  • Charged particle multiplicity and pseudorapidity density distributions in 16O-, 28Si- and 197Au-induced nuclear interactions at 14.6 and 11.6A GeV/c
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 593:4, s. 535-549
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pseudorapidity density and multiplicity distributions of charged particles produced in heavy-ion collisions at the BNL AGS have been studied. The multiplicity distributions and pseudorapidity distributions of shower particles in Au-induced interactions are presented and compared with model predictions from RQMD, FRITIOF and VENUS. It is shown that the widths of the pseudorapidity distributions of produced particles in central collisions are independent of the interacting system. The results from EMU01 have been compared, and found to agree, with the results from two other heavy-ion experiments, E802 and E814.

  • The coexistence of the intruder vi13/2, superdeformed and terminating bands in the A ∼ 135 mass region
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 608:2, s. 176-201
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The configuration-dependent shell-correction approach with the cranked Nilsson potential is employed for a systematic investigation of the high-spin spectra of the nuclei in the A ∼ 135 (Z = 57-61, N = 72-78) mass region, where superdeformed bands have been observed. Main attention is paid to the coexistence of intruder νi13/2, superdeformed and terminating bands in the yrast region. Recent developments of the formalism allow the identification of the high-j orbitals in each N-shell, for example, the g9/2 orbitals in the N = 4 shell, after the diagonalization of the cranked Nilsson potential. This turns out to be quite important for the understanding of the high collectivity of the observed bands. It is shown that the equilibrium deformation of the superdeformed bands is strongly dependent on the number of the proton holes in the g9/2 orbitals. With increasing neutron number above N = 75, the intruder νi13/2 bands are calculated triaxial. Especially for Z = 57, but also for higher proton numbers, we calculate some coexistent oblate non-collective states which are yrast for specific spin values at I ≥ 40h.

  • Internal Bremsstrahlung Accompanying the Positon Decay of 82Rb
  • 1969
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474.
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The internal bremsstrahlung from the positon decay of 82Rb has been measured in the energy ranges 0.95-1.3 and 1.7-2.0 MeV. The measured intensity was about twice the value predicted by the charge-independent theory. The external bremsstrahlung produced in stopping the positons in Be, C and Al has been measured in the same energy intervals. Energies and intensities of the γ-rays from 82Rb have been determined, and a revised energy level diagram is proposed for 82Kr. Some of the γ-rays were observed for the first time.

  • Invariant mass spectrum and alpha-n correlation function studied in the fragmentation of He-6 on a carbon target
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474. ; 633:2, s. 234-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Momentum distributions and invariant mass spectra from the breakup of He-6 ions with an energy of 240 MeV/u interacting with a carbon target have been studied. The data were used to extract information about the reaction mechanism which is influenced by the structure of He-6. It is found that the dominant reaction mechanism is a two-step process: knock out of one neutron followed by the decay of the He-5 resonance. The shape of the (alpha+n) two-body invariant mass spectrum is interpreted as mainly reflecting the 5He ground state which is a J(pi) = 3/2(-) resonance. However, no evidence for correlations between cu particles and neutrons is observed in the momentum widths of the distributions. It is demonstrated that a combined analysis of the two-body invariant mass spectrum and an appropriate correlation function may be used to determine the properties of the intermediate resonance. • Exclusive and Restricted-Inclusive Reactions Involving the Be-11 One-Neutron Halo
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 575:1, s. 125-154
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reactions of a 41 MeV/u beam of the radioactive halo nucleus Be-11 have been studied with a counter telescope coupled to an array of neutron detectors covering angles up to 97-degrees. The technique allows to determine single-neutron inclusive and exclusive angular distributions. The targets (Be, Ti and Au) were chosen to illustrate the relative roles played by nuclear and Coulomb mechanisms. The channels leading to Be-10, the dissociation channels, correspond to impact parameters larger than the sum of the radii of the target and the Be-10 core. It is shown that for the dissociation process it is possible to account almost quantitatively for the integral, single- and double-differential cross sections from models without free parameters including the Coulomb, Serber and Glauber (diffraction-dissociation) mechanisms. The neutron distributions from the nondissociative reaction channels show little individuality and it is convenient to group them together as the channel ''neutron plus anything different from Be-10''. We refer to these as ''restricted-inclusive'' reactions. These seem to be a promising tool for obtaining accurate information on the halo wave function in momentum coordinates.

