  • Social Entrepreneurship and Influence on Regional Firm Demography
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The central interest of this thesis is the emergence of social  ventures. In this regard, it investigates two types of questions: what regional factors influence the emergence of social  ventures? and what  types of interaction may emerge between the emergence of social  ventures and the demography (entry,  exit  and migration) of commercial ventures in a region? The thesis also aims to adopt a macro-oriented approach to studying the research questions. To  answer  those  questions, this  thesis  applies  both  theoretical  and empirical  analysis.  For the theoretical analysis, instead of a single theory it applies three middle-range theories: theory of organisational ecology, market failure theory, and the demand and supply theory of  entrepreneurship. The empirical analysis is based on two large-scale databases from  Sweden  and  the U.S. The Swedish database includes nonprofit social ventures and commercial ventures for the 1990-2014 period from all of the 290 municipalities across Sweden, while the database from U.S. includes 88 counties in the State of Ohio between 2003-2007.The answers to the research questions are presented in the form of six papers. Paper 1 provides an overall picture of the different possible functions of social ventures within communities and  their contributions to regional development. With this overall view, Papers 2 and 3 answer the  first  research question, that is the factors influencing the emergence of social ventures. Thus, while  Paper 2 provides a review of previous research, Paper 3 empirically examines some of  the  regional factors that may influence the emergence of social ventures in a region. The  results of Paper 3 revealed that factors such as gender, education, entrepreneurial role models, wealth, unemployment rate, age, and urbanisation positively influence the emergence rate of the of social venture in a region.Papers 4, 5 and 6 are dedicated to answering the second type of research question, in other  words the interaction between the emergence of  social ventures and the demography (entry, exit and migration) of commercial ventures. As such, Paper 4 studies how the emergence of social ventures is influenced by the entry and exit of commercial ventures, Paper 5 investigates how the emergence of social ventures influences the entry of commercial ixventures, and Paper 6 examines how the emergence of social ventures influences the migration of commercial  ventures. In summary, the results of these three papers reveal that while the emergence of social ventures negatively influences the commercial ventures inside a region, it has a positive  influence on the commercial ventures outside the region. Paper 6 further investigates the influence of the emergence of commercial ventures on the migration of commercial ventures.  The results show that while the emergence of social ventures attracts commercial ventures from outside into a region, the emergence of commercial ventures repels them from moving into the region.

  • Corporate Entrepreneurship : A Comprehensive Field Review and Assessment of the Internal Organizational Environment Supportive of Strategic Entrepreneurship
  • 2018
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to expand current knowledge on the development of corporate entrepreneurship and to contribute new theoretical and empirical insights into strategic entrepreneurship. To those ends, the thesis attempts to answer two research questions. First, how has the field of corporate entrepreneurship research evolved in terms of main themes, applied methods and theory, and what do these developments reveal about the future trajectories of the field? Second, what is the relationship between internal organizational factors and strategic entrepreneurship in the form of sustained regeneration, organizational rejuvenation, and strategic renewal? To answer the first question, a systematic and comprehensive review of 344 articles addressing the development of research on corporate entrepreneurship during 1969–2017 was conducted. To answer the second question, a survey was administered at a major financial services company to examine the relationship among four internal organizational factors and three forms of strategic entrepreneurship. The overall conclusion of the literature review is that corporate entrepreneurship is a growing and, in several respects, maturing field of research. Signs of its maturity are undermined, however, by the lack of commonly applied theories and theoretical frameworks. Those findings take support from the overall conclusion of the second study, which highlights the need to develop and further test empirically existing frameworks, constructs, and theoretical connections within literature on strategic entrepreneurship.Taken together, the findings of the thesis suggest that corporate entrepreneurship faces the difficult challenge of developing a set of more distinct, unifying theories and conceptual frameworks. Concerning strategic entrepreneurship, it is concluded that research on this topic should consider specific organizational structures and conditions of the company and, at the same time, it should also develop greater sensitivity to the effects of industry and institutional settings. The findings also highlight that internal organizational factors could have differentiated effects on the main forms of strategic entrepreneurship.

