  • Socioculturally-informed Interaction Analysis (SIA): Methodology and theoretical and empirical contributions of an emerging research program in early childhood education
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Research in Early Childhood Education. - 1838-0689. ; 12:1, s. 1-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Over the last decade, a Swedish research group has conducted several empirical studiesin the field of Early Childhood Education (ECE). These studies are examples of what is sometimes referred to as practice-based studies, and they are often conducted in collaboration with ECE personnel. In this meta-study, we review 37 publications from the research group to highlight key contributions in terms of methodological issues or challenges identified,as well as empirical findings and theoretical developments. We argue that these studies constitute an emerging research program, termed Socioculturally-informed Interaction Analysis(SIA). Key aspects of SIA are:examining learning as a process, using recordings to avoid bias, considering pragmatic validity when working with transcriptions, making claims closely aligned with what is studied (ecological validity), and viewing context as an analytical rather than as a descriptive concept, and generalising at a conceptual level, which affords empirical generalisation.

  • Peripheral infusion of insulin-like growth factor-I increases the number of newborn oligodendrocytes in the cerebral cortex of adult hypophysectomized rats.
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Endocrinology. - : The Endocrine Society. - 0013-7227 .- 1945-7170. ; 148:8, s. 3765-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have previously shown that recombinant human (rh) IGF-I induces cell proliferation and neurogenesis in the hippocampus of hypophysectomized rats. In the current investigation, we determined the effects of rhIGF-I on proliferation and differentiation in the cerebral cortex. Adult hypophysectomized rats were injected with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) to label newborn cells (once a day for the first 5 d), and rhIGF-I was administered peripherally for 6 or 20 d. In the cerebral cortex, the number of BrdU-labeled cells increased after 20 d but not after 6 d of rhIGF-I infusion. This suggests that rhIGF-I enhances the survival of newborn cells in the cerebral cortex. Using BrdU labeling combined with the oligodendrocyte-specific markers myelin basic protein and 2',3'-cyclic nucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase, we demonstrated an increase in oligodendrogenesis in the cerebral cortex. The total amount of myelin basic protein and 2',3'-cyclic nucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase was also increased on Western blots of homogenates of the cerebral cortex, confirming the immunohistochemical findings. Also, we observed an increase in the number of capillary-associated BrdU-positive cells, although total capillary area was not increased. rhIGF-I treatment did not affect cortical astrogliogenesis and neurogenesis was not observed. The ability of rhIGF-I to induce cortical oligodendrogenesis may have implications for the regenerative potential of the cortex.

  • A qualitative study of older persons’ experiences of getting individual support with digital needs in the context of home ID 281
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: The first Global Conference on Person-Centred Care. - : University of Gothenburg Centre for Person-Centred Care. - 9789153106708 ; , s. 216-216
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Digitalization is seen as a necessity to manage the increasing burden on the health care system and is accordingly considered an important tool in the transformation to integrated care (Swedish Nära vård). However, when health care is digitalized older persons are at increased risk of being marginalized and dependent on others due to their generally lower digital competence. To address this, several Swedish municipalities offer individual support to older persons in their own home, a service called Digital Coach (DC). As this service is new, the aim is to describe older persons’ experiences of getting individual support with digital needs in the context of home. Method: Semi-structured interviews (n=14) were conducted with older persons who have had DC support in their home. The focus was on older persons’ experiences of the support. Data was analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Results, preliminary: The overall theme, to be a valued person in the digital society, represents a feeling of being taken seriously and worth investing resources in to gain access to society. Three categories emerged: (1) The need to keep up with the times which means to understand and navigate the new digital landscape with the opportunity for independence and participation, (2) Support and respect in the learning situation, is crucial for feeling comfortable to expose insufficient knowledge, and (3) Increased digital competence empowers autonomy and is manifested as the ability to handle the digital tools and services by your own creates a feeling of joy and satisfaction and increases the opportunity to participate in both social and community activities. Conclusion: The result shows that individual support with digital needs in the context of home increase digital competence in older persons and create feelings of being valued and included in the digital society, which can extend to integrated person-centered care.

  • Exploring Coopetition : When partners start to compete
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper explores the concept of coopetition by addressing a situation when business partners start to compete. Specifically, it intends to understand why firms move from cooperation to competition. To achieve this, case studies based on the development of an IT-solution for urban mobility in Brazil are undertaken. The cases show local and foreign MNEs interactions during and after the project. The findings suggest that the higher the level of interdependence, the higher likelihood of developing a cooperative strategy. In contrast, the lower the level of interdependency, the higher is the degree of competition; meaning that partners will choose a competitive strategy instead.

  • The cooperation-competition interplay in the ICT industry
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of business & industrial marketing. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0885-8624 .- 2052-1189. ; 33:4, s. 495-505
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Building on a business network perspective, the paper addresses the following question: Why do firms move between cooperation and competition in the context of high-tech industry? Hence, the purpose of this study is to contribute to the understanding of the complex cooperation–competition interplay between actors in a business network.Design/methodology/approach: A single case study within the information and communication technology industry is undertaken and illustrates the cooperation–competition interplay in projects of technology.Findings: The authors discuss the implications of interdependence on relationship dynamics. The main argument is that business relationships survive despite periods of competition if interdependence is high. Thus, firms move between a state of cooperation and a state of competition within business relationships, rather than ending the relationships when starting to compete.Practical implications: This study suggests that managers need to pay attention to how different degrees of interdependence lead firms to be embedded in cooperative or competitive forms of relationships.Originality/value: The paper contributes to the ongoing debate about cooperation, competition and coopetition within international business and industrial marketing literature. An interesting aspect in the paper is the cooperation–competition interplay, which is associated with positioning. A centrally positioned actor will choose who to bring into the partnership, with positioning concomitantly changing from project to project. The willingness of being a central actor, i.e. a project leader, places traditional buyer–supplier partners in competition. Thus, cooperation and/or competition becomes contextual.