  • An investigation of pairing correlations in diabatic configurations at high spin and large deformation: applications to the description of SD bands in Eu-143
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - 0375-9474. ; 708:3-4, s. 245-276
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The HFB cranked shell model is applied in an investigation of the selfconsistent pairing properties of the superdeformed (SD) bands in Eu-143. Results from a fully pairing and deformation selfconsistent mesh calculation of the properties of the most intense SD band in 143Eu are presented, as well as pairing selfconsistent calculations done at a fixed deformation close to the SD minimum for an excited SD configuration. The calculations are compared to unpaired calculations and to published experimental data. Fully diabatic configurations are studied and total energy surfaces are constructed for fixed values of the angular momentum. Other issues addressed include the development of the particle number distribution in the HFB wave function up to very high frequency, the consequences of using a fixed Fermi energy in high-spin calculations and the effects of the number of excited quasiparticles on the pairing properties of the superdeformed nucleus. • Beta decay of Ar-31
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474. ; 634:4, s. 475-496
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A complete study of Ar-31 beta decay has been made by high-resolution charged-particle and gamma-ray spectroscopy. Beta-delayed radiation was detected by an array of three charged-particle detectors and a large-volume germanium detector. Fifteen new energy levels were discovered in Cl-31. The beta-strength distribution, measured to 14.5 MeV, is compared with a shell-model calculation in the full sd space. The quenching of the Gamow-Teller strength and the isospin impurity of the IAS in Cl-31 are discussed. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

  • Two-proton emission in the decay of Ar-31
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474. ; 628:3, s. 345-362
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several beta-delayed two-proton branches were observed in the decay of Ar-31, the most intense ones proceeding through the isobaric analogue state (IAS) in Cl-31. The mechanism of the two-proton emission is studied via the energy and angular distributions of the two protons, Simultaneous emission of the two protons fits the present data well, sequential decays might also describe them. Independent of the decay mechanism, a spin of 5/2 for the IAS is suggested, An improved limit on the direct two-proton emission fi om the ground state of Ar-31 is presented, (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474. ; 701, s. 327C-333C
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Measurements have been made at ISOLDE, of the release curves and yields of radioactive beams of lithium, sodium and beryllium from a target constructed from 2 pm thick foils. The release curves have been analysed by fitting to a mathematical model to determine the coefficients of diffusion of the particles in the foils and effusion through the target and ionizer at several temperatures. Through a better understanding of the rate of transport of the particles, it is possible to design targets and ionizers with improved yields. This is most important for the rare, short-lived isotopes in which there is considerable interest for physics experiments. This target has demonstrated large increases in the yields of Li-11 and Be-12, in agreement with the predictions of the model. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474. ; 692:3-4, s. 427-450
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In beta -decay experiments on C-9 at CERN/ISOLDE the beta -strength was determined to the ground state, the 12.2 MeV excited state and the Isobaric Analog State (IAS) at 14.655 MeV in B-9. A large beta -strength asymmetry is deduced for the mirror transitions of C-9 and Li-9 to states around 12 MeV excitation energy. A satisfactory description of the three-body decay from a narrow energy region around the 12.2 MeV resonance is obtained within a sequential model involving the ground and first-excited states of Li-5 and Be-8. From the study of angular correlations the spin of the 12.2 MeV state is determined as 5/2(-). For the first time the population of the IAS is observed in beta -decay and new information on the decay of this state is obtained. The advantages of a closely packed. highly segmented detector setup are demonstrated. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • 1985
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 443:2, s. 283-301
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Delayed proton and gamma emissions following the β-decay of 32Ar have been studied. The half-life of 32Ar is 98 ± 2 ms, and the T = 2 analogue state in 32Cl lies at the excitation energy 5036 ± 12 keV. From the intensity of the feeding to this state the proton intensities can be converted to an absolute scale leading to a total proton branching ratio of (43 ± 3)%. From proton-gamma coincidence measurements it emerges that (1.9 ± 0.2)% of the protons lead to the first-excited state in 31S. A level scheme up to 8.75 MeV excitation in 32Cl has been constructed and the Gamow-Teller strength function has been deduced. The result is a renormalization of the axial-vector strength to (49 ± 5)% of the free-nucleon value.

