were sterilized in three different ways, namely, beta irradiation, ethylene oxide sterilization and steam sterilization. The polymers were characterized before and after the implantation with respect to the chemical composition and the morphology of the surfaces. After implantation the biological response was evaluated by counting numbers of macrophages, giant cells, fibroblasts and other cells present at the surfaces. The thickness of the fibrous capsule surrounding the test specimens was measured at the thickest and thinnest parts. PUR surfaces showed signs of degradation already after sterilization and after 10 to 90 days of implantation, pits and cracks appeared, especially in the ethylene oxide sterilized samples. However, differences in the biological responses were small and independent of the sterilization method. After 10 days of implantation the capsule thickness and the amounts of cell material adhering at the surfaces were different, and it appears that the silicone rubber induces more tissue response than PUR. The differences in the early tissue response evened out after 90 days implantation time and a steady state situation evolved, which was similar for the silicone and the polyurethane.
