  • Global burden of peripheral artery disease and its risk factors, 1990-2019 : a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: The Lancet Global Health. - : Elsevier. - 2214-109X. ; 11:10, s. E1553-E1565
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Peripheral artery disease is a growing public health problem. We aimed to estimate the global disease burden of peripheral artery disease, its risk factors, and temporospatial trends to inform policy and public measures. Methods: Data on peripheral artery disease were modelled using the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 database. Prevalence, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and mortality estimates of peripheral artery disease were extracted from GBD 2019. Total DALYs and age-standardised DALY rate of peripheral artery disease attributed to modifiable risk factors were also assessed.Findings: In 2019, the number of people aged 40 years and older with peripheral artery disease was 113 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 99 center dot 2-128 center dot 4), with a global prevalence of 1 center dot 52% (95% UI 1 center dot 33-1 center dot 72), of which 42 center dot 6% was in countries with low to middle Socio-demographic Index (SDI). The global prevalence of peripheral artery disease was higher in older people, (14 center dot 91% [12 center dot 41-17 center dot 87] in those aged 80-84 years), and was generally higher in females than in males. Globally, the total number of DALYs attributable to modifiable risk factors in 2019 accounted for 69 center dot 4% (64 center dot 2-74 center dot 3) of total peripheral artery disease DALYs. The prevalence of peripheral artery disease was highest in countries with high SDI and lowest in countries with low SDI, whereas DALY and mortality rates showed U-shaped curves, with the highest burden in the high and low SDI quintiles.Interpretation: The total number of people with peripheral artery disease has increased globally from 1990 to 2019. Despite the lower prevalence of peripheral artery disease in males and low-income countries, these groups showed similar DALY rates to females and higher-income countries, highlighting disproportionate burden in these groups. Modifiable risk factors were responsible for around 70% of the global peripheral artery disease burden. Public measures could mitigate the burden of peripheral artery disease by modifying risk factors.

  • SN 2017gmr : An Energetic Type II-P Supernova with Asymmetries
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 885:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present high-cadence UV, optical, and near-infrared data on the luminous Type II-P supernova SN;2017gmr from hours after discovery through the first 180 days. SN;2017gmr does not show signs of narrow, high-ionization emission lines in the early optical spectra, yet the optical light-curve evolution suggests that an extra energy source from circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction must be present for at least 2 days after explosion. Modeling of the early light curve indicates a ?500 R progenitor radius, consistent with a rather compact red supergiant, and late-time luminosities indicate that up to 0.130;;0.026 M of Ni-56 are present, if the light curve is solely powered by radioactive decay, although the Ni-56 mass may be lower if CSM interaction contributes to the post-plateau luminosity. Prominent multipeaked emission lines of H? and [O i] emerge after day 154, as a result of either an asymmetric explosion or asymmetries in the CSM. The lack of narrow lines within the first 2 days of explosion in the likely presence of CSM interaction may be an example of close, dense, asymmetric CSM that is quickly enveloped by the spherical supernova ejecta.

  • Optical studies of two stripped-envelope supernovae – SN 2015ap (Type Ib) and SN 2016P (Type Ic)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 497:3, s. 3770-3789
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the photometric and spectroscopic studies of a Type Ib SN 2015ap and a Type Ic SN 2016P. SN 2015ap is one of the bright (MV = −18.04 mag) Type Ib while SN 2016P lies at an average value among the Type Ic SNe (MV = −17.53 mag). Bolometric light-curve modelling of SNe 2015ap and 2016P indicates that both the SNe are powered by 56Ni + magnetar model with 56Ni masses of 0.01 and 0.002 M⊙, ejecta masses of 3.75 and 4.66 M⊙, spin period P0 of 25.8 and 36.5 ms, and magnetic field Bp of 28.39 × 1014 and 35.3 × 1014 G, respectively. The early spectra of SN 2015ap show prominent lines of He with a ‘W’ feature due to Fe complexes while other lines of Mg ii, Na i, and Si ii are present in both SNe 2015ap and 2016P. Nebular phase [O i] profile indicates an asymmetric profile in SN 2015ap. The [O i]/[Ca ii] ratio and nebular spectral modelling of SN 2015ap hint towards a progenitor mass between 12 and 20 M⊙.