  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 453:3, s. 463-485
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The structure of excited states in 132Sn, fed in the β-decay of 132In, has been investigated. Absolute intensities were deduced from γ-singles measurements. From multi-spectrum analysis of γ-lines the half-life of 132In was determined to be 186 ± 22 ms. A level scheme based on γγ and βγ coincidences is presented. The conversion electron spectrum has been studied and internal conversion coefficients deduced for two low-energy transitions. The total decay energy of 132In was determined, from γ-gated β-spectra, to be Qβ = 13.6 ± 0.4 MeV. A lower limit of 6.968 MeV for the neutron separation energy in 132Sn was deduced from the β-delayed neutron spectrum. The experimental results on the level structure of the doubly closed shell nucleus 132Sn show that the shell model is applicable even far from the valley of stability.

  • 1988
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 490:2, s. 287-306
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The beta-delayed proton and alpha spectra from 17Ne have been studied with Si-detectors. The Gamow-Teller strength in the decay of 17Ne has been extracted and compared with a two-particle-one-hole shell-model calculation. The experimental strength is quenched by a factor of 0.82 with respect to the calculated one. Furthermore, the decay scheme has been improved and is discussed in some detail. The proton emitting levels in 17F are very broad and the line shapes are strongly influenced by phase-space effects. Interference between peaks corresponding to the same intermediate spin is a prominent feature emerging clearly with the good resolution and statistics of the present work.

  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 460:3, s. 373-380
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A β-delayed triton branch with an intensity of (0.9 ± 0.1)% has been observed in the decay of 8He. The triton energy spectrum was measured with a specially designed ΔE − E telescope. These data as well as an earlier measured β-delayed neutron spectrum cannot be explained from the known levels in 8Li, but it turns out that the main features of both the delayed triton and the delayed neutron spectra from 8He could be understood if one assumes a new state in 8Li at about 8.8 MeV excitation energy.

  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474. ; 613:3, s. 199-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An experimental study of beta-delayed charged particles (H, He, Be) from Li-11 shows a beta-feeding to an excited state at 18.15(15) MeV in Be-11 with a large Gamow-Teller strength, B-GT greater than or equal to 1.6. Branching ratios and reduced widths of 2-, 3- and 5- particle decay channels of this state are extracted, A strong suppression of the neutron branch from the 18 MeV state to the Be-10(g.s.) is observed, We suggest that the measured partial width may be sensitive to the (p(1/2))(2) component in the Li-11 halo, A rough estimate indicates that the (p(1/2))(2) component is not the dominant one in the halo wave-function.

Beta-delayed deuterons and tritons are emitted in the two cases with branching ratios of (7.6 +/- 0.6) x 10(-6), E(d) > 350 keV and (8.0 +/- 0.5) x 10(-3), respectively. Both spectra present anomalies that must be due to the special structure of these nuclei (an alpha core surrounded by several neutrons).

    • The neutron rich 27Na was studied at Florida State University using the 14C(14C,p) reaction at 22 MeV. The 14C target was 0.28 mg/cm2 thick. γ-γ and particle-γ, coincidences were measured using 2 four-crystal clover detectors, 7 Compton-suppressed HPGe detectors, and a particle detector telescope at 0°. The 1757, 1823, and 2219 keV transitions are likely yrast transitions in 27Na. Based on systematics of neighboring nuclei, the first two lines probably arise from the decays of the 7/2+ and 9/2+ states. The results will be discussed in terms of both the shell model and the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky rotational model.