  • The Interplay between Cooperation and Competition in Business Network : The Case of Ericsson in Brazil
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When studying firms inbusiness networks, researchers have tended to focus on aspects of cooperation, while competition has been less examined. One exception is the concept of coopetition, which has been explored in order to take competitive aspects of business networks into account. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the network approach literature by addressing the concept of competition, as well as interactive outcomes of competition, i.e. cooperation andcoopetition. Specifically, the paper aims to understand why firms move from cooperation to competitionin the context of the IT (information technology) industry in an emerging economy such as Brazil. To accomplish this, we conduct a case study of two different relationships where cooperation turns to competition. The case is based on the development of an IT solution for public transportation in which local and foreign MNCs interact during and after the project. The preliminary findings suggest that the higher the level of complementarity or interdependence, the higher likelihood of developing a more cooperative strategy. In contrast, the lower the level of interdependency, the higher the degree of competition:meaning that partners will choose a competitive strategy instead.

  • "It is like living in a diminishing world" : older persons' experiences of living with long-term health problems - prior to the STRENGTH intervention
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 15:1, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Ageing is often associated with multiple long-term health problems influencing older persons' well-being in daily living. It is not unusual that the point of interest in research is often on the management of the actual health problem instead of being holistic and person-centred.Purpose: To describe the phenomenon of living with long-term health problems that influence daily living, from the older persons' perspective. Methods: Qualitative individual interviews were conducted with 34 older persons living with long-term health problems. The data were analysed using a Reflected Lifeworld Research (RLR) approach, grounded in phenomenology. Results: Life with long-term health problems entails living in a diminishing world. It entails living in uncertainty, not being able to trust one's own ability. The freedom to make decisions of your own is deprived by relatives and health-care providers. Living with long-term health problems entails being dependent on support in daily life and a strive to maintain meaningfulness in daily living. Conclusions: The results address a need for extended individual and holistic guidance and support in living with long-term health problems to increase the older person's sense of well-being and meaning in life.

  • Older persons’ experiences of Reflective STRENGTH-Giving Dialogues – ‘It's a push to move forward’
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 35:3, s. 779-787
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rationale: Experiences of the innovative method Reflective STRENGTH-Giving Dialogue (STRENGTH), which is grounded in a lifeworld perspective and developed to improve quality of care, is described in this study. Innovative thinking in developing health and social care, which may include digital solutions, is required to ensure a meaningful and dignified life in old age. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe experiences of the intervention Reflective STRENGTH-Giving Dialogue from the perspective of older persons living with long-term health problems. Method: Individual qualitative interviews were conducted with 27 older persons who participated in the intervention. The older persons wrote notes from each dialogue in booklets, and the booklets became part of the study data, analysed with a Reflective Lifeworld Research approach. Results: STRENGTH is experienced as an opportunity to reflect upon life and identify small and large life projects. Dialogues that lead to change in thoughts and actions influence the older persons' well-being, sense of balance, joy and meaning in life. There is an experience of STRENGTH as a starting point and a push to move forward in an effort to experience joy and meaning in life when living with long-term health problems. Conclusions: STRENGTH has the potential to contribute to quality improvement in person-centred care and enhance meaning in life for older persons living with long-term health problems. However, the use of a digital tool in this particular context poses challenges that must be considered.

  • Striving for meaning in a diminishing world : Older persons’ experiences of reflective STRENGTH-giving dialogues including a digital tool
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Reflective STRENGTH-Giving Dialogue (STRENGTH) method was developed, grounded in a lifeworld perspective, with a focus on identifying and meeting older persons’ needs for the promotion of health and well-being. In this thesis, STRENGTH, including the digital tool SelfSTRENGTH, was tested in the context of community-dwelling older persons living with long-term health problems. The overall aim was to describe how life with long-term health problems is experienced and influenced by the Reflective STRENGTH-Giving Dialogue intervention, including the SelfSTRENGTH app, by community-dwelling older persons. The research was conducted based on a reflective lifeworld approach, through qualitative and quantitative method studies. Three of the studies had a qualitative, descriptive, and inductive design based on individual interviews and reflection notes with the older persons in the intervention group (Papers I–III). Analysis was conducted using phenomenology (Papers I–II), and phenomenography (Paper III). One study had a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest no-treatment control group design (Paper IV), and was analyzed using nonparametric paired statistics. Altogether, 60 older persons in the fourth age participated in the studies. The finding showed, according to self-reports, that STRENGTH immediately and significantly reduced the impact of health problems on daily life, and increased well-being after each single dialogue. The content and outcome of the dialogues are affected by intersubjectivity, which is influenced by the healthcare professional (HCP) and the older person’s ability, as well as the relationship between them. STRENGTH dialogues that have an existential dimension are described as a starting point to provide a “push” toward joy and meaning. When the understanding of an older person’s holistic situation, including the past, present, and future, is tactfully and sensitively challenged with reflection and an emphasis on possibilities, the dialogues support joy and meaning in life. Dialogues of this nature have been lacking, as older persons may choose not to have that conversation with their family or HCPs, and HCPs may not attend to the older person’s existential needs and concerns. It is important when living in the feeling of a diminishing world for older persons to be involved in decisions that concern their lives and care, and to engage in life projects that improve well-being. This is made possible through the dialogues and use of the SelfSTRENGTH app. However, use of the app is hindered by resistance to digital technology and the occurrence of health problems. To foster healthy ageing, HCPs need increased knowledge and favorable conditions for caring conversations and provision of digital support that older persons with long-term health problems need for participation in a digital society.
