  • Does Environmental Economics Produce Aeroplanes Without Engines? - On the Need for an Environmental Social Science
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper we first critically review conventional environmental economics. We conclude that the standard theory offers too narrow a perspective for many real world problems and that many theories are not empirically tested. Consequently, environmental economics is at risk of producing aeroplanes without engines. Next, we welcome and discuss some recent trends, particularly the rapid developments of behavioural and new institutional economics as well as the increased interest in empirical analysis. Yet, we conclude that more „logical duels‟ between competing theories, more interaction between theory and empirics, and more integration between the social sciences are needed to achieve a better understanding of real world environmental problems and the development of adequate policy handles. Finally, we present an outline of steps towards the development of an environmental social science and briefly present the papers that make up this special issue as important building stones of such a discipline.

  • COPPER BINDING PROTEINS IN BREAST CANCER : CELLULAR AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Cancer is one of the leading causes of human death. However, the mechanisms governing cancer are still not fully understood. Elevated levels of copper (Cu) have been observed in both cancerous tissues and the serum of cancer patients. Cu ions play a crucial role in supporting cancer by activating Cu-dependent enzymes, which promote cancer cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Cu ions can undergo redox reactions, switching between the +1 and +2 oxidation states. Free Cu ions can therefore catalyze the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which may damage biomolecules. To avoid such reactions, Cu ions are controlled and transported by dedicated Cu transport proteins in cells. This thesis focuses on two Cu-binding proteins, antioxidant 1 Cu chaperone (Atox1) and mediator of cell motility 1 (Memo1). Previous studies have shown that Atox1 is upregulated in breast cancer cells and patients. The results of Paper I indicate that Atox1 knockdown significantly reduces the velocity and directionality of breast cancer cell migration. Data in Paper I also show close proximity between Atox1 and the Cu-dependent enzyme lysyl oxidase (LOX) in cells. These results imply that Cu transport in the Atox1-ATP7A-LOX axis is crucial for cancer cell migration. I also investigated the role of an Atox1 homolog, CUC-1, in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) cell migration during development (Paper II). CUC-1 knock-out worms have more developmental defects, implying that Atox1-like proteins contribute to cell migration during development. Memo1, connected to many oncogenic signaling pathways, was recently suggested to bind oxidized Cu ions and promote ROS generation. In contrast, my work shows that Memo1 binds the reduced form of Cu and protects against Cu-induced ROS generation in vitro and in breast cancer cells (Paper III and IV). Memo1 knockdown and external Cu addition significantly decrease cell viability and increase ROS levels in breast cancer cells. This Memo1 functionality may serve as a protective mechanism, allowing cancer cells to handle the increased demand of Cu ions in cancer-related processes. In conclusion, my research provides important new discoveries for the Cu-binding proteins Atox1 and Memo1 that may be relevant for future cancer treatments.

  • Bedömning som meningsskapande resurs i handledningssamtal : Multimodala och kvalitativa diskurser i konstnärlig högskoleutbildning
  • 2015
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this investigation is to describe assessment as a meaning-making process in individual supervision of students in higher education of the aesthetic field. The qualitative analyses focus on how assessment is expressed within the supervision, in relation to the artistic professional field. The study was conducted within a multimodal socio-semiotic perspective. Sadler’s notion of quality and Bourdieu’s field concept of habitus, contributes to the social practice within the professional field, and in the full analysis of the empirical material. The case study examines assessment in an authentic environment. The data consists of video recordings from ten supervisions that took place in two different courses at two different colleges. The video recordings were transcribed through a multimodal framework and focused on the teachers’ and student’s speech, body movements, gazes and gestures during the sessions. Four selected supervision sessions were analysed based on the research questions and on the theoretical framework. The analyses revealed that assessment in higher education of the aesthetic field can be expressed as a process whereby the quality is related to the professional field. The students, as well as their teachers, are immersed in relationships, traditions and institutions that shape their artistic choices and judgments. The results indicate that students' meaning-making is linked to their previous experience in the artistic field. Teachers’ expectations of this experience have crucial implications for how the supervision sessions are shaped and designed. The shift of focus in the supervisions goes from the fulfilment of goals stated in the curriculum, to the meaning making, values, and perspectives that are recognized within the field of the arts. The study underlines the importance of conceptualization of the artistic processes. The overall results confirm previous studies showing that instruction and supervision in higher education of the aesthetic field develops in relation to the teacher's authority, expertise and in relation to students' independence.