    • In our contribution to the INPC98 conference we reported on the experimental investigation of high spin collective states in medium and heavy mass N≈Z nuclei at LNL. The main purpose is to set light on the role of the proton-neutron interaction in the collective behavior of the nucleus. In medium mass N=Z nuclei, in contrast with the stable nuclei, valence protons and neutrons occupy the same orbitals and one may expect a reinforcement of neutron-proton T=0 (np) pairing correlations[1]. In this interesting subject, the medium mass N=Z=36 72Kr has been studied and completely reported in [2]. In this proceedings we will concentrate in unpublished results concerning the onset of collectivity on nearly spherical nuclei in the 100Sn region. In nuclei with Z=50 and Z=49 dipole bands have been found indicating the presence of "Magnetic Rotation" [3].

In this contribution, after reviewing the method to determine the order of emission of non-identical particles, we discuss the emission chronology of neutrons and protons from the E/A = 45 MeV Ni-58 + Al-27 reaction and from the E/A = 60 MeV Ar-36 + Al-27 reaction, shown here for the first time.

Revised single particle energies for neutrons are deduced for the N=Z=50 shell closure and evidence for low lying I-pi=2(+) and 3(-) states is presented. Moderate E2 polarization charges of 0.1 e and 0.6 e are found to reproduce the experimental data when core excitation of Sn-100 is properly accounted for in the shell model. For the neutron rich Ni region no conclusive evidence for an N=40 subshell is found, whereas firm evidence for the persistence of the N=50 shell at Ni-78 is inferred from the existence of seniority isomers. The disappearance of this isomerism in the mid nug(9/2) shell is discussed.

  • Core-breakup reactions of the halo nuclei Be-11 and Li-11: momentum distributions and shadow effects
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474. ; 650:1, s. 47-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The halo nuclei Be-11 and Li-11 have been studied in core-breakup reactions where the halo neutrons are expected to be released without a major distortion due to the reaction. The widths of the halo-neutron momentum distributions have been extracted in coincidence with He fragments, Gamma = 32 +/- 4 MeV/c, and Li fragments, Gamma = 42 +/- 4 MeV/c for Be-11 and with He fragments, Gamma =42+/-6 MeV/c for Li-11. The Be-11 breakup gives a very low neutron multiplicity of 0.38+/-0.09 which is a manifestation of the shadowing of the neutron in the core-breakup reaction. This value can be understood from a simple theoretical calculation, which also accounts for the observed transverse momentum widths at small angles. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.

  • Fine structure in the beta-delayed proton decay of Ar-33
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474. ; 611:1, s. 47-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Low-energy beta-delayed protons from Ar-33 have been measured for the first time, The data reveal states, which, despite unfavourable barrier penetrability values, strongly decay to the first excited 2(+) state in S-32. The observation is discussed in terms of the standard shell model, A natural explanation is provided by the large spectroscopic amplitudes, involving s(1/2) and d(3/2) orbitals, as well as the l = 0 barrier penetrability, favouring the decay to the 2(+) state.

  • Wobbling phonon excitations, coexisting with normal deformed structures in Lu-163
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - 0375-9474. ; 703:1-2, s. 3-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wobbling is a rotational mode unique to a triaxial body. The Lu-Hf isotopes with N similar to 94 at high spin provide a possible region of nuclei with pronounced triaxiality. We have investigated Lu-163 through the fusion-evaporation reaction La-139(Si-29,5n)Lu-163 with a beam energy of 152 MeV. Three excited bands decaying into the known, presumably triaxial, superdeformed (TSD) band built on the i(13/2) proton orbital are observed. The electromagnetic properties of the connecting transitions from the two strongest populated excited TSD bands have been investigated. New particle-rotor calculations in which one i(13/2) quasiproton is coupled to the core of triaxial shape produce a variety of bands, whose properties can clearly be interpreted either as "wobbling" or "cranking" motion of the core. Evidence for the assignment of the excited TSD bands as one, and possibly even two wobbling phonon modes built on the yrast TSD band in Lu-163 is given. These triaxial bands coexist with bands built on quasiparticle excitations in the normal deformed (ND) minimum for which new data are also presented.