    • Designing courses that support collaboration and individual development is a crucial feature of higher education lifelong learning. This chapter reports a model for course design developed in a project with participants from banks, insurance companies, and one governmental insurance agency. The model aims to go beyond individual competencies by focusing also on organizational development with collaborative features inspired by the Community of Inquiry theoretical framework. Based on the network mode, the course design emphasizes collaborative inquiries between participants that link theoretical ideas to authentic organizational problems. Of particular interest is that the model helps lifelong learners to focus on personal meaning and collaborative application of acquired knowledge for the benefit of their organizations.

  • Ingår i: ICERI2023 Proceedings. - Sevilla, Spain : The International Academy of Technology, Education and Development. - 9788409559428 ; , s. 1543-1550

    • Supplying work-life with a well-educated workforce is important for higher education. This task links to societal challenges such as digitalisation, globalisation, and regulation changes. Nevertheless, even if higher education institutions must educate to avoid competence shortages and match-making problems in work-life, such institutions must collaborate with employers. Higher education institutions and employers can meet up to this challenge by developing work-integrated learning programmes collaboratively. Work-integrated learning approaches integrate theoretical knowledge in the workplace by embracing pedagogical methods and strategies based on a specially designed curriculum. The current study discusses and analyses try-outs of a lifelong and work-integrated learning approach in a Business Administration program. The first stage of the project included developing and designing a preliminary framework, including content and activities and pedagogic principles to be applied in a lifelong and work-integrated learning approach. The preliminary framework embraced the following activities: 1) Exchanges of experiences and knowledge between the university and collaborating organisations, 2) Guest lectures from collaborating organisations, 3) Integration of authentic assignments in terms of a Bring-Your-Own-Data from collaboration organisations, 4) Dissertation work at collaborating organisations, 5) Creating hourly paid posts to combine studies and work, and 6) Mentorship to create opportunities for students to get access to work-life settings during their studies. The second stage included the implementation of the preliminary framework. The third stage evaluated the approach to suggest alterations of the preliminary framework. The paper reports and discusses early preliminary results from the try-outs.

  • Building hybrids between higher education and society : Applying a networked work-integrated learning framework in a business administration program
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Fourteenth International Conference on Networked Learning 2024. - Aalborg : Aalborg University Open Publishing. ; , s. 1-4
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, the changed context for higher education institutions is analysed through the lens of various approaches to collaboration between higher education institutions and society. Three different approaches are discussed: the ivory tower, the factory, and the network. Although these approaches differ, higher education institutions are complex organisations and can embrace a mix of approaches. Nevertheless, depending on the approach applied, this impacts how collaboration between higher education institutions and organisations in society plays out. The study contextualised these approaches in a joint higher education-industry project focusing on developing work-integrated learning (WIL) in a Business Administration program. WIL should embrace practice-based pedagogical methods and strategies by integrating theoretical knowledge in the workplace. To achieve WIL, a network of stakeholders needs to be engaged actively in practice-based activities. The study aimed to report preliminary results from a higher education work-integrated learning project. The following research question was posed: How can higher education institutions, together with organisations in society, apply a networked approach to work-integrated learning? Thus, this paper contributes to knowledge regarding the networked aspects of the design and development of a preliminary framework, including the following themes: Exchanges of experiences and knowledge, Guest lecturers and Bring-Your-Own-Data (BYOD) assignments. These themes manifest a networked WIL framework as a hybrid between higher education and society. First, the networks of experiences and knowledge within academia merge with those of experiences and knowledge in society. Between these two, a hybrid networked work-integrated framework links higher education and society. Second, the same can be said to be true for guest lecturers. Here, guest lecturers became a link between higher education and society and therefore merge the two networks of learning through information and knowledge exchange. Third, BYOD assignments provided further manifestations of a networked WIL framework. Authentic data from the workplace meet the theories of higher education and a hybrid is created. When practice meets theory, they, too, become a link between higher education and society.