  • Urban–Rural Linkages : An Inquiry into Second-Home Tourism in the Nordics
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Routledge Handbook of Small Towns. - New York : Routledge. - 9780367555900 ; , s. 218-231
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Nordics have a long tradition of second homes. Regular retreats to rural areas by people from the towns and cities are quite common. This in turn has a significant impact on small towns and rural municipalities, as well as their economies – not least, because the size of the population using services and infrastructure in the area varies greatly during the course of the year. About half the population of the Nordic Region has access to a second home, which is used during the summer or winter season and increasingly at weekends. The variability of the population due to second-home usage or tourism is still largely ignored in policy and spatial planning in the Nordic countries.Based on an analysis of Nordic statistics and qualitative fieldwork in five Nordic municipalities, this chapter seeks to investigate how second homes and seasonal tourism are now being embraced as part of the Nordic spatial planning and policy agenda. It also looks at the implications of second homes and seasonal tourism for urban–rural integration throughout the Nordic region.

  • A content analysis on the perceptions of LGBTQ plus (centred) health care on Twitter
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Health Expectations. - : Wiley. - 1369-6513 .- 1369-7625. ; 25:6, s. 3238-3245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background LGBTQ+ individuals have experienced many barriers to receiving quality health care, but the worldwide implementation of person-centred care should make a positive change. However, as forthright disclosures are difficult to find using traditional methods, novel approaches should be utilized to uncover opinions and experiences on LGBTQ+ health care. Twitter could be a place where people post on this topic. Aim This study aimed to explore tweets mentioning LGBTQ+ (centred) health care. Methods The methods consisted of an explorative qualitative content analysis of tweets. The tweets were collected between 26 February and 30 March 2021, resulting in 2524 tweets of which 659 were relevant for content analysis. Results The results showed an excess of political tweets involving LGBTQ+ health care. Many tweets included general statements on the need for LGBTQ+ health care. The few tweets on personal experiences in LGBTQ+ health care showed the overwhelming need for quality care that has been made difficult by political developments. Conclusion Most tweets were made to inform others of the necessity of quality health care for LGBTQ+ individuals, but the utilization of person-centred care is hardly noticeable. Public Contribution This study was conducted with the involvement of a public partner (second author) who contributed to the design, data analyses and writing of the paper. Moreover, this study involves the analysis of data provided by the public and published on social media.

  • Throughput, Capacity, Handover and Latency Performance in a 3GPP LTE FDD Field Trial
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: GLOBECOM - IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference, Dec 6-10, 2010, Miami, USA. - 9781424456383
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents a summary of 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) radio system performance during theexecution of a multi-site field trial. This exhaustive testing campaign, performed over the lower 700 MHz and 2 GHz bands, includes a battery of stationary and mobility throughput cases, multi-user capacity scenarios, handover performance and latency tests, that have been designed to reveal LTE radio performance under a variety of realistic user scenarios. Tests have been performed using a Category 2 LTE UE, which can handle a maximum transport of 50 Mbps in the downlink and 25 Mbps in the uplink. As the results indicate, the system boasts a peak downlinksingle-user throughput in excess of 49 Mbps and a peak uplink single-user throughput observed of 19 Mbps, which is quite close to the theoretical uplink limit of 21 Mbps. In multi-user scenarios with four active users, in the best case, we have measured a cell throughput of 47 Mbps in the downlink and 20 Mbps in the uplink, which is close to the theoretical best. Finally, as we show, the system achieves a handover success rate of 100% and a bestcase average user plane latency of 22ms.