  • Ingår i: IEEE journal of biomedical and health informatics. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 2168-2194 .- 2168-2208. ; 27:2, s. 722-731
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The coronavirus pandemic has overburdened medical institutions, forcing physicians to diagnose and treat their patients remotely. Moreover, COVID-19 has made humans more conscious about their health, resulting in the extensive purchase of IoT-enabled medical devices. The rapid boom in the market worth of the internet of medical things (IoMT) captured cyber attackers attention. Like health, medical data is also sensitive and worth a lot on the dark web. Despite the fact that the patients health details have not been protected appropriately, letting the trespassers exploit them. The system administrator is unable to fortify security measures due to the limited storage capacity and computation power of the resource-constrained network devices. Although various supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms have been developed to identify anomalies, the primary undertaking is to explore the swift progressing malicious attacks before they deteriorate the wellness systems integrity. In this paper, a Dew-Cloud based model is designed to enable hierarchical federated learning (HFL). The proposed Dew-Cloud model provides a higher level of data privacy with greater availability of IoMT critical application(s). The hierarchical long-term memory (HLSTM) model is deployed at distributed Dew servers with a backend supported by cloud computing. Data pre-processing feature helps the proposed model achieve high training accuracy (99.31%) with minimum training loss (0.034). The experiment results demonstrate that the proposed HFL-HLSTM model is superior to existing schemes in terms of performance metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and f-score.

  • A comparison between use of spray and freeze drying techniques for preparation of solid self-microemulsifying formulation of valsartan and in vitro and in vivo evaluation
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: BioMed Research International. - : Hindawi Limited. - 2314-6133 .- 2314-6141. ; 2013
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of the present study was to develop self micro emulsifying formulation (SMEF) of valsartan to improve its oral bioavailability. The formulations were screened on the basis of solubility, stability, emulsification efficiency, particle size and zeta potential. The optimized liquid SMEF contains valsartan (20% w/w), Capmul MCM C8 (16% w/w), Tween 80 (42.66% w/w) and PEG 400 (21.33% w/w) as drug, oil, surfactant and co-surfactant, respectively. Further, Liquid SMEF was adsorbed on Aerosol 200 by spray and freeze drying methods in the ratio of 2: 1 and transformed into free flowing powder. Both the optimized liquid and solid SMEF had the particle size <200 nm with rapid reconstitution properties. Both drying methods are equally capable for producing stable solid SMEF and immediate release of drug in in vitro and in vivo conditions. However, the solid SMEF produced by spray drying method showed high flowability and compressibility. The solid state characterization employing the FTIR, DSC and XRD studies indicated insignificant interaction of drug with lipid and adsorbed excipient. The relative bioavailability of solid SMEF was approximately 1.5 to 3.0 folds higher than marketed formulation and pure drug. Thus, the developed solid SMEF illustrates an alternative delivery of valsartan as compared to existing formulations with improved bioavailability

    • BACKGROUND: Companionship at the time of birth is a nonclinical intervention that has been proven to improve the quality of intrapartum care. This study aims to evaluate the coverage, associated factors, and impact of companionship during labor at public hospitals in Nepal.METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional observational study in six public hospitals in Nepal. The study was conducted from July 2018 to August 2018. Data were collected on sociodemographic, maternal, obstetric, and neonatal characteristics from patient case notes and through predischarge interviews. Coverage of companionship during labor and its association with intrapartum care was analyzed. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were done to assess the association between companionship during labor and demographic, obstetric, and neonatal characteristics.RESULTS: A total of 63 077 women participated in the study with 19% of them having a companion during labor. Women aged 19-24 years had 65% higher odds of having a companion during labor compared with women aged 35 years and older (aOR 1.65 [95% CI, 1.40-1.94]). Women who were from an advantaged ethnic group (Chhetri/Brahmin) had fourfold higher odds of having a companion than women from a disadvantaged group (aOR 3.84; [95% CI, 3.24-4.52]). Women who had companions during labor had fewer unnecessary cesarean births than those who had no companions (5.2% vs 6.8%, P < .001).CONCLUSIONS: In Nepal, sociodemographic factors affect women's likelihood of having a companion during labor. As companionship during labor is associated with improved quality of care, health facilities should encourage women's access to birth companions.