  • Higher education lifelong learning initiatives in the tension between organisational and continuous professional development
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Higher education institutions' collaboration with organisations in the surrounding society includes education, research and development initiatives. Such initiatives are often discussed in terms of lifelong learning and should, in an ideal situation, include the continuous professional development of individuals as well as organisational development (2). Such an ideal embraces the dissolving of boundaries between individual and organisational development and the idea that successful continuous professional development should occur at both individual and aggregated levels. Based on a networked mode, higher education institutions are closely linked to their surrounding society, embracing a two-way relationship with a hybrid character, including multiple connections with branches and/or organisations (3). Formal education and informal work-related tasks are blurred and emphasised as equally important (1).This paper aims to analyse and discuss the tensions that occur when higher education lifelong learning initiatives intersect with initiatives for employees' continuous professional development and with organisations' goals. The following research questions are posed: 1) Which tensions between individual and organisational goals emerge when higher education lifelong learning initiatives aimed at providing continuous professional development are implemented? and 2) How can the intersection between employees’ continuous professional development in terms of higher education courses be understood from an organisational perspective? The study is based on a higher education initiative planned and performed in collaboration with eight organisations belonging to an established network of bank and insurance companies. A casestudy-inspired approach was conducted. Data were gathered from professional development courses and embraced conversations with leading representatives of participating organisations, email interviews with teachers, e-mail conversations between teachers and course participants, and course evaluations (open-ended and Likert scale questions). The findings show that while participants in the courses found the courses to contribute to continuous professional development, the organisations did not have the same view. Thus, tensions in the intersection between professional development for individuals and organisations were identified. Bringing organisation-relevant data as input to the courses was identified as a key to providing the establishment of solid links between theoretical perspectives and work-related practices. In focus were collaborative features and the idea of linking theoretical reasoning to authentic organisational problems. The study suggests that a crucial barrier breaker to reduce or eliminate the main barrier is a course on strategically managed professional development for leading representatives of participating organisations. A combined focus on individuals and organisations could also stimulate leading representatives to take a holistic approach to continuous professional development. This includes increased responsibility to ensure that investments in continuous professional development are beneficial for organisations.1.Cremers, et al. (2014). • Towards a Support Model for Work Integrated Professional Development : a first evaluation of the CHIM steps
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: 13th annual International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation. - : The International Academy of Technology, Education and Development. - 9788409242320 ; , s. 64-69
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In our 21st century knowledge society the investment in human resources is an essential activity foralmost all companies. Technology enhanced learning has opened up for new, and more flexible formsof work-integrated learning. Virtual learning environments and online conferencing tools enable a moreindividualized course design with the idea of anytime and anywhere. However, lessons learnt is ifonline learning fails in the inception phase, drop-out rates can be high and pass rates low. The aim ofthis paper is to present and discuss the support of the inception phase of online professionaldevelopment with the idea of emphasizing the CHIM steps. The four steps in this model are:1 Creating a common virtual space,2 Handshake,3 Initial teacher support,4 Mentorship. The research strategy has been the case study approach with 10 course modules in an ongoingprofessional development initiative as case units. Data were collected in a mix of interviews, onlinediscussions and email analyses. Patterns and themes from the various data sources have, after aninitial content analysis been compared according to the case study concept of triangulation.Furthermore, results were grouped into five categories, the four CHIM steps and a fifth miscellaneouscategory.Findings indicate that all the four CHIM steps are important for a successful outcome, and if some ofthe three first steps fail, the fourth will probably fail as well. The recommendation is that universitieshave to rethink the parts of the bureaucracy that are not transmedial, and cannot be carried out onlinewithout traditional face-to-face confirmation. Finally, the CHIM steps concept only involves theinception phase of online learning support and, even if the conclusion is to emphasise the importanceof the initial steps, the important future work is to extend the support model to handle the sustainablelong-term perspective.

  • Negative emotions and consumer behavioural intention to adopt emerging e-banking technology
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Financial Services Marketing. - : Springer Nature. - 1363-0539 .- 1479-1846. ; 28:4, s. 691-704
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Successful implementation of e-banking technology depends on how consumers perceive the technology and how likely they are to adopt it. Although several studies have analysed the impact of some specific negative emotions, few studies examine a broad range of consumers’ negative emotions (i.e. both deterrence and loss emotions) arising from appraisals of e-banking technology. This study investigates the possible relationships between deterrence and loss emotions, and consumers’ behavioural intention to adopt emerging e-banking technology. Based on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology, partial least squares structural equation modelling was used to analyse a conceptual model and related hypotheses. The empirical evidence draws attention to the relationship between loss emotions and consumers’ behavioural intention to adopt emerging e-banking technology through effort expectancy and performance expectancy, respectively.

