  • Ethnic Conflict and the Right to Return of Limbo Disaporas : Multifaceted Reflections on the Case of BiH
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Migration and Ethnic Studies (Migracijske i Etničke Teme). - Zagreb : Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies. - 1333-2546 .- 1848-9184. ; 20:1, s. 29-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the phenomenon of refugees and resettled persons in the process of forcedmigrations in the aftermath of man-made disasters. Although some of the ideas presented here couldhave wider application, the focus is on post-conflict zones within the former Yugoslavia, namely BiH.The paper uses the questions of ethnicity and nationalism within resettlement, dislocation and immigrationas a backdrop, into which the issue of globalization is also briefly reflected. The intention hereis not to cover a wide range of pressing topics, but simply to relate a number of issues arising in contemporarylarge-scale forced migrations to a resurgence of cultural specificity and ethnicized nationalismas counterpoints to globalization. The paper introduces the concept of “limbo diasporas” in the caseof Bosnian refugees in Sweden through reflection and linkage with the aforementioned concepts. Thepaper ends with some recommendations and open questions on social rehabilitation and ethnic healingas well as some general conclusions.

  • Facing Fear and Responding with Courage: Understanding How Fear Constitutes the “Emotional Citizenship” of Voluntary Returnees to Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Migracijske i Etniĉke Teme. - : Institut Za Migracije I Narodnosti (Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies). - 1333-2546 .- 1848-9184. ; 35:2, s. 171-193
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the case of voluntary return migration to a post-conflict soci-ety, such as Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), where the returnee freely chooses to goback despite having a viable alternative of livelihood and a well-integrated socialpresence abroad. The initial claim of the paper is that the motivation for this type ofreturn is primarily emotional. Although the much researched (Brown, 2014) “patri-otic love” is certainly part of returnees’ emotional landscape, other emotions playan equal, and sometimes a more important role. Arguing that fear is a key emotionconstituting returnees’ daily experience of BiH citizenship, the paper identifiesthree dimensions of fear: ethnic discrimination, economic uncertainty and abuseof political power. Returnees’ continued life and work in the home state representan act of remarkable courage, the success of which does not occur because of thestate structure envisioned by the Dayton Peace Agreement (DPA) that comprisesthe current BiH Constitution, but in spite of the obstacles it creates. The argumentis based on a thematic analysis of 35 in-depth interviews conducted with membersof the Bosnian and Herzegovinian diaspora/transmigrants, who have voluntarilydecided to return and settle in BiH.

  • Between Uncertainty and Integration: Exploring the Influence of Legal Precarity on Refugee Socio-Economic Integration in Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Migracijske i Etniĉke Teme. - Zagreb. - 1333-2546 .- 1848-9184. ; 39:1, s. 31-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The importance of legal status for the integration of refugees and other migrants haslong been recognised by researchers. Previous literature generally indicates that anunfavourable legal status often has adverse consequences on socio-economic integration outcomes. The aim of this article is to compare the socio-economic outcomesof two refugee groups from Bosnia-Herzegovina who came to Sweden during the1990s. The two groups are arguably similar, with the principal difference being theirlegal status upon arrival. To elucidate, one group was able to regulate its legal status after an average of eight months after arrival in Sweden, while the other groupwaited for longer than four years. We analyse the short- and long-term outcomes ofboth adult and child refugees. Our results differ from those obtained in most previous studies conducted in other social contexts. We find that the difference in thelength of the waiting period and the level of exposure to a precarious legal status didnot result in a substantial difference in the degree of long-term socio-economic integration among refugees from these two groups. For most indicators, the differencesare marginal and not significant, especially when looking at the outcomes of childrefugees. Moreover, when differences in outcomes are observed, they tend to favourthe precarious status group (except for the earnings in the year 2000).

  • Quality of life among Turkish immirants in Sweden : a study for assessing the Measurement properties of the World Health Organization's Quality of Life 100 Instrument
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Migracijske i etnicke teme (Journal of Migration and Ethnic Studies). - Zagreb : Inst for Migration and Ethnic Studies. - 1333-2546. ; 27:1, s. 39-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many instruments have been developed to measure the multidimensional construct of quality of life. One of them has been developed by the World Health Organization (WHOQOL-100) and adapted into different languages and cultures around the world. The authors of this study wanted to assess the measurement properties of the Turkish version of WHOQOL-100, to find out the latent factors underlying quality of life, and to determine the direction and magnitude of the interdependent effects among these factors by using structural equation modeling (SEM). The measurement properties of the Turkish version of WHOQOL-100 scale were assessed on 520 voluntary participants who were immigrants in Stockholm/Sweden. SEM gave us one second-order factor QOL and the five correlated first-order factors labelled: physical, social relations, psychological, environment and independence. In the model for total participants, all the factor loadings were high (ranging from 0.60 to 0.92 except for “sexuality” which was 0.47), indicating a strong association between each of the latent factors and their respective items. In the models which were separately constructed regarding birthplace, the authors found a strong association between each of the latent factors and their respective items. The most substantial possible effect on QOL was psychological domain (0.93), which was larger than physical health (0.84), social relations (0.82), level of independence (0.91) and environment (0.73). The effect of psychological domain on the overall quality of life is greater than those of other domains.

  • Integration into Vertical Mosaic : Reflections on the History of Integration Policy, IMER Research and Journalism in Sweden since 1960s
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Migracijske i etnicke teme. - 1333-2546. ; 24:4, s. 371-388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  During the 1960s immigrants were normally called -foreigners- (utlänning) in the Swedish press, and were usually described in a way that would nowadays be considered not only as politically incorrect but also as flagrantly racist and xenophobic. This way of representing immigrants in the Swedish media changed radically at the beginning of 1970s. The word -foreigner- was replaced by -immigrant- in most newspaper articles, and the media started to represent immigrants in a manner that resembles current politically correct media discourse. This paper discusses, first, the reasons for this discursive shift, in the context of the evolution of the Swedish integration and integration policy that was initiated at the end of the 1960s, and, second, the related development of international migration and ethnic relations (IMER) research in Sweden. Finally, the paper presents some reflections on the current state of relations between Swedish integration policy and Swedish IMER research.