  • Extracting Primary Objects and Spatial Relations from Sentences
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In verbal human-robot interaction natural language utterances have to be grounded in visual scenes by the robot. Visual language grounding is a challenging task that includes identifying a primary object among several objects, together with the object properties and spatial relations among the objects. In this paper we focus on extracting this information from sentences only. We propose two language modelling techniques, one uses regular expressions and the other one utilizes Euclidian distance. We compare these two proposed techniques with two other techniques that utilize tree structures, namely an extended Hobb’s algorithm and an algorithm that utilizes a Stanford parse tree. A comparative analysis between all language modelling techniques shows that our proposed two approaches require less computational time than the tree-based approaches. All approaches perform good identifying the primary object and its property, but for spatial relation extraction the Stanford parse tree algorithm performs better than the other language modelling techniques. Time elapsed for the Stanford parse tree algorithm is higher than for the other techniques.

  • Fusion of Gesture and Speech for Increased Accuracy in Human Robot Interaction
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 2019 24th International Conference on Methods and Models in Automation and Robotics (MMAR). - : IEEE. - 9781728109336 ; , s. 139-144
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An approach for decision-level fusion for gesture and speech based human-robot interaction (HRI) is proposed. A rule-based method is compared with several machine learning approaches. Gestures and speech signals are initially classified using hidden Markov models, reaching accuracies of 89.6% and 84% respectively. The rule-based approach reached 91.6% while SVM, which was the best of all evaluated machine learning algorithms, reached an accuracy of 98.2% on the test data. A complete framework is deployed in real time humanoid robot (NAO) which proves the efficacy of the system.

  • Influence of loading rate and hydrogen content on fracture toughness of Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube material
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nuclear Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-3115. ; 465, s. 177-188
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the safety assessment of PHWR, it is required to study the flaw tolerance capacity of the pressure tubes as a function of the loading rate. In this work, the effect of loading rate and hydrogen content on the fracture behaviour of a Zr-2.5Nb alloy pressure tube was investigated between 25 and 300 degrees C. For the as received material, the pulling rate only had an effect on fracture toughness at 25 degrees C whereas for. hydrided material the pulling rate affected fracture toughness in the transition regime. For all pulling rates, hydrided materials showed typical S curve behavior with an increase in lower shelf, upper shelf and transition temperature with pulling rate. The number of axial splits on fracture surfaces increased with an increase in the pulling rate and a decrease in temperature and fracture toughness was found to decrease with an increase in the number of axial splits. The reduction in fracture toughness is attributed to a localised deformation between axial splits. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • GROWTH on S190425z : Searching Thousands of Square Degrees to Identify an Optical or Infrared Counterpart to a Binary Neutron Star Merger with the Zwicky Transient Facility and Palomar Gattini-IR
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal Letters. - : American Astronomical Society. - 2041-8205 .- 2041-8213. ; 885:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The third observing run by LVC has brought the discovery of many compact binary coalescences. Following the detection of the first binary neutron star merger in this run (LIGO/Virgo S190425z), we performed a dedicated follow-up campaign with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and Palomar Gattini-IR telescopes. The initial skymap of this single-detector gravitational wave (GW) trigger spanned most of the sky observable from Palomar Observatory. Covering 8000 deg(2) of the initial skymap over the next two nights, corresponding to 46% integrated probability, ZTF system achieved a depth of 21 m(AB) in g- and r-bands. Palomar Gattini-IR covered 2200 square degrees in J-band to a depth of 15.5 mag, including 32% integrated probability based on the initial skymap. The revised skymap issued the following day reduced these numbers to 21% for the ZTF and 19% for Palomar Gattini-IR. We narrowed 338,646 ZTF transient ?alerts? over the first two nights of observations to 15 candidate counterparts. Two candidates, ZTF19aarykkb and ZTF19aarzaod, were particularly compelling given that their location, distance, and age were consistent with the GW event, and their early optical light curves were photometrically consistent with that of kilonovae. These two candidates were spectroscopically classified as young core-collapse supernovae. The remaining candidates were ruled out as supernovae. Palomar Gattini-IR did not identify any viable candidates with multiple detections only after merger time. We demonstrate that even with single-detector GW events localized to thousands of square degrees, systematic kilonova discovery is feasible.

