  • Self-Assembled Liposomes Enhance Electron Transfer for Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

    • Light-driven conversion of CO2 to chemicals provides a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, but homogeneous systems are typically limited by cross reactivity between different redox half reactions and inefficient charge separation. Herein, we present the bioinspired development of amphiphilic photosensitizer and catalyst pairs that self-assemble in lipid membranes to overcome some of these limitations and enable photocatalytic CO2 reduction in liposomes using precious metal-free catalysts. Using sodium ascorbate as a sacrificial electron source, a membrane-anchored alkylated cobalt porphyrin demonstrates higher catalytic CO production (1456 vs 312 turnovers) and selectivity (77 vs 11%) compared to its watersoluble nonalkylated counterpart. Time-resolved and steady-state spectroscopy revealed that self-assembly facilitates this performance enhancement by enabling a charge-separation state lifetime increase of up to two orders of magnitude in the dye while allowing for a ninefold faster electron transfer to the catalyst. Spectroelectrochemistry and density functional theory calculations of the alkylated Co porphyrin catalyst support a four-electron-charging mechanism that activates the catalyst prior to catalysis, together with key catalytic intermediates. Our molecular liposome system therefore benefits from membrane immobilization and provides a versatile and efficient platform for photocatalysis.

    • The effect of chain architecture on the swelling and thermal response of thin films obtained from an amphiphilic three-arm star-shaped thermo-responsive block copolymer poly(methoxy diethylene glycol acrylate)-block-polystyrene ((PMDEGA-b-PS)(3)) is investigated by in situ neutron reflectivity (NR) measurements. The PMDEGA and PS blocks are micro-phase separated with randomly distributed PS nanodomains. The (PMDEGA-b-PS)(3) films show a transition temperature (TT) at 33 degrees C in white light interferometry. The swelling capability of the (PMDEGA-b-PS)(3) films in a D2O vapor atmosphere is better than that of films from linear PS-b-PMDEGA-b-PS triblock copolymers, which can be attributed to the hydrophilic end groups and limited size of the PS blocks in (PMDEGA-b-PS)(3). However, the swelling kinetics of the as-prepared (PMDEGA-b-PS)(3) films and the response of the swollen film to a temperature change above the TT are significantly slower than that in the PS-b-PMDEGA-b-PS films, which may be related to the conformation restriction by the star-shape. Unlike in the PS-b-PMDEGA-b-PS films, the amount of residual D2O in the collapsed (PMDEGA-b-PS)(3) films depends on the final temperature. It decreases from (9.7 +/- 0.3)% to (7.0 +/- 0.3)% or (6.0 +/- 0.3)% when the final temperatures are set to 35 degrees C, 45 degrees C and 50 degrees C, respectively. This temperature-dependent reduction of embedded D2O originates from the hindrance of chain conformation from the star-shaped chain architecture.

  • Cross-Version Software Defect Prediction Considering Concept Drift and Chronological Splitting

    • Concept drift (CD) refers to a phenomenon where the data distribution within datasets changes over time, and this can have adverse effects on the performance of prediction models in software engineering (SE), including those used for tasks like cost estimation and defect prediction. Detecting CD in SE datasets is difficult, but important, because it identifies the need for retraining prediction models and in turn improves their performance. If the concept drift is caused by symmetric changes in the data distribution, the model adaptation process might need to account for this symmetry to maintain accurate predictions. This paper explores the impact of CD within the context of cross-version defect prediction (CVDP), aiming to enhance the reliability of prediction performance and to make the data more symmetric. A concept drift detection (CDD) approach is further proposed to identify data distributions that change over software versions. The proposed CDD framework consists of three stages: (i) data pre-processing for CD detection; (ii) notification of CD by triggering one of the three flags (i.e., CD, warning, and control); and (iii) providing guidance on when to update an existing model. Several experiments on 30 versions of seven software projects reveal the value of the proposed CDD. Some of the key findings of the proposed work include: (i) An exponential increase in the error-rate across different software versions is associated with CD. (ii) A moving-window approach to train defect prediction models on chronologically ordered defect data results in better CD detection than using all historical data with a large effect size (Formula presented.).

    • We consider the stationary flow of an inviscid and incompressible fluid of constant density in the region D = (0, L) × ℝ2. We are concerned with flows that are periodic in the second and third variables and that have prescribed flux through each point of the boundary ∂D. The Bernoulli equation states that the "Bernoulli function" H := 1/2 |v|2 + p (where v is the velocity field and p the pressure) is constant along stream lines, that is, each particle is associated with a particular value of H. We also prescribe the value of H on ∂D. The aim of this work is to develop an existence theory near a given constant solution. It relies on writing the velocity field in the form v = ∇ f × ∇g and deriving a degenerate nonlinear elliptic system for f and g. This system is solved using the Nash-Moser method, as developed for the problem of isometric embeddings of Riemannian manifolds; see, e.g., the book by Q. Han and J.-X. Hong (2006). Since we can allow H to be nonconstant on ∂D, our theory includes three-dimensional flows with nonvanishing vorticity.

    • Studies on whether family history (FH) of venous thromboembolism (VTE) affects long-term mortality after VTE are missing. The aim of this study was to determine whether FH of VTE affects long-term mortality after a first episode of VTE. Using Swedish medical databases, we conducted a 30-year nationwide cohort study of 49,159 adult Swedish born patients included in the multi-generation register (born 1932 or later) with a first-time VTE (1981–2010). Using Cox regression, we assessed mortality Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Totally 10,093 (20.5%) patients with VTE had a first-degree FH of VTE (parent/sibling). Patients without FH of VTE had significantly more VTE provoking risk factors and comorbidities than those with FH. The mortality HR the first 10-years after first time VTE was decreased for those with FH of VTE compared to for those without FH: crude HR 0.807, 95% CI 0.771–0.845 and adjusted HR 0.864, 95% CI 0.826–0.905. After 10-years of follow-up there was no significant effect of FH of VTE on mortality: crude HR = 1.018, 95% CI 0.905–1.145 and adjusted HR = 0.995, 95% CI 0.884–1.119. Cancer-associated mortality was more common in those without FH the first 10 years (56.9 vs. 53.4%, p = 0.002). After 10 years there were no difference in cancer-associated mortality (4.9 vs. 5.6%, p = 0.604). The results suggest that patients with FH of VTE have lower thrombotic threshold and need less provoking factors and comorbidities. They have also slightly lower total and cancer mortality the first 10 years after VTE.