  • Inhibitory rTMS of secondary somatosensory cortex reduces intensity but not pleasantness of gentle touch
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Neuroscience Letters. - : ELSEVIER IRELAND LTD. - 0304-3940 .- 1872-7972. ; 653, s. 84-91
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research suggests that the discriminative and affective aspects of touch are processed differently in the brain. Primary somatosensory cortex is strongly implicated in touch discrimination, whereas insular and prefronal regions have been associated with pleasantness aspects of touch. However, the role of secondary somatosensory cortex (S2) is less clear. In the current study we used inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to temporarily deactivate S2 and probe its role in touch perception. Nineteen healthy adults received two sessions of 1-Hz rTMS on separate days, one targeting right S2 and the other targeting the vertex (control). Before and after rTMS, subjects rated the intensity and pleasantness of slow and fast gentle brushing of the hand and performed a 2-point tactile discrimination task, followed by fMRI during additional brushing. rTMS to S2 (but not vertex) decreased intensity ratings of fast brushing, without altering touch pleasantness or spatial discrimination. MRI showed a reduced response to brushing in S2 (but not in S1 or insula) after S2 rTMS. Together, our results show that reducing touch evoked activity in S2 decreases perceived touch intensity, suggesting a causal role of S2 in touch intensity perception. • Beyond the box: enhancing the circular economy strategies through smart packaging
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines the transition from linear to circular packaging, highlighting the role of smart packaging technologies in enhancing circular economy strategies. We explore the challenges and technological facilitators in adopting circular packaging through an embedded case study approach involving Scandinavian manufacturers. Our findings suggest that smart packaging, equipped with sensors and digital capabilities, helps address supply chain complexities and regulatory compliance issues. It also has the potential to improve consumer acceptance and foster collaboration among stakeholders. The paper underscores the potential of integrating smart technologies into packaging to accelerate sustainable practices within the CE framework.

  • Modelling and sensitivity analysis of the reactions involving receptor, G-protein and effector in vertebrate olfactory receptor neurons
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Computational Neuroscience. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0929-5313 .- 1573-6873. ; 27:3, s. 471-491
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A biochemical model of the receptor, G-protein and effector (RGE) interactions during transduction in the cilia of vertebrate olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) was developed and calibrated to experimental recordings of cAMP levels and the receptor current (RC). The model describes the steps from odorant binding to activation of the effector enzyme which catalyzes the conversion of ATP to cAMP, and shows how odorant stimulation is amplified and delayed by the RGE transduction cascade. A time-dependent sensitivity analysis was performed on the model. The model output-the cAMP production rate-is particularly sensitive to a few, dominant parameters. During odorant stimulation it depends mainly on the initial density of G-proteins and the catalytic constant for cAMP production.

  • Low-cost variable stiffness joint design using translational variable radius pulleys
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Mechanism and Machine Theory. - : Elsevier BV. - 0094-114X. ; 130, s. 203-219
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Robot joints are expected to be safe, compliant, compact, simple and low-cost. Gravity compensation, zero backlash, energy efficiency and stiffness adjustability are some desired features in the robotic joints. The variable radius pulleys (VRPs) provide a simple, compact and low-cost solution to the stiffness adjustment problem. VRP mechanisms maintain a preconfigured nonlinear force-elongation curve utilizing off-the-shelf torsional spring and pulley profile. In this paper, three synthesis algorithms are presented for VRP mechanisms to obtain desired force-elongation curve. In addition, a feasibility condition is proposed to determine the torsional spring coefficient. Using the synthesis methods and the feasibility condition, a variable stiffness mechanism is designed and manufactured which uses two VRPs in an antagonistic cable driven structure. Afterwards, the outputs of three synthesis methods are compared to force-elongation characteristics in the tensile testing experiment. A custom testbed is manufactured to measure the pulley rotation, cable elongation and tensile force at the same time. Using the experiment as the baseline, the best algorithm achieved to reproduce the desired curve with a root-mean-square (RMS) error of 13.3%. Furthermore, VRP-VSJ is implemented with a linear controller to reveal the performance of the mechanism in terms of position accuracy and stiffness adjustability.