  • 2013
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Infectous Diseses. - : Science Publications. - 1553-6203. ; 9:4, s. 117-129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to understand the mechanism of molecular interactions at the active site of Tryparedoxin Peroxidase (Try P), homology modeling and docking studies were performed. We generated a Three-Dimensional (3D) model of target protein based on the Crystal structure of Leishmania Major Try PI (PDB ID: 3TUE) using modeler software. Docking analysis was carried out to study the effects of methotrexate on Tryparedoxin Peroxidase (Try P). Inhibition of the Tryparedoxin peroxidase interaction has become a new therapeutic strategy in treating leishmaniasis. Docking analysis was carried out to study the effects of methotrexate on Tryparedoxin Peroxidase (TryP). Tryparedoxin peroxidase of Trypanosomatidae family functions as antioxidant through their peroxidase and peroxynitrite reductase activities. The theoretical docking study, conducted on a sample previously reported for anti-cancer properties of Methotrexate at the binding site of 3D models of Tryparedoxin Peroxidase of Leishmania braziliensis (L. braziliensis Try P) examine interaction energy. Our studies indicate that Methotrexate displays potent activity against Try P with lowest binding energy and RMSD values to be -14.5879 Kcal/Mol and 2.0 A. The results of the present study clearly demonstrated the Tryparedoxin Peroxidase inhibitory activity by methotrexate in in silico docking analysis and in vitro assay which contributes towards understanding the mechanism of antileishmanial activity.

  • Predictors for timely initiation of breastfeeding after birth in the hospitals of Nepal- a prospective observational study.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International breastfeeding journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1746-4358. ; 16:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Timely initiation of breastfeeding can reduce neonatal morbidities and mortality. We aimed to study predictors for timely initiation of breastfeeding (within 1 h of birth) among neonates born in hospitals of Nepal.A prospective observational study was conducted in four public hospitals between July and October 2018. All women admitted in the hospital for childbirth and who consented were included in the study. An independent researchers observed whether the neonates were placed in skin-to-skin contact, delay cord clamping and timely initiation of breastfeeding. Sociodemographic variables, obstetric and neonate information were extracted from the maternity register. We analysed predictors for timely initiation of breastfeeding with Pearson chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression.Among the 6488 woman-infant pair observed, breastfeeding was timely initiated in 49.5% neonates. The timely initiation of breastfeeding was found to be higher among neonates who were placed skin-to-skin contact (34.9% vs 19.9%, p - value < 0.001). The timely initiation of breastfeeding was higher if the cord clamping was delayed than early cord clamped neonates (44.5% vs 35.3%, p - value < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, a mother with no obstetric complication during admission had 57% higher odds of timely initiation of breastfeeding (aOR 1.57; 95% CI 1.33, 1.86). Multiparity was associated with less timely initiation of breastfeeding (aOR 1.56; 95% CI 1.35, 1.82). Similarly, there was more common practice of timely initiation of breastfeeding among low birthweight neonates (aOR 1.46; 95% CI 1.21, 1.76). Neonates who were placed skin-to-skin contact with mother had more than two-fold higher odds of timely breastfeeding (aOR 2.52; 95% CI 2.19, 2.89). Likewise, neonates who had their cord intact for 3 min had 37% higher odds of timely breastfeeding (aOR 1.37; 95% CI 1.21, 1.55).The rate of timely initiation of breastfeeding practice is low in the health facilities of Nepal. Multiparity, no obstetric complication at admission, neonates placed in skin-to-skin contact and delay cord clamping were strong predictors for timely initiation of breastfeeding. Quality improvement intervention can improve skin-to-skin contact, delayed cord clamping and timely initiation of breastfeeding.