  • Young consumers’ emotions towards emerging e-banking technology : A multi-perspective approach
  • 2024
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Banks appear to be interested in enhancing their effectiveness and efficiency by developing e-banking technology, i.e., the provision of banking products and services through electronic channels. However, the successful implementation of e-banking technology depends on how consumers perceive such technology and how they are probably provoked to adopt it. Considering emerging e-banking technologies, knowledge of the salient influential factors affecting consumer adoption is crucial for banks. Studies have analysed these factors from different perspectives, such as attribute- and barrier-based perspectives. Attribute-based factors pertain to the perceived or expected characteristics of e-banking technology, whereas barrier-based factors refer to factors that can hinder or delay the adoption of e-banking technology. Despite the absence of consensus on these factors, there is a predominant focus on the functional aspects of this technology, often neglecting the emotional experience of consumers. Consumers’ emotions in the e-banking context mainly refer to hedonic motivation, defined as positive emotions such as fun, pleasure, and enjoyment arising from the usage of e-banking technology. While examining hedonic motivation has provided valuable insights into the adoption of such technology, further studies are required to examine the relationship among consumers’ emotions, particularly negative ones arising from different kinds of appraisals. Accordingly, this thesis aims to examine the influence of consumers’ emotions towards emerging e-banking technology on their intention to adopt such technology, with a specific emphasis on negative emotions from attribute and barrier-based perspectives. Applying Structural equation modelling (SEM), the empirical results draw attention to the influential role of different types of negative emotions in the adoption of emerging e-banking technology. From the attribute-based perspective, the empirical results demonstrate an association between loss emotions and consumers’ behavioural intention to adopt emerging e-banking technology, through effort expectancy and performance expectancy. From a barrier-based perspective, the results indicate that deterrence emotions can be positively associated with consumers’ perceived risk. This, in turn, influences their behavioural intention to adopt emerging e-banking technology. The results also reveal the influence of deterrence emotions on consumers’ perceived risk, even in the presence of positive emotions. These results suggest the importance of considering various categories of negative emotions when examining consumers’ intention to adopt emerging e-banking technology.

  • Auditing Transformation: Regulation, Digitalisation and Sustainability
  • 2023
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book identifies and discusses drivers of auditing transformation, including regulation, digitalisation, sustainability, and individual auditor characteristics. It provides a holistic perspective, discussing these current and highly relevant themes in depth and ‘one by one’ and also stresses the importance of the temporal dimension, i.e. offering a historical and a present-day perspective. The book covers several different theoretical perspectives when analysing and discussing how the various drivers affect auditors, the audit process, accounting firms, stakeholders, and so on. Sweden is used as a setting to study the effects of these drivers of transition. The Swedish experience is generalisable to other European countries, with a Germanic origin currently influenced by Anglo-American ideas of auditing. In addition, Sweden provides a research setting with unique access to empirical data. The monograph is unique in its broad coverage of drivers of transformation, combined with its clear focus on financial auditing. It is informed by a wide range of research approaches, from qualitative interview studies to recently developed machine learning methods. Readers, therefore, benefit from a comprehensive understanding of current changes in the audit industry. The book will be a useful reference work for students of accounting and auditing, as well as for audit practitioners, including both auditors and regulators, and for researchers.

  • 2017
How does education from a high-status university affect professional property appraisers' valuation judgments?" (Bellman, Lind och Öhman, 2016).