  • Targeting the EGFR pathway for cancer therapy
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Current Medicinal Chemistry. - : Bentham Science Publishers Ltd.. - 0929-8673 .- 1875-533X. ; 13:29, s. 3483-3492
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Clinical studies have shown that HER-2/Neu is over-expressed in up to one-third of patients with a variety of cancers, including B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL), breast cancer and lung cancer, and that these patients are frequently resistant to conventional chemo-therapies. Additionally, in most patients with multiple myeloma, the malignant cells over-express a number of epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR)s and their ligands, HB-EGF and amphiregulin, thus this growth-factor family may be an important aspect in the patho-biology of this disease. These and other, related findings have provided the rationale for the targeting of the components of the EGFR signaling pathways for cancer therapy. Below we discuss various aspects of EGFR-targeted therapies mainly in hematologic malignancies, lung cancer and breast cancer. Beside novel therapeutic approaches, we also discuss specific side effects associated with the therapeutic inhibition of components of the EGFR-pathways. Alongside small inhibitors, such as Lapatinib (Tykerb, GW572016), Gefitinib (Iressa, Z131839), and Erlotinib (Tarceva, OSI-774), a significant part of the review is also dedicated to therapeutic antibodies (e.g.: Trastuzumab / Herceptin, Pertuzumab / Omnitarg / rhuMab-2C4, Cetuximab / Erbitux / IMC-C225, Panitumumab / Abenix / ABX-EGF, and also ZD6474). In addition, we summarize, both current therapy development driven by antibody-based targeting of the EGFR-dependent signaling pathways, and furthermore, we provide a background on the history and the development of therapeutic antibodies.

  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Samtalets mekanismer. - : Liber, Stockholm. - 9789147088706 ; , s. 285-311
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • It is claimed that a good dialogue participants view their dialogue partners’ contributions as justified by revealed reasons rather than by hidden causal mechanisms. An experiment is reported where politicians and ordinary citizens discussed issues in immigration politics. The participants were divided into two experimental groups (where they were asked to take their opponents’ perspective) and one control group (ordinary discussion). Against expectations, it was found perspective taking did not make participants more reason focused, when explaining other participants’ contributions to the discussion. However, all participants tended to view their fellow participants as more reasons driven than was true for how they viewed other people in general. It was concluded that just giving an opportunity for citizens and politicians to talk with each other increase possibilities for a good dialogue.

  • Signs and symptoms after temporomandibular joint washing and cannula placement assessed by cone beam computerized tomography
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Acta Odontologica Scandinavica. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0001-6357 .- 1502-3850. ; 73:6, s. 454-460
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: Analyses of temporomandibular joint synovial fluid using the hydroxocobalamin push-pull technique are increasingly used. However, objective complications and subjective experiences from this procedure have not been described. Firstly, this study aimed to describe discomfort and potential side-effects of this method with special emphasis on symptoms related to the arthrocentesis to be used for future patient information and Ethical Committee applications. Secondly, this study aimed to evaluate the use of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as control of intra-capsular cannula placement. METHODS: Twenty healthy, young adult volunteers were included. Extensive objective and subjective questionnaires were completed before and 14 days after the synovial fluid sampling. With the cannula inside the joints a CBCT was done to investigate if this procedure can be used to verify intra-capsular cannula position. RESULTS: The subjective findings: Most subjects did experience mild pain or discomfort post-operatively. In 12 of 20 subjects symptoms had resolved after 2 days and no subjects had symptoms for more than a week. The longer lasting symptoms were mainly transient joint sounds on mandibular movement. Objective findings: 14 days after the sampling mandibular protrusion had improved 1 mm, but all other objective measures were equal compared to baseline. CBCT showed a large variation in cannula position and no conclusions could be drawn from this. CONCLUSION: The hydroxocobalamin push-pull synovial fluid sampling may cause minor, transient symptoms. CBCT does not seem to provide any clinical benefits concerning the correct cannula position in relation to the upper joint compartment and disc