  • Respectful maternal and newborn care: measurement in one EN-BIRTH study hospital in Nepal.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMC pregnancy and childbirth. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2393. ; 21:Suppl 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Respectful maternal and newborn care (RMNC) is an important component of high-quality care but progress is impeded by critical measurement gaps for women and newborns. The Every Newborn Birth Indicators Research Tracking in Hospitals (EN-BIRTH) study was an observational study with mixed methods assessing measurement validity for coverage and quality of maternal and newborn indicators. This paper reports results regarding the measurement of respectful care for women and newborns. At one EN-BIRTH study site in Pokhara, Nepal, we included additional questions during exit-survey interviews with women about their experiences (July 2017-July 2018). The questionnaire was based on seven mistreatment typologies: Physical; Sexual; or Verbal abuse; Stigma/discrimination; Failure to meet professional standards of care; Poor rapport between women and providers; and Health care denied due to inability to pay. We calculated associations between these typologies and potential determinants of health - ethnicity, age, sex, mode of birth - as possible predictors for reporting poor care.Among 4296 women interviewed, none reported physical, sexual, or verbal abuse. 15.7% of women were dissatisfied with privacy, and 13.0% of women reported their birth experience did not meet their religious and cultural needs. In descriptive analysis, adjusted odds ratios and multivariate analysis showed primiparous women were less likely to report respectful care (β = 0.23, p-value < 0.0001). Women from Madeshi (a disadvantaged ethnic group) were more likely to report poor care (β = - 0.34; p-value 0.037) than women identifying as Chettri/Brahmin. Women who had caesarean section were less likely to report poor care during childbirth (β = - 0.42; p-value < 0.0001) than women with a vaginal birth. However, babies born by caesarean had a 98% decrease in the odds (aOR = 0.02, 95% CI, 0.01-0.05) of receiving skin-to-skin contact than those with vaginal births.Measurement of respectful care at exit interview after hospital birth is challenging, and women generally reported 100% respectful care for themselves and their baby. Specific questions, with stratification by mode of birth, women's age and ethnicity, are important to identify those mistreated during care and to prioritise action. More research is needed to develop evidence-based measures to track experience of care, including zero separation for the mother-newborn pair, and to improve monitoring.

  • Observation of Skyrmions at Room Temperature in Co2FeAl Heusler Alloy Ultrathin Film Heterostructures
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin-textures having immense potential for energy efficient spintronic devices. Here, we report the observation of stable skyrmions in unpatterned Ta/Co2FeAl(CFA)/MgO thin film heterostructures at room temperature in remnant state employing magnetic force microscopy. It is shown that these skyrmions consisting of ultrathin ferromagnetic CFA Heusler alloy result from strong interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (i-DMI) as evidenced by Brillouin light scattering measurements, in agreement with the results of micromagnetic simulations. We also emphasize on room temperature observation of multiple skyrmions which can be stabilized for suitable combinations of CFA layer thickness, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, and i-DMI. These results provide a significant step towards designing of room temperature spintronic devices based on skyrmions in full Heusler alloy based thin films.

  • Kilonova Luminosity Function Constraints Based on Zwicky Transient Facility Searches for 13 Neutron Star Merger Triggers during O3
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 0004-637X .- 1538-4357. ; 905:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a systematic search for optical counterparts to 13 gravitational wave (GW) triggers involving at least one neutron star during LIGO/Virgo's third observing run (O3). We searched binary neutron star (BNS) and neutron star black hole (NSBH) merger localizations with the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and undertook follow-up with the Global Relay of Observatories Watching Transients Happen (GROWTH) collaboration. The GW triggers had a median localization area of 4480 deg(2), a median distance of 267 Mpc, and false-alarm rates ranging from 1.5 to 10(-25) yr(-1). The ZTF coverage in the g and r bands had a median enclosed probability of 39%, median depth of 20.8 mag, and median time lag between merger and the start of observations of 1.5 hr. The O3 follow-up by the GROWTH team comprised 340 UltraViolet/Optical/InfraRed (UVOIR) photometric points, 64 OIR spectra, and three radio images using 17 different telescopes. We find no promising kilonovae (radioactivity-powered counterparts), and we show how to convert the upper limits to constrain the underlying kilonova luminosity function. Initially, we assume that all GW triggers are bona fide astrophysical events regardless of false-alarm rate and that kilonovae accompanying BNS and NSBH mergers are drawn from a common population; later, we relax these assumptions. Assuming that all kilonovae are at least as luminous as the discovery magnitude of GW170817 (-16.1 mag), we calculate that our joint probability of detecting zero kilonovae is only 4.2%. If we assume that all kilonovae are brighter than -16.6 mag (the extrapolated peak magnitude of GW170817) and fade at a rate of 1 mag day(-1) (similar to GW170817), the joint probability of zero detections is 7%. If we separate the NSBH and BNS populations based on the online classifications, the joint probability of zero detections, assuming all kilonovae are brighter than -16.6 mag, is 9.7% for NSBH and 7.9% for BNS mergers. Moreover, no more than <57% (<89%) of putative kilonovae could be brighter than -16.6 mag assuming flat evolution (fading by 1 mag day(-1)) at the 90% confidence level. If we further take into account the online terrestrial probability for each GW trigger, we find that no more than <68% of putative kilonovae could be brighter than -16.6 mag. Comparing to model grids, we find that some kilonovae must have M-ej M, X-lan > 10(-4), or > 30 degrees to be consistent with our limits. We look forward to searches in the fourth GW observing run; even 17 neutron star mergers with only 50% coverage to a depth of -16 mag would constrain the maximum fraction of bright kilonovae to <25%.