    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze the thought patterns of authorized property appraisers (APAs) when valuing commercial properties, and draw conclusions about their collective thinking in terms of content, complexity, and homogeneity. Design/methodology/approach – A standard set of value-adding factors and bipolar constructs was included in a grid form used for data collection. The repertory grid technique and principal component analysis were used to map and analyze the thought patterns of nearly half of the APAs in Sweden. Findings – Analysis of the mean grid for all respondents revealed three dimensions in the aggregated APA thought pattern: property object – property market focus, abstract – specific information, and expert – superficial assessments. The aggregated thought pattern was found to be moderately complex, and the APAs demonstrated relatively strong homogeneity in their thought patterns. Practical implications – Based on the moderate complexity and relatively strong homogeneity in respondent thought patterns, this study discusses the upcoming establishment of a profession. Originality/value – To the authors’ best knowledge, this is the first study using the repertory grid technique to map and analyze APA thought patterns at an aggregated level.

  • How authorized property appraisers perceive information for valuation of commercial properties
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – This study describe and analyze authorized property appraisers’ (APAs) thought patterns when commercial properties are valued, and compare and draw conclusions about their thinking in terms of content, complexity and homogeneity.Design/methodology/approach – First, a standard set of elements and constructs was included in the grid form (used for data collection). Second, the repertory grid technique and principal component analysis were used to map and analyze the thought patterns of nearly half (67) of the authorized APAs in Sweden.Findings - Analysis of the individual grids and the mean grid of all respondents demonstrated similarities in the APAs construing and revealed relatively homogeneous thought patterns. Accordingly, the APAs seem encouraged by general guidelines (such as Swedish Annual property Index valuation guidance), and by guidelines and ethical rules prepared by the APAs own organization. At the same time the APAs thought patterns were found to be relatively complex. They focus on several kinds of information and their assessments are perceived to effect property valuation on micro and macro levels differently.Practical implications – Based on the homogeneity in the APA’s thought patterns, this study discusses if authorized APAs have begun a “legitimacy journey” towards an upcoming establishment of a profession. Originality/value – To the auditors knowledge this is the first study using the repertory grid to map and analyse APA’s thought patterns at an aggregated level.

    • The repertory grid technique is used to investigate professional property appraisers' thought patterns, and these patterns' complexity, with respect to the universities from which the appraisers graduated. Nearly half of Sweden's 138 authorized property appraisers participated in the study. The results indicate that the appraisers graduating from the university with the longest tradition of property education and ranked highest among the universities offering such education in Sweden have less complex thought patterns than do those graduating from other Swedish universities. This indicates that appraisers graduating from the highest ranked university simplify their valuation judgments more than do other appraisers.

  • In the mind of the property appraiser : Studies of commercial property valuation
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A transparent market provides participants with as much information as possible. In Sweden, where the environment of commercial properties is highly transparent various actors still need to minimise some continuing information asymmetry, and one possibility is to hire property appraisers.Transparent commercial property markets are often regulated by governments and professional institutions. The combination of regulation and socialisation through memberships in professional associations and shared educational backgrounds, training, work experience, and institutional frameworks serve to produce and reproduce professional values and identities. The overall aim of this thesis is to describe and analyse the Swedish profession of property appraisers as expressed through members’ perceptions and use of various standards and methods, ways of gathering information gathering, assessments of value-influencing factors, and their confidence in their own assessments when valuing commercial properties. The repertory grid technique was used to collect and analyse empirical data and to map the thought patterns of respondents in two main samples. The repertory grid interviews in 2010/2011 included about half of the appraisers in Sweden (67 of 138), and in 2015 just over half (81 of 145).This thesis concludes that Swedish authorised property appraisers use country dependent valuation standards and methods, but there are signs of their increased adoption internationally. Swedish appraisers gather and assess information in a similar way. Their aggregated thought patterns demonstrate relatively strong homogeneity and moderate complexity. However, the findings also reveal that appraisers’ thought patterns differ depending on the university from which they graduated. The appraisers graduated from the highest ranked university simplify their valuation judgements more than do other appraisers.During the valuation process, property appraisers gather and assess a large amount of information considered relevant for estimations of a property object’s market value. Four types of information (local environment, location, rental income, and discount rate) seem to have the greatest impact on the estimated market value. The appraisers further perceive that these information types is common in that the decisions in the information gathering stage is critical to the entire valuation process when using clients as information sources. This seems to affect their perceived confidence at the assessment stage and, in turn, the final estimated market value. In situations where the appraisers have low confidence, they are left dependent on the clients, which risks reducing their independence.