  • 1976
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 261:1, s. 77-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of deformed shell structure on the potential energies of the doubly even fp shell nuclei are determined by the macroscopic-microscopic method. The calculated potentials are incorporated in the Bohr Hamiltonian for collective quadrupole motion, and the resulting excitation spectra are compared with experimental data.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - 0375-9474. ; 682, s. 399-403
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states of nuclei near the doubly-magic nucleus Sn-100 were studied with the Ni-58+Cr-50 reaction. The experimental setup consisted of the GAMMASPHERE array augmented with light charged-particle and neutron detectors. Excited states were identified for the first time in the proton emitting nucleus Sb-105. Excitations across the N=Z=50 doubly closed shell were observed in Cd-99 and In-101. Some results of large-scale shell-model calculations are discussed.

  • Super-strong beta-decay of Li-11 into Be-11* (18 MeV) state: A probe for halo p-wave component?
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474. ; 616:1-2, s. C201-C207
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An experimental study of beta-delayed charged particles (H, He, Be), neutrons and gamma-rays that follow the Li-11 beta-decay, clearly indicates a beta-feeding to an exited state at 18.1 MeV in Be-11 with a large Gamow-Teller strength, B-GT greater than or equal to 1.0. The large strength of this beta-transition implies a broad overlap of the Be-11* state at 18.1 MeV and the ground state of Li-11. The deduced width of this resonance is similar or equal to 1 MeV. A strong suppression of the branch from 18.1 MeV state into the Be-10+n channel is observed. This branch, with the largest decay energy, has a partial width less than 1% of the total width. A centrifugal barrier consideration fails to explain this effect. A possible consequence of the observed effect for the Li-11 structure is that the admixture of (p(1/2))(2) configuration in Li-11 might be small.

  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - 0375-9474. ; 715, s. 579-582
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Directed and elliptic flow of pi(0) - decay photons in 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions has been studied near midrapidity in an analysis of data obtained with the photon spectrometer LEDA of the WA98 experiment at the CERN SPS. Preliminary results on the rapidity and transverse momentum dependence of the flow have been obtained for various centrality classes for p(T) > 0.2 GeV/c and 2.3 < y < 2.9. The results are compared with the pion flow.

  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474. ; 646:1, s. 67-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Differential cross sections for elastic scattering of photons have been measured for 40Ca at energies of 58 and 74 MeV and for 16O and 4He at 61 MeV, in the angular range from 45° to 150°. Evidence is obtained that there are no significant in-medium modifications of the electromagnetic polarizabilities except for those originating from meson exchange currents.

  • Rotational Bands Near 56Ni
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - 0375-9474. ; 682, s. 28-34
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rotational bands have been found in Co-57 and Ni-57, using Gammasphere in conjunction with the Microball and 30 neutron detectors. The bands in Co-57, extending the mass 60 region of deformation down to Z = 27, are signature partner sequences. The quadrupole moments and dynamic moments of inertia of the new bands in both nuclei are similar to those of rotational sequences in the neighboring nuclei. The high-spin structure of Co-57 is compared with Skyrme Hartree-Fock calculations.

  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - 0375-9474. ; 694, s. 132-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Energy correlations between gamma -ray transitions and the prompt proton decay line in Cu-58 were studied by means of the fusion-evaporation reaction Ca-40(Mg-24,1 alpha 1p1n) using the EUROBALL spectrometer coupled to ancillary detector devices.