As companionship during labor is associated with improved quality of care, health facilities should encourage women's access to birth companions.

  • The fast, luminous ultraviolet transient AT2018cow : extreme supernova, or disruption of a star by an intermediate-mass black hole?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 484:1, s. 1031-1049
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wide-field optical surveys have begun to uncover large samples of fast (t(rise) less than or similar to 5 d), luminous (M-peak < 18), blue transients. While commonly attributed to the breakout of a supernova shock into a dense wind, the great distances to the transients of this class found so far have hampered detailed investigation of their properties. We present photometry and spectroscopy from a comprehensive worldwide campaign to observe AT 2018cow (ATLAS 18qqn), the first fast-luminous optical transient to be found in real time at low redshift. Our first spectra (<2 days after discovery) are entirely featureless. A very broad absorption feature suggestive of near-relativistic velocities develops between 3 and 8 days, then disappears. Broad emission features of H and He develop after >10 days. The spectrum remains extremely hot throughout its evolution, and the photospheric radius contracts with time (receding below R < 10 (14) cm after 1 month). This behaviour does not match that of any known supernova, although a relativistic jet within a fallback supernova could explain some of the observed features. Alternatively, the transient could originate from the disruption of a star by an intermediate-mass black hole, although this would require long-lasting emission of highly super-Eddington thermal radiation. In either case, AT 2018cow suggests that the population of fast luminous transients represents a new class of astrophysical event. Intensive follow-up of this event in its late phases, and of any future events found at comparable distance, will be essential to better constrain their origins.

    • The last three decades have seen extraordinary advances in the generation of new materials based on both fundamental elements and composites, driven by advances in synthetic chemistry and often drawing inspiration from nature. The concept of an intelligent material envisions additional functionality built into the molecular structure, such that a desirable response occurs under defined conditions.

  • Barriers and enablers to routine register data collection for newborns and mothers: EN-BIRTH multi-country validation study.
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMC pregnancy and childbirth. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2393. ; 21:Suppl 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Policymakers need regular high-quality coverage data on care around the time of birth to accelerate progress for ending preventable maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths. With increasing facility births, routine Health Management Information System (HMIS) data have potential to track coverage. Identifying barriers and enablers faced by frontline health workers recording HMIS source data in registers is important to improve data for use.The EN-BIRTH study was a mixed-methods observational study in five hospitals in Bangladesh, Nepal and Tanzania to assess measurement validity for selected Every Newborn coverage indicators. We described data elements required in labour ward registers to track these indicators. To evaluate barriers and enablers for correct recording of data in registers, we designed three interview tools: a) semi-structured in-depth interview (IDI) guide b) semi-structured focus group discussion (FGD) guide, and c) checklist assessing care-to-documentation. We interviewed two groups of respondents (January 2018-March 2019): hospital nurse-midwives and doctors who fill ward registers after birth (n = 40 IDI and n = 5 FGD); and data collectors (n = 65). Qualitative data were analysed thematically by categorising pre-identified codes. Common emerging themes of barriers or enablers across all five hospitals were identified relating to three conceptual framework categories.Similar themes emerged as both barriers and enablers. First, register design was recognised as crucial, yet perceived as complex, and not always standardised for necessary data elements. Second, register filling was performed by over-stretched nurse-midwives with variable training, limited supervision, and availability of logistical resources. Documentation complexity across parallel documents was time-consuming and delayed because of low staff numbers. Complete data were valued more than correct data. Third, use of register data included clinical handover and monthly reporting, but little feedback was given from data users.Health workers invest major time recording register data for maternal and newborn core health indicators. Improving data quality requires standardised register designs streamlined to capture only necessary data elements. Consistent implementation processes are also needed. Two-way feedback between HMIS levels is critical to improve performance and accurately track progress towards agreed health goals.

  • A Fuzzy Inference System for a Visually Grounded Robot State of Mind
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ECAI 2020. - : IOS Press. - 9781643681009 - 9781643681016 ; , s. 2402-2409
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order for robots to interact with humans on real-world scenarios or objects, these robots need to construct a representa- tion (‘state of mind’) of these scenarios that a) are grounded in the robots’ perception and b) ideally should match human understand- ing and concepts. Using table-top settings as scenario, we propose a framework that generates a robot’s ’‘state of mind’ by extracting the objects on the table along with their properties (color, shape and texture) and spatial relations to each other. The scene as perceived by the robot is represented in a dynamic graph in which object at- tributes are encoded as fuzzy linguistic variables that match human spatial concepts. In particular, this paper details the construction of such graph representations by combining low-level neural network- based feature recognition and a high-level fuzzy inference system. Using fuzzy representations allows for easily adapting the robot’s original scene representation to deviations in properties or relations that emerge in language descriptions given by humans viewing the same scene. The framework is implemented on a Pepper humanoid robot and has been evaluated using a data set collected in-house.

  • An Empirical Review of Calibration Techniques for the Pepper Humanoid Robot's RGB and Depth Camera
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Intelligent Systems and Applications. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030295134 - 9783030295127 ; , s. 1026-1038
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a comparative study of different calibration techniques to align the Pepper Humanoid Robot’s depth camera with respect to its RGB camera. Both cameras are placed at different locations and have different viewpoints and view angles. We kept the image resolution same for both cameras to avoid scaling issues and tried to retrieve the translation and rotation coefficients. We used an in-house dataset for conducting experiments. The dataset consists of both RGB and Depth images of single and multiple objects placed on the table. We used homography, fundamental matrix, and proposed translation estimation technique to fix the alignment issues. Root mean square error and error variance are used as a measurement to evaluate the efficacy of the system.

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Energy, Environment, and Sustainability. - Singapore : Springer Singapore. - 2522-8374 .- 2522-8366. ; , s. 3-6
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • To resolve the transportation sector issues such as rapidly increasing petroleum consumption and stringent emission norms for vehicles, researchers have proposed three solution strategies namely advanced combustion techniques, after-treatment systems and alternative fuels. This book covers all three aspects for automotive sector. A dedicated section of this book is based on methanol, which discusses about the methanol utilization strategies in vehicles, especially in two wheelers. Second section of this book is based on advanced combustion techniques, which includes gasoline compression ignition (GCI), gasoline direct injection (GDI), and spark assisted compression ignition (SACI). Fourth section is based on emissions and after treatments systems. Last section of this book includes two different aspects. First is the vehicle lightweighting and second is the development of UAVs for defence applications. Overall this book emphasizes on different techniques, which can improve engine efficiency and reduce harmful emissions for a sustainable transport system.

  • Towards Verbal Explanations by Collaborating Robot Teams
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Social Robotics (ICSR’19), Workshop Quality of Interaction in Socially Assistive Robots, Madrid, Spain, November 26-29, 2019.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we describe ongoing work on understandable teams of robots collaborating to solve a common task while communicating their current, suggested or planned actions in natural language to human bystanders. We propose an algorithm for generating optimal sequences of partitions to be used by the robots to generate natural language utterances. These optimal sequences of partitions maintain the conversational principle of informativeness proposed by Grice. We further propose a method to incorporate policies, such as a uniform distribution of workload.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As robots become increasingly complex and competent, they will also become increasingly more difficult to understand for interacting humans. In this paper, we investigate understandability for teams of robots collaborating to solve a common task. While such robots do not need to communicate verbally with each other for successful coordination, human bystanders may benefit from overhearing verbal dialogues between the robots, describing what they do and plan to do. We present a novel and flexible solution based on Cooperating Distributed Grammar Systems and a multi-agent algorithm for coordination of actions. The solution is implemented and evaluated on three Pepper robots collabo- rating to solve a task while commenting on their own and other robots’ current and planned actions.
